As a man who has experienced the horrors of being hit with an axe and sustaining a critical injury from it I can say that the axe is a terrifying and brutal horror trope weapon and efficient both for murder and combat.

Not disagreeing entirely, but if the axe wielder is swinging with such windup as shown here I think a fellow would have a good chance of being able to run in close during the windup and get in a couple throat punches or a pocketknife stab while making the axe relatively useless

Don't ask me how I know this, but I can certainly say that the hook isn't likely to be taken seriously until you get someone with it and suddenly they understand what it's like to be a caught fish. The knife just immediately turns on a person's fight or flight mode, while the axe and machete send a very clear message that all possible pretense has been dropped and that you're taking your life in your hands by not getting the fuck outta there on the double.

As someone with a cat that naturally has 18 sharp hooks, I can confirm this. Though I will point out that the setting matters too. Take a look at The Shining, being trapped in an isolated location (especially in a supernatural setting like the hotel) with someone targeting you with an ax, and with no means to receive any aid is a terrifying prospect. There's a reason the "Here's Johnny!" scene is as iconic as it is.

One factor not really into account here was concealability. Now, most "traditional" horror killers aren't particularly subtle, but in terms of psycho-serial killer motive, where the goal is maximum deaths over time, a knife or hook is easier to get into places it shouldn't be. The surprise factor of just whipping out a kitchen knife or a hook and just disemboweling someone is chilling, to say the least. Who hasn't heard of stories of so-and-so who got stabbed 20 times in the chest in the span of a minute, and bled to death gruesomely. Absolutely awful.

Depends on the context. It a lot of "traditional" slasher horror films, the isolated setting *is* part of the horror. The Shining is an excellent example here. Having no one and no where to run to. So depending on the story, being inconspicuous serves no purpose and being overtly monstrous becomes more effective.

I think you missed one important test - against the environment (for example doors). In many horror movies the protagonists/victims try to get away and lock doors , inside a car or the like. So something like the axe adds a "can't get away' factor.
@LashknifeTalon
@LashknifeTalon 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, this; and if you're a hero, you might need to escape the zombie horde or whatever, and you can use the axe to do it. Along with all the factors brought up in the video, I think the axe is the clear winner in both a "used by a hero against zombies/monsters" and a "used by a slasher to hunt teenagers" context.
@NotaHandlePushOnly
@NotaHandlePushOnly 7 ай бұрын
Yup! That and try swinging an axe or a machete with wide swings indoors or a thick forest, you're probably going to hook on everything. Environment would totally be a factor. Machete might actually be even better in a forest chase scene as it could be used to clear debris in their paths, but a hindrance in say, a densely packed pine tree area near walls and fences in a park.

@TheScarvig

there is a reason its called a butchers hook.... its usually used to move/hang carcasses in a butchery. nowadays it might be less present in the minds of younger people that have never seen meet anywhere except in a supermarket freezer, but the image of hanging on that hook squealing in pain like a pig as you struggle to get away and the thought of hanging on such a hook, alive but unable to free yourself waiting to be butchered like an animal have something horrifying that a quick death from a blade just do not bring to the table

Something ive always wondered if it would make an effective weapon or not is a gauntlet with 'claws' on each finger. Or heck even just 'pointy' tips on an armoured gauntlet. Would it cause any damage or not? If anything it would look intimidating but im wondering if its practical.

@@demoulius1529 I have wondered the same thing too. I always wanted a gauntlet with raptorial claws on the digits that resembled a bird of prey's "talons", even though it's for the hand. In battle, I think it would add little to the sword or other elongated weapon one is wielding, but if one was otherwise unarmed, it would be a great thing to have.

Something to consider here is that in many slasher films the killers have a tendency to improvise. Michael Meyers in Halloween II often improvised with other items as weapons. He was in a hospital and he dispatched people with a syringe, scalpel, cord for strangling, a hot tub, a blood transfusion needle and tube, and a kitchen knife stolen from an old woman's kitchen. Jason wasn't restricted to machetes (his signature weapon), he could use a spear improvised from a gate, garden tools, and spear guns to name a few.

I think the 3 main categories that should be judged are Lethality (can this weapon quickly dispatch a victim right before he/she escapes), Fear Factor (how gory/pain-inducing this weapon can be when used to maim trapped or fleeing victims), and Practicality (how manageable is it to wield or stow this weapon while chasing down a victim or sneaking through a building/forest to catch the victim unawares)

Skallagrim made a similar video a while back. Two of them in a row actually. The way you are using the hook makes a big difference. Skall points out that if you use a hook with a horizontal grip like usual, you run into the issue of the hook digging in between your fingers, limiting how much power can be put into your strikes. Here's the thing.... they are all terrifying me to the bits, but the machete seems like the least scary to me simply because, unless the killer is trying to torture me, its the most merciful weapon, it'd simply chop my head off and thats it, while the other ones will: shatter my bones (axe), gore me and likely leave nasty wounds (hook) or make me bleed to death (knife), all of which are horrifying to the bits :'>
@Embetebe
@Embetebe 7 ай бұрын
In horror movies the whole point of the weapon is to cause psychological horror rather than specifically the how damaging the weapon is. Hench, probably the most horrifying is actually the hook.... The fact it can tear into the flesh and cause a wound that will cause the person to bleed out would be the more terrorising, especially if grabbed from behind and dragged..

