We Tried To Workout Like An Olympic Figure Skater

Maia Shibutani is a 2018 Olympic bronze medalist in figure skating. The American Olympian's workouts are designed specifically for figure staking. We tried two workouts:
The first, the Gyrotonic training method, takes from multiple types of workouts, and helps develop skaters' center of gravity.
Second, we worked out on a slide board to work thigh muscles for maintaining stability.

Helen Luu figure skating more with jump, spin, dramatic lift while ice dancing is like ballroom dance on ice with all musicality and music interpretation so there's no jump nor lift the partner above head etc.

She is an ice dancer so she does not jump or do high level spins if any at all so she probably has an even amount of legs and arms I am a figure skater so I work on the muscles for jump and the flexibility and balence for spins but in general my leg get more of a work out than my arms.

Julia Just because she is an ice dancer doesn’t mean she doesn’t spin. She may not jump but spins are actually a required element in programs for ice dancers, as I am an ice dancer myself. Just wanted to clarify :)

well technically i'm an ice dancer and you do need training similar to jumping since some movement based lifts such as stationary lifts sometimes needs a takeoff as well. now, the isu has changed the ice dance elements and they have included the need for "choreographic jumps" embedded in the lifts so we do jump- just not like freestyle skaters.

The one mistake every single outlet out there seems to make - Maia and Alex are ice dancers, not pairs skaters, which is completely different from ice dance, imho. But. I’m sharing this comment because I don’t think people are being clear enough about the whole ice dancing thing. Ice dance routines DO INCLUDE spins and lifts. Also I’ve seen some comments implying that a lot of these workouts aren’t good for regular figure skaters and that ice dancing isn’t as hard because it doesn’t include jumps but these are also completely untrue. The balance workouts are great for skaters of all types and ice dancing is just as hard as any other form of skating, it requires so much trust and coordination. And spins and lifts take a lot effort to get wright. Idk I just feel like people aren’t giving Alex and Maya enough credit just because they’re ice dancers. Maybe I’m just over analyzing but it’s just my opinion 🤷‍♀️
