Its not hard to live on a boat just go learn to sail first see if this is what you like then buy one, its best if you take some ASA basic sailing. If you dont like it after that then you did not waste money on a boat. If you want to sail everyday come down here to Mexico I sail my 47 Foot Yacht everyday of the week.

For good ventilation: Try to get air moving in one direction and from lower in the space (intake) to higher in the space (exhaust). So your companionway boards could actually work well. put them all in except keep the bottom one out. That will be the air intake. Then go to the bow berth and open the hatch on top. You should start to even feel a breeze sweeping through the cabin. If you have more than the hatch it would be great. If not, you can increase the exhaust capacity with a power vent in the hatch. Imagine trying to suck air out of a glass bottle-it aint happening. But if you drill a hole in the bottom of the bottle you can do it. The bow hatch will try to suck air out of the cabin but the air needs to be replaced, and opening the bottom of the companion way should do it. Any fans in the cabin should be pointed in the direction of the airflow to assist. Also, you can create simple baffles on the deck around the bow hatch to help it draw even more air out of the cabin. I think you could almost instantaneously make the cabin very comfortable even in a very stifling climate.

We have the Caframo fans without any guard at all. They don't hurt too much when you bonk into them, but they do stun a bit. They are much more efficient without the guard, and quieter too. You should look into them. We have three in the V-berth of our Rasmus. One on the front bulkhead, and one at the head of each berth. This works SO well. In the saloon we have one at each settee, fore and aft, and one over the stove which helps.push air through the boat as well as move moisture out away from cooking pans. So three fans in the V-berth and three in the main saloon. There is also one in the head as well. Maybe someday if we actually sleep anyone back in the aft cabin we might add another one back there but there is only one in there right now.. At each fan station there is a little LED light and a 12v power socket with an Ancor USB dual charter. You can't have too many fans, work lights, or USB charging stations. Keeping the bow into the wind on anchor and the hatch open creates a lot of good cross-ventilation. We made companionway slats with screens so we csn have good airflow and still have bug exclusion. You should really make these. They are really easy to make. Right now we are running three fans on low and with everything else we are drawing only 3a of power. That is the fans, anchor lights, phones plugged in and charging, plus the Fusion marine stereo playing your video audio over the speakers via bluetooth.. 3A is actually pretty high for us. Usually it is well under 2A unless the refrigerator is running. That only draws 7A and runs less than 4 hours a day. To stay cool in hot weather being on anchor or at least a mooring ball is always best. The wind blows right through the boat and it keeps everything cool and dry. Moisture is even a bigger enemy than heat.

@@WildWeRoam The screen slats were a fairly easy project to make, and well worth the effort we feel. We bought a sheet of thin plywood, 3/8" or so, and traced each slat and cut it out and then cut out the inner part of it so the plywood was just a 1" outer frame. Then we used window screen frame material with the plastic corners and pop-riveted that right to the wood. We countersunk the pop rivet heads into the wood so they would not stick out. Test the wood and screen frame to be sure they are the right thickness together to slide in the slots before going too far. The original slats do not have square corners but the plastic corner pieces can be fudged a few degrees off of 90 to match the angle of the slat corners and follow the trapezoidal shape all around. The top of the top slat is curved but just make this top piece straight and go from corner to corner and leave a bit more wood there. We cut another bit of plywood to fill in this area above the metal screen frame to make it the same thickness. Then all that needs to be done is to put the screen material in just like any other window screen. The screen roller tool helps a lot at this point. We have found that these slats are much easier to use than other methods of draping a screen over the companionway. Going through the companionway is just like using the regular slats, easier in fact since the screens are much more lightweight than the all wood ones. You can even mix and match the screen and wood slats to suit the conditions. Sometimes we only use one screen, sometimes two. Just the middle one is good for cooler weather when you still need to let moisture out, with the top hatches cracked just a bit We also made screens for the hatches using a similar method. We took the wood frame down and traced a thin plywood frame. When we put the original screws back in we modified the center screw fore and aft to hold a male button snap. Two snaps on each screen holds them securely up. We used a thick foam stick-on window gasket to seal out sneaky bugs, and shimmed the snap so it would reach far enough to engage. Bug screens are so important. We had to add screens inside the deck ventilators too, since mosquitoes and no-seeums could easily fly right in through the crude screens in the stainless deck domes. We paint the screens with a permetherin solution when in really bad bug areas to further repel bugs and tiny no-seeums that can get through screens. Permetherin can be purchased at hiking and camping stores and online. It is used for washing in to clothing to repel insects amd works great for weeks at a time. We re-soak every 30-60 days or when it becomes necessary if it becoming less effective. The foam deck that Hallberg-Rassy uses is very good insulation. In very hot sunny weather with a good breeze it is almost always comfortable down below. Temps are easily 10-15 degrees F lower inside. Placing amd positioning the fams to help the airflow when the wind doesn't blow helps too. Usually, just the fan over the stove aimed towards the companionway works quite well to maintain airflow through the boat on a still day. A washdown pump helps a lot too, when it gets super-duper hot. Spray down the deck with a lot of seawater to cool the boat down a couple times a day. Or just use the bucket on a rope. Insulation only goes so far as you learned woth Odie. So far we have not even made shade tarps which we see other cruisers use. The washdown pump is a good upgrade. In a pinch it could be used to help fight a fire once your fire extinguishers were exhausted. You never know. On that note another good firefighting upgrade is a fiberglass fire blanket. For a stove top grease fire it is perfect. Never EVER spray water on a grease fire. It will spread fire everywhere in the saloon. Have a plan for if you have a grease fire when cooking. The temptation to just use water from the sink is huge in this situation but it would be a huge disaster -especially on a boat! We have a fiberglass fire blanket right there in the galley ready to go. They are under $20 on Amazon. We got a 2-pack for not much more. It hangs on the bulkhead and is small flat package the size of a book. You just pull the bottom flap and throw it over the stove. It could also be used to wrap around you to keep you fairly safe if you had to run through fire at the companionway to get out in emergency. If the engine were on fire and the hatches were blocked (I notice a lot of people store their dinghy tied down over their escape hatch) this could save your life.

