We sent Richard Hammond to drive a Porsche GT3 R on one of Europe’s scariest tracks - Pt 1

When Falken Tyres asked if we could give them a hand with testing tyres for their 911 GT3 R race car, we jumped at the chance and planned to send our most experienced track driver. Instead, Richard Hammond went along to see what goes in to making the stickiest of rubber for one the world’s toughest races - the Nurburgring 24 hours.

I actually had a Sim Racing GT3 race in this track last Sunday and it is properly scary (using VR). It took me over an hour just to get the layout and driving line in a decent spot (as in not crashing and not doing an over 1:50:000 lap). I can't imagine what it is like driving at speed in this track in real life. Genually half the corners are blind and you have no idea what is ahead of you. Good track for Richard Hammond.

1:50 around the Nürburgring GP track? Which game was that, that is unrealistically fast. In Assetto Corsa only a very small portion of people even goes sub 1:55, and that's fairly close to real life times. Last season of the Blancpain series the top qualifying times there were in the 1:54s. Anyways, the real scary part in the 24h race is the Nordschleife not the GP track, you'll need much more than an hour to get the lines right on there...

ikr... I think it's one of the friendliest track for motorsport journalist as it seems they're always there (incl. motorcycles). Must be: nice weather most of the time, affordable to rent for the day and: least imposing rules regarding filming rights and safety protocols.
