We Searched For A Secret Japanese Hot Spring

We searched for a secret Japanese hot spring in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. If exploring Japan, we highly recommend visiting a Japanese onsen since it’s a huge part of Japanese culture in addition to onsen in Japan being super relaxing and enjoyable. We are huge fans of secret or wild hot springs in Japan since they are usually located in nature and have beautiful views. The best thing about wild Japanese onsen is that they are also usually free!
In this van life Japan, video we leave Toyama prefecture and head to Niigata, Japan, an undiscovered Japanese prefecture known for its excellent rice and Japanese sake. Niigata ken is also well known for its many beautiful onsen towns scattered throughout the prefecture. We share some information about what to do in Niigata as we continue our camper van in Japan road trip in this new prefecture.
Travelling Japan by van and being full time van lifers in Japan, is an incredible way to overland Japan and get off the beaten path. We have managed to visit so many amazing places during the 15 months of our slow travel camper van trip in Japan. Converting a DIY camper van in Japan has been one of the best decisions we have ever made and car camping in Japan is so easy due to the huge amount of Japanese roadside stations, free campsites and onsen throughout the country. We can’t recommend van life in Japan enough!
