We Took Poor Niko To The Vet Too!! She Has An Infected Elbow Sore

Hey! So they say bad luck comes in 3s! We're wrapping Milo up in a bubblewrap swaddle and putting him in the baby carrier attached to us 24/7 haha. We get a few comments about both Phil and Niko and the red patches on the fur on their legs. This is hard skin from where they lie down and typically lower themselves down on one side. Having been concerned in the past ourselves we did our research and its common and normal for this patch of hard skin to occur just like ours on knees and elbows. On Niko however it has been repeatedly worn too much on hard surfaces and has split, become irritated and now infected. Niko is allowed to sleep on the carpet, heck even get on the couch if she wanted to but both of the dogs favour the cold hard floors. We've put down the cooling mats that were sent to inside as we were using these outside, these have a little give to them being a gel mat so that will be better for Niko. Both dogs have had numerous dog beds time and time again but they just don't like using them! For now, we will treat the infection with the medication provided and then try and keep on top of it with suitable moisturisers etc and further encourage a dog bed for Niko at least. The vet said once it happens its a regular reccurence so we'll try keep ahead of it! Niko is fine in herself we just caught her licking it thats how we initially found out. Phil has the same but relatively small in comparison a more normal looking size.
Niko doesn't like the vets as you can see unlike her brother who strangely loves them!

I really struggle 3 times a day giving Snowy my cat thyroid meds and Benadryl. I give her lots of kisses after then she forgives me.🌻💕🙏🏻 We love our fur babies! Here’s wishes for Nikos speedy healing! Those cooling mats are great!

I had a cat on thyroid meds and I would find regurgitated pills everywhere in the end he wouldn’t take them at all 😩 he has been in kitty heaven for 10 years still lived to the grand age of 18 ❤️

Use Hamburgermeat or soft Sausage and put it inside, feed her 1-2 peaces without first then the third with and then some more without. That's much better.

Poor sweet Niko! I hope her elbow heals soon and perfectly ♥️ This isn't an uncommon problem for some large dogs, and there's a dog bed pad that keeps them cool, I can't remember what it's called but maybe someone else here knows? It's a chew-proof pad, you put on top of a soft bed, and it keeps the dog cool. Edit: Lol my dogs do the same thing when they had to take a pill! 😄 Edit 2 -- Yay! Someone told you about the cooling pad! Last edit lol -- Another trick is to put a small soft rug under the cooling pad, for a little extra padding. Or to put the cooling pad on carpet. The more pressure you can keep off her elbows when she's sleeping, the better.

Put the pill in a hot dog sausage. That's how I used to get my dog to take her medicine. She will swallow it without thinking.

I’ve bought a lick mat from amazon and put a wee bit of chicken paste on it sprinkle tablet on top and my dog licks it all off and it also makes him calm too

We used to use either baby socks or an adult's sweat wrist band on our dog. The wrist bands are slightly bigger, thicker and stretchier... & wodge that cream in there!! A good thick covering on a CLEAN wound will help prevent infection. 😘

Your poor fur kids. ☹️ you might like to consider a salt water flush for Niko’s wound along with any Vet treatment. Salt water is good for skin infections. It helps clean and kill any surface infections, and antibiotics help kill deeper infections.

Those elbow sores are both scary and frustrating. One of my Mals constantly laid on the patio and periodically developed infections (one of which was very bad) in those elbow sores. The cooling pads look great, and I hope they help Niko give that sore a chance to heal. She is such a sweet girl, very dedicated to all of her family.

In the US, we have these things called Pill Pockets. They are a strong smelling, almost like jerky, hollow treat. Dogs love them. I had a dog once that managed to eat the treat and spit out the pill every once in a while. Best of luck to you and hugs and well wishes to Nico. 🤗
