We Stopped on Top of A School of Salmon (King & Coho)

Its been way to long since I have targeted my favorite fish the king salmon. Since 2023 it has been closed in California. I was lucky enough to get invited by my friend Aaron to join him on his Willie Boat in Oregon. I had been looking forwards to heading north and fishing the Columbia River for months. The day could not of gone better!

I love salmon fishing too, but if I had access to Albacore or Bluefin or Yellowfin Tuna, I’d drop salmon like a bad habit Chris!

salmon is from april thru october. Takes way less resources and your fishing coastal vs off shore. Tuna is better dont get me wrong, just a lot more goes into it. Thanks for watching

Chris what rods and reels were you using? Are those the new Gary Loomis Edge Rods and Daiwa line counter reels? Good job on the salmon. I’ve gotta go to Oregon!

@@tamalpias4 Edge 1066 rods, the 2 front rods are Talon rods. I actually broke a couple Edge rods earlier in the month so I had to buy replacements and Edge was out. And yes, Daiwa Lexa 300s

@@aaronpoloniedge rods have a lifetime warranty, but I guess their rods are just to brittle? That 70 ton press really squeezed all that resin out of the blanks.

@@aaronpoloni I hear you on that, I own over 15 edge rods including all their tuna rods. They do take a long time to get delivered. Only fast way to get anything is to attend a show they are at and seeing a rod you like and buying it on the spot.

I went out alone on August 17 and I caught a Chinook known as a “white king.” Approximately 20% of Chinook lack the metabolism to digest carotenoids (naturally occurring pigments in their crustacean forage, such as krill and shrimp). Their flesh lacks any hint of orange color when you cut into them. But they are highly prized for what many consider to be a superior flavor and a higher Omega-3 fat content. These fish are sometimes referred to as “ivory king.” They are more prevalent in southeast Alaska, but we get them down here out of Newport. As I said, I was alone and I had to fight the fish 18 minutes and 34 seconds (as timed in the video) and it wound up weighing 23 1/2 pounds. This fish is not the same thing as a Tule King. That fish is the inspiration of the town located on the Washington side of the Columbia, directly across from Hood River. The town is actually named, “White Salmon.“ (The more you know…)

I leave the clickers on because it allows me to hear what’s going on. When running the boat in crowded conditions like this, I have to have my head on a swivel watching other boats etc. The clickers allow me to hear when a rod is getting bit, when people are making adjustments to depth, etc.
