A clarification, Yuji Naka created the initial design documents but wasn't involved in development after that. This game was made using the same design philosophy as Mighty No. 9. Where one team conceptualizes the game and another completely different team makes it. So Yuji Naka can be held accountable for coming up with a lot of the terrible design decisions such as one button design but he can't be blamed for the team deciding to stick with that design when play testing made it clear that they needed more than one button.

The one button thing worked for 2D Sonic. Sonic 1, 2, 3&K, Generations and Mania proved it over and over, but this is a 3D game, nd 3D games are more complex. Hell, the dude could have looked at Generations and realize it instantly. It features both 2D and 3D gameplay styles.

Yeah... I recounted this game year ago and this is one of the worst pieces of shit that I ever played. Not only for gameplay perspective, but also how cynical, shameless and self confident assholes team behind this thing turned out to be. They literally cut out plot and story for the book. Yes! There was a book based on this disaster and it explain nearly all lore and plot of the game!

Honestly, this games failure makes me a little sad. It was clearly a passion project for the guy that was HORRIBLY executed. But it lead him to retire which is a sad way to go out with everyone (understandably and myself included) shitting on it. But with that said, charging $60 for this is a crime against humanity. He should have just made another Nights game....even as niche as that is. It would have been better than this atrocity.

I will give it two things: 1. Even though the mascot thing is clearly a knockoff of Cappy in Mario's wedding tux, I rather like his design, and 2. The opening cutscene, despite being complete fuckin' gibberish, is very pretty. Kinda like Pink Elephants from Dumbo. ... And then the actual game starts and it turns into literally any Wii-era shovelware knockoff of Mario Galaxy, but with Cappy and Chaos.

Honestly speaking, the art style and overall design looks pretty good. If you added some actually interesting lore, and then made this an anime instead of a game, it would have turned out good. Like, damn, that introduction was nearly 10/10 in terms of visuals, albeit a little much considering how much happened after the first 15 secs. What made him think this was going to be a good game, instead of an 8-9/10 kids anime.

What I was pointing to, was the children designs, the clean animation transitions from one child to the next, the idea of children being on parallel worlds, almost like mirror versions of each other, a main anchor character lying in the hat guy, and the predictable pet/companion that accompanies the children throughout this make believe world. My point is, if you twisted the story, made it deeper, kept those key components, and made it into an anime, you could easily get a well made anime for children to teens. But the guy clearly kept adding things over and over, likely lost his initial vision for the project, and it ended up coming out barely on it's last legs. No wonder it turned out bad.
