He already knew how the song was supposed to sound (notice him and the girl were correcting Eddy on how it was supposed to go) and he has a strong understanding of solfege and Eddy was using that with him (not fair imo since that wasn't Chinese) so he could figure out the finger placement faster.

I bet he plays another stringed instrument. Some of the skills are definitely transferable. I play guitar as my primary instrument, but I took violin lessons for a few weeks when I was at school. In my first lesson, my teacher said I was already better than a lot of students he had been working with for ages, haha. Felt like a prodigy... until I tried drum lessons and I was completely and utterly hopeless, lol.

I’ve been re-watching this several times (bc it’s super funny) and I have to say as an applied linguist and Mandarin teacher, Brett’s Mandarin, especially the usage of result compliments (e.g. when he said your bow is ‘crooked’ in Mandarin 歪「掉」)and temporal markers (also when he talked about the crooked bow 歪掉「了」) are on-point, accurate and natural. Most students of mine would probably just settle with ‘your bow is very crooked 你的弓很歪 or your bow has crooked 你的弓歪了, but instead here he used both the result compliment 掉 and the temporal marker 了 to imply the change of the bow’s position, with the connotation that she didn’t do it purposely: 你的弓歪掉了」 Those two are 2 of the hard points for non-native speakers, especially English as L1 speakers, to learn, and I’ve seen near-native students still struggling with them (let alone the combo!). Maybe it came from their childhood back in Taiwan or their family exposure to Mandarin, but I think Brett’s Mandarin command might be better than he’s giving himself credit to. Anyways, good job Twoset for teaching beginners in your L2, you’re doing amazing sweeties! *insert Kardashian gif here*

@@wongshawn6040 I think that what the OP means is that it's not their first language, and I kind of agree with that. Yes, they were born and spent their first years of life in Taiwan (3 for Eddy, 5 for Brett), yes Mandarin is their families' mother tongue. But they themselves grew up and went to school in New Zealand and Australia. Even if they speak Chinese quite well, they're definitely much more fluent in English.

In linguistics first language/ L1 means your main language and not the earliest language you learned as a baby, and L2 means any language that's not your main language. L1, L2 has nothing to doo with the speaker's learning sequence, just their command on the language. So yeah, Miss Coussin Rouge explained what I meant clearer than myself, thank you.

Very sorry to be that guy, but in this case you have to say "their" instead of "they're" because "their" is the possessive pronoun in 3rd person plural while "they're" is just short for they are. In this case you're referring to Brett and Eddy's accents so you have to use "their". Hope you don't find me too annoying lul.

I can somehow feel what he meant when he said, it's just the techniques. When I learnt the violin, I was a teen and had played the piano before. As soon as I knew how to produce a decent tone out the violin and became comfortable with the mechanics, finding the notes were pretty intuitive. When the teacher told me she might want me to play Ode to Joy because it was christmas, I just started playing. I don't have perfect pitch, but when the notes are close to each other or repeated, it was easy for me to just play on the piano. Same thing for the violin. The way Zach tried to find the correct pitch of the notes was very relatable lmao

Plot twist: Zach is actually part of the viola gang. 😁 Lol, kidding aside I think Eddy showing him how to play it properly first (bow holding and hand position as well) was a big help especially since he is I think classically trained as a singer (maybe idk) so he was right in saying that he just learned the mechanics of the instrument. Maybe he is a visual learner too so he got it by watching, and Eddy associated the strings with the notes and shows him the fingers to play using his forearm as the neck so that's a plus. Other team was good as well, given the language barrier. She (sorry I can't remember the spelling of her name and typing this comment on mobile so I can't look) was also asking the right questions like how to hold the bow and whatnot.
