I believe that the water bottle spills are a complex visual metaphor for Will being in an uncomfortable situation and not reacting in a way desired by others. In order to demonstrate this assertion, the water bottle spills in the following situations: 1. When asked to elaborate on why he was so lonely as a child, Will states “You don’t know how hard it is being in the fucking limelight right here right now” (Will 1:17). 2. After Will has trouble explaining conspiracy theories to Sammie and Caroline. 3. When Mabel unexpectedly comes on the show, Will states “I am not prepared” just before the incident (Will 5:24). 4. After Jonas ridicules him for not applying what he learned in rizztory class. Water bottles have straightforward, singular purposes. They are designed to hold water for drinking, and one would not expect them to do anything else. In all these situations, Will responds in in ways that his peers do not expect, like a water bottle suddenly spilling. It’s admirable that Best Friends Today layers the lore with reoccurring metaphors that add depth to the overarching story and the themes of the series.
