Happy Birthday Lou! U2 are gutsy going out with limited experience. I guess that's one way to learn. You should look into some boating safety courses thru the US Power Squadron or sailing lesson if you plan on hitting the deep blue open waters cause when thing go wrong it can go very fast. & Lou, being color blind could be a big deal out on the water. The buoys are shaped differently. These are the types of thing you could learn in a boating safety classes. I'm offering this as constructive advise and not criticizing you. Good luck and happy sailing

@@designdoctor247 I just don't think there is such a think as Too much information that can be got when entering into potentially life threatening situations. These 2 are admittedly beginners and want to cruise the Caribbean. Every time I watch their blobs I am envious of them but scared for them as well.
@luvslyfe14 жыл бұрын
@@designdoctor247 🤦🏻♀️ 🤦🏻♀️ You do realize theory and experience are two different , things, right? Maybe you don’t. People with long term sailing experience keep telling them to take safety classes, yet they haven’t bothered. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Dana & Lou, have watched them a long time (van days), but the sea is nothing to mess with. My relative’s friend died in a possibly preventable accident at 29 yrs old on open water. He had a medical emergency (was having severe headaches on the water) and wasn’t wearing a life jacket. Who knows why he wasn’t wearing one that day, because he knew to do so. He fell overboard when he had sudden onset of blinding head pain.They have never found his body due to deep undercurrents. Found out after the fact from the coast guard, that that particular area is very dangerous deep under the surface. I am no sailor, but You can’t be too prepared for any kind of emergency on the ocean. Taking classes can’t hurt, and will only help. Like other subscribers, I am happy Dana & Lou are living their dream, but am concerned at the same time that they could be preparing better through courses. No one is invincible when facing Mother Nature’s unpredictability.

As a birthday present for Lou, I have a piece of friendly advice for you. For safety reasons I always prepare the mainsail (halyard, cover etc.) for use as much as possible before I leave the mooring. That way, in case your engine fails you are prepared to switch to sailing fast. Also, it minimizes the time standing on deck while driving the boat thus not blocking the view or being tossed around by the boom. Think you guys are doing a great job in getting to know open water and learning to sail!
@peterbosch85474 жыл бұрын
Agree with getting sails ready before leaving mooring. Furthermore you should hank your halyards then use one loop for frapping and then through the hank leaving a loop to hang onto cleat. Enjoying your adventure and looking forward in seeing you grow in your experience

Well done Wild we roam! Your channel has improved so much since you bought the boat! More B-roll less talking heads, lovely drone shots...lots of water and sail shots! If I remember my sailing days, charts always show the mean low tide water depth,...so perhaps you entered that bay at high tide which would explain the difference. In certain parts of the American East coast, tides can run up to over 40 feet (for example the Bay of Fundy in Canada) Happy 30th! Cheers

Hi Guys a few tips: 3'40" Sheeting in: When you pull the headsail on you need a full wrap on the winch. I can see you've only got a half wrap on. In any more wind the sail will just pull out of your hand while you are trying to hold it and fumble to get extra turns on the winch drum. Put another turn or two on which will make this so much easier. Then as you need to wind the winch handle quickly put one more wrap on the winch drum and wind in the final turns. More turns means more resistance. Also stand further aft behind the winch. It will twist your body so that your shoulders are getting close to right-angles to the centre line of the boat. That means you can see more going on forward and even to windward of you. Thats where all the action is rather than behind you. 4'50" Genoa tack: The halyard is either too loose and needs more tension or the genoa tack is too far aft. The bearing point or load on the tack is therefore up where the sail enters the luff track. There is no strength here. The strength is in the actual tack where the webbing and extra layers of sail cloth are. I can see the wrinkles in the sail which indicates the bearing point is the luff not the tack. To fix this add halyard tension or use a smaller tack shackle or even get your sailmaker to increase the tack cut back. This is quite important. Genoa sheet: I can see on your boat as you furl the genoa in the sheet angle is going up the leech not along the foot where it should. If you sheet up the leech it doesnt pull the sail and make the sail shape flatter it makes the sail deeper and worse trim. To fix it you need to sheet further aft. Meaning the block on the deck should be on a track. The more furled the further aft. Two blocks can be used on the genoa track so you can release the forward one. Talk to a sailmaker or someone experienced to find a solution. 5'20" Tacking: Lou when you released the sheet you took the sheet turns off the winch drum then lifted up and dropped the remainder of the sheet tail over the cockpit combing. This is really bad because it will, pull the tail away from you and either go overboard in the water (which could then get caught under the boat- even in the prop), or get caught up in a bunch at the turning block which will stop the sheet easing out. You need to leave the tail in the cockpit floor. When you release you can even leave one turn on the winch. What happens when you need to tack again quickly? You dont have time to leave the cockpit to go find the sheet tail then re run it through all the blocks & fairleads. Oversteering in the tack: Turn the wheel slower going into the tack. It will only need up to a quarter turn, or at most, half of the wheel to begin the tack. Then as the bow passes through the eye of the wind you should be slowly turning the wheel back to where you had it before the tack. You were almost gybed before you even started to turn the wheel back to the middle. 5'45 to 6'20" Bimini: While you are learning to sail you need to take the bimini down so you can see the sails. I can see you, are leaning out, ducking down, to see around the bimini. You also need to feel the wind on your face as a beginner. Close hauled: Pull pull your sails on harder and you'll be able to sail closer to the wind. By sheeting further aft on the headsail you will be able to pull the sail in harder. Get some tell tails on the genoa and learn how to use them. Only use wool not the very light spinnaker cloth ones. Cut two 1" diameter circles of dacron sticky back and a 7" length of wool. Stick 3/4" of the wool under the sticky back and stick it on the sail about 1'6" back from the luff. If you furl in you may need a second row of tell tales that are a further 1'6" further aft. Good luck

A great way to get better at tacking is to try doing without using the rudder (or minimal use of the rudder) and just using the steering power of the sails. Not every boat will make is without using the rudder but it’s a great and fun way to play with your boat.

Woo Hoo! We have not been to Cuttyhunk yet but we have friends who say it is their favorite place in the area. Are you guys going to try anchoring overnight soon? If you are going south the mooring fields are not all that common along the way, although they are what nearly all the cruisers who stay at places like Vero Beach and Marathon use when there. Be careful of Vero Beach. Everyone calls it Velcro Beach because once you are there you don't want to leave all winter. Anchoring is way better than a mooring, and WAAAAY better than a slip or dock at a marina. Not only is anchoring free, but you oftentimes get an area all to yourselves. It's like the difference between staying at a KOA campground in your van or boondocking in a clearing on fantastic land in the middle of the forest usually all by yourselves, or just other like-minded cruisers to hang out with nearby. Welcome to the wonderful upwind performance of a Rasmus. You can always motorsail. The Rasmus was really designed as a motorsailor, but when you do it always be sure to keep the degree of heel to a minimum. Read the manual for your engine so you know the exact maximum amoint of lean at the engine so the oil pump can keep the insides fed with it without getting destroyed by oil starvation. Diesel engines are expensive to rebuild/replace and running without a steady oil flow is a fast way to do it it.