Good job with the storage compartment hatches. If you are going to do any serious sailing you need to have some kind of latch to prevent them from bursting open and throwing the contents around. Sticking a cushion or mattress on top is not sufficient. Same for the sole boards. It's no fun in a knockdown when everything goes flying. Think inverted! For the pizza start your own mother. You can take it on your travels will you. I have had mine for 20 years. You can buy dried starters which help develop the mother easily and it's easy to keep going.

Being on the water is going to be a big difference from being inland. The water is always cooler, even in the heat. You should not have to worry about being too hot. At anchorage there is generally always a breeze and manageable in the evenings. Even when it can get up to 45C at midday inside. The key is to have the breeze blow over you when sleeping. Any time there is no breeze such as in a marina or behind something you will have sleepless nights. The thing is to manage the access to a breeze and getting bitten by mozzies. You can go the route of netting but one coil lit later in the evening so it lasts till morning will keep you bite free.

Fantastic progress! Yep - I would child-proof those fans with some chicken wire or something. That would be a terrible surprise during the night when trying to adjust the fan. Also, you probably already know this, but if you pile several basil leaves on top of each other and roll them (kinda like a cigarette) then take the knife to to slice across, it makes easy perfect basil ribbons. Your method obviously works, but just a thought.

I know Emily and Clark's adventure are preparing a video on how to get an Air-conditioning unit that draws very limited power just for the v-bearth and it's DIY and cheap. Maybe you could talk with them, they run their AC on solar and batteries only. I think just having AC for the aft cabin could be perfect for you. Personally I just bought a cheap portable AC and will connect it to my 2000w inverter in our Rasmus 35 I'm about to install. Im hoping that just cooling the room down will be enough and if we are at a harbor with 220 we can run it all night. The AC unit was about 250$ and 5000 BTU which is way too much even though it was the smallest I could find.

Im heading towards first vanlife summer now, also didnt install a rooffan, since I went with absolute overkill on solar. I have 1300WP of solar on my roof. What im noticing so far is that even now already I have more then enough power with just like a few hours in the sun, so im pretty sure in warmer summer I can park my van under trees anyway and just collect some sun every now and then. I also have a window above my reardoors, and two doors on either side of the van. Even with no wind i can pretty easily create a crossbreeze. But ill be working on an alteration I found in a different van, im gonna hijack the cars van system. If I run those of my household batteries I can run them all day, and with the air coming from the front and exiting from the rear I should get a nice flow going

Having had 6 sailboats over 45 years and rebuilding all I learned what BOAT stands for "Bring On Another Thousand" so I'm asking why your using the most expensive marine chandelier known to most sailors. Defenders in New London will beat West Marine, even with the 10% "discount" Amazon if your a Prime member will ship anything free and many times the next day. Amazon can supply almost anything you can put on a boat, or wear. Stainless Steel anything has huge discounts on Amazon and there are many distributors in RI that will save you money. Now in FL but decades in NE I know how much you can spend, so saving money will add cruising days. RNB FL

Hey Dana! I'm sure someone else has asked this question before, but I gotta ask again... is there a place where you have posted the recipe for those yummy looking cookies? Every time you make them it makes me hungry! ☺ Edit: Pizza crust recipe too, please!! 😍