I'd like you to revisit the axe as a weapon by using the blunt side of it. In the spirit of Halloween, one of the scariest serial murders that took place in america was done by an axe wielder, but he used the blunt side. The man said that he did this because otherwise the axe would be more likely to get stuck in what he was swinging at. So I think in terms of deadly/horror, I'd go axe if you included this. Otherwise, machete is likely the most versatile and deadliest.

Something you haven't considered is precision. I mean, most of the tests would be for a film like friday the 13th, where the killer usually kills a victim near instantly. But other horror movie villains profit somehow from the fear, and I guess a weapon like a knife or the hook, which doesn't (have to) kill instantly would be better for those.

It is used in the Commercial Fishing Industry and by everyday Anglers, and also has a variant that was made specifically for this Industry. A large hook is attached to a long stick or pole. If you can have 2 at once Hook + Machete or Knife is probably the worst. Replace Machete with Axe when dual wielding if the slasher villain is strong enough to not be slowed by one-handing the Axe too much. Also, press 5 and thank me later.

not really addressed, but the hook has a very scary aspect: digging into an artery. a torn artery in a chase means you're dead, and you get enough time to let it sink in.

Yeah it depends on what you're after, as a slasher. Efficient killing in one hit? Machete. Are multiple quick hits okay? Knife. Close quarters, from stealth? Also knife. Are you after prolonged pain, or shock factor? Hook. Are your opponents defending themselves, including armor or just closing doors on you? Axe. There's so much overlapping there too, like if you go for the throat a knife is also entirely capable of one-shotting someone.

There is one more weapon to consider as well and plays a BIG part. The Killer themselves. Another interesting one is where the Killer doesn't use any specific weapon at all. A Killer who not only improvises, but is seasoned is the deadliest, only because they are able to make thought out decisions and have that built up through trial and error the more effective and efficient ways and use of implements to make their kills. Those would be the ones to watch out for, as their flexibility and confidence in not just their skill, but their confidence they can use anything to make a kill with high proficiency.

As scary as being dragged to your death on a hook is, an axe is a tool. It can bring down doors, walls, padlocks and even most chains that keep gates closed. Most the time, you trying to find sanctuary is just you finding an enclosed space to die in

about the Hook i wanted to add those that you mentioned at the start with the handel are mostly used by farmers to stack small sized hay or straw bales on a flatbed trailer behind a tractor, i spent many a summer working with them and can say they are taxing on the wrists and in 80% of the cases they arent sharp.

Speaking from experience, a knife is the scariest thing to come across, especially held to your back. I’ve never felt pins and needles through my whole body like that. You’d see and be able to run away from someone with a larger weapon, but the knife will be on you before you even realize someone’s getting too close. Fortunately for me, it was a skinny, drug-addled man trying to stick me up with a little knife in Boston Common. I was able to walk away from that with just a scratch. Boston isn’t dangerous, I just got particularly unlucky on that occasion.

The axe has that wind up, which gives the victim time for one last scream and the camera to pan to their view before it comes down (but more easily dodged or blocked by the heroic protagonist). Knife is deadliest, and can come out the quickest. The hook is more exotic, but otherwise somewhat similar to the knife (with greater limits on how it cane be used though). Machete seems like middle of the road option between axe and knife.

The important thing about *any* improvised weapon, is if you can use it effectively, without needing to modify it. Baseball bats (and their kin), axes, machetes, and other such things that you can just grab, and swing in either a smashing or chopping motion, tend to be really good. Thrusting, in a stabbing motion, might cause an issue or two. On the plus side, plenty are already battle-tested, and proven.

I think the axe is the scariest because it’s more powerful per hit and it can act like a hook if it has a bit of a beard. But you know what’s scary? SCISSORS. Especially if its good like barbers scissors or fabric shears, and then there’s the fact that if take off the pivot screw then you have two knives!

Here's the thing about any of those...if I'm in a house and some slasher psycho comes after me my happy butt is grabbing a chair or even a metal pot lid to use as an improvised shield. Of course my natural reaction to "fight or flight" is pretty much wholly fight like a cornered animal so I'm not good for that kind of scenario.

It depends. If you're inside houses like Scream or Halloween then the knife is your best bet. If you're outside like it Friday the 13th, you'd want the axe. In this way, i could accept an argument for the machete being the best but my preference goes to the axe

In horror pop media, the victims are usually unarmed, or there's a super rare improvised weapon, while the killer often has super strength and survivability. I'd say the axe is the best.

In my opinion the Axe is the scariest because if a Psycho-Slasher is chasing you around the camp/college/Suburban neighborhood with an axe they can use that axe to destroy almost any shelter you try and hide in and even when dull it will still break bone.
