@@0Zolrender0 how is it not? A more advanced species has monitored us for centuries should have absolutely known how to make contact to us. Every step of the way the aliens thought humans were monsters not worth talking to. They put shields up where the first probe got destroyed and yet made no attempt to contact. Their choice? Try to destroy humans. Now after they get decimated they realize they can't communicate with humans? Seriously bad time to figure that out don't you think? 99% of the fault goes to the contradictory aggressor pacifists. Maybe if they didn't lose their way, the outcome would be different. Humans had no idea the aliens were trying to surrender and why would they? All experience with the aliens showed them to be the aggressors.

No "human retaliation is righ" here IMO. We "Attack" other spécies on our home planet all thé fucking time for "scientific" (and other very bad) reasons. WHAT IF THEY DECIDED TO "RETALIATE" without further notice. Would it make it normal to be "attacked" by them in retaliation, just because all thé fucking time we couldn't properly communicate With them? Thé exact same situation in my opinion. Communication difficuties shouldn't lead to immédiate "retaliation". You wouldn't want our dogs and cats at home suddenly shooting at us for no fucking reeason than "bad communication" would you?

Humans: We had a war among ourselves, parts of it were about ideology, but ultimately it came down to energy. A nation called America put an oil embargo on a nation called Japan. What Japan couldn't buy, they took by force! The Americans worked long and hard to unleash nuclear power... Klingon: Ah, so there would be abundant energy for all! Human: No, so Japan could be blown up even more effectively. Klingon: So, er, actually, can we have a peace treaty with you? We suddenly aren't feeling the whole warrior culture thing.

An Arthur C Clarke story is like this: an alien ethnologist watching sadly as a race limited to one world begins to explore space, then kills itself, except for a few ships trying desperately to escape to the nearer stars. Impressed by their ingenuity and strength of character, the aliens make contact and aid them to the nearest uninhabited but liveable worlds for the survivors. It ends like this: 'With that much drive to live, we might be making a mistake.' they joked. Twenty years later, it didn't seem like a joke anymore.

This sounds like his first published work "Rescue Party", in which the aliens attempt to rescue people from a planet about to be destroyed when its Sun goes nova, and discover that the inhabitants have escaped by STL starship. "I feel a little afraid of these people. After all, we only outnumber them about a thousand million to one."

Them disarming themselves is totally stupid considering they’re in space which is literally the great unknown where it could be empty in that star system but there could also be a very strong militant species or even AI gone rogue and they don’t have to follow your rules, you’d think a space faring species of all species would recognize how irresponsible it is to disarm themselves.

This reminds me of another Science Fiction story I read in Analog. The peaceful beings of the galaxy had encountered the humans as they moved out into space. They initially welcomed this new species, and began to introduce them to aspects of their cultures and races. But they became alarmed as they learned of the humans war like nature. Even worse was when they were showing technology to the humans. They shows the humans an experimental farming machine that had turned out to be a failure. And the humans looked it over, asked if they could have it, took it home, and they changed it into one of the most efficient ground based killing machines the races had seen. Alarmed over this they gathered their forces before the humans could get stronger, just managed to beat them back into Sol, and placed a force shield around their planet with the control based on the moon to contain them. Now it was 200 years later, and the races had encountered and even worse threat on the edges of the galaxy, some race that was expanding and killing and consuming everything they encountered. Desperate for any help, they sent a delegation to the Earth. The crew of that ship got to the planet and went through the shield (not realizing an enemy ship has followed them). They landed on the world which seemed almost agrarian and found a house with family in it at started talking to him. And he said he could speak for the people of the planet and that confused them but the continued. Even as they discussed their problem with a worse threat, the other ship landed elsewhere on the planet and the crew exited. They found a young child and picked him up looking him over considering how to consume him. The child pointed to the ship and said bad men .. and the ship and aliens all dissolved into nothingness. In the meantime back at the other location, the person they were talking to looked back up as if having been distracted, and said the humans would be willing to provide what aid they could. If they would simply go back into space and destroy the force shield, they would accompany them back to command. Again this confused them as the humans had no ships but they did as asked. And the moment the shield was down every single creature on the planet (humans, animals, everything) looked up with one thought .. freedom at last! Even as the aliens on the ship are discussing what use the humans could be, a glowing point starts appearing in the Atlantic Ocean and it grows and grows as something extend out from the planet. And then the WHOLE PLANET starts to move. Stunned one of the aliens mention that it looks like the moon is also moving with the planet and staying in orbit exactly as it should. Another alien dumbfounded makes a comment about well I guess you get used to a moon like that and want to keep it around. And the alien ambassador can only think dear maker, what have we unleashed on the universe. Those poor (alien name I can't remember) will never know what happened.

There is certainly other life that has reached technological levels sufficient to get into space. The big question is can they survive their technology growth long enough to develop mental and social progress sufficient to prevent them from destroying themselves due to residual instinctive tendencies that made them aggressive enough to dominate their planets? If they reach technology sufficient to cross vast expanses of space to reach other systems, by definition, they did expand mentally and socially sufficiently to survive their technology advances. Any such advanced species will also recognize and likely appreciate the vastness of our universe and the rareness of any other species advancing within the same time frame they themselves exist. This is likely to instill a deep appreciation for discovering such new evolving species. They will also though be aware of the danger of species that have not reached this level of development, meaning they will not want to interact with us until we have reached that same level of development maturity. It is unlikely they believe they can help us reach that development and thus will likely simply observe us, hoping we do achieve this. They may step in to keep us from destroying ourselves to give us additional opportunities to continue to develop toward that goal. For us to get there, we need to recognize our power addiction is holding us back. Nature tends toward brief states of balance in a universe in constant motion (meaning change). We must learn to live with each other and with the rest of our natural systems instead of trying to dominate them. I am not saying technology has no place, it certainly does, or we would never expand into space. But we must learn to do so with balance, not dominance. Until then, we will be unlikely to meet alien life.

Ok, this one's a little... well, suspension of disbelief stretching. Even a hyper-aggressive humanity would look at the fact that aliens set up a force field around the Sol system and the fact that said aliens have no idea how to actually fight, and realize that the aliens were acting in fear, not malice. We're not stupid.
