Tsukuyo legit one of the most badass female character. She just looks fucking cool, great backstory, goated voice, cool as fu*k character design. I remember on my first Gintama watchthrough I was shipping her with Gin so much ahaha.

In Yoshiwara (and most Red Light/Pleasure Districts) women were seen as "products" first and foremost. And if they scarred their face the way Tsukuyo did as a child, they didn't sell; they're neither a product nor a woman anymore when they lose "that pretty face" (which is some serious misogynistic-gaslighting) . And while part of it was so she couldn't be forced into the prostitution biz, it was also to prove to Jiraia that she was serious about becoming his disciple. She wanted to be as strong as him to protect Hinowa and the other women forced to live in Yoshiwara.
