Hey, hydrogen peroxide expert here, y'all were so close with snotty! Take what you learned with the toluene substitute, swap the alcohol for that in a similar way to cleaning with alcohol and then move on to the resin before the toluene fully evaporates and I think you'll really be there! Also, I think the sanding helped not only because it's thinner but because the surface finish makes a big difference both in the chemical interaction and the light refraction (being able to see through it)

If I recall, the experiments were performed using wood that was cut across the grain. Thus allowing the chemicals to enter the straw-like tubes of the open end grain. This also explains why the wood in the other videos were so fragile, especially after the multiple chemical washings breaking down the cellular structure.

33:22 part of me wonders if the lack of "full opacity" is actually due to the roughness of the surface of the wood. like headlights that have gone hazy, it's not that the plastic isn't clear anymore it's just surface scratches. So if you've got some really fine sandpaper lying around maybe give it a scrub with that and see if it gets smoother, and see if the opacity improves even further.

Evan and Katelyn are such passionate and efficient people, I wish there was a way they could achieve these videos with even more efficiency (and less stress) to get as many videos as possible; I know they're busy all the time with streaming, podcasts, searching for a house now etc so I'm glad they still have so much passion and dedications for all their projects, even ones like this where the end result is basically a piece of paper turned into a coaster.

im pretty sure that the reason your wood wasnt perfectly clear is that fact that it was cut WITH the grain instead of AGAINST the grain. It would help the chemicals and resin penetrate much easier and give you a better result.
@angrymario82593 жыл бұрын
But it would be more fragile which they wanted to avoid
@leahgroess53613 жыл бұрын
I think this is a common "error" with the other clear wood videos. Cutting against the grain results in a pretty brittle piece, the wood grain having long connection points is one of the things that gives it stability. It's a difficult call to make, along with the thickness of the wood.
@Piccianify3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure Nilered tested that in his video as well and it did work better, but was more fragile/ pretty much dissolved after the bleaching...? I'd think the addition of resin might make it durable enough for that, if they get it in the resin before it breaks down too much. I also think a thinner resin, like maybe a stabilizing resin might work better in actually getting in the wood grain?

a tip for pouring stuff out of annoyingly shaped cannisters, have the hole be on top and start pouring from there instead of having the hole be lower than the majority of the liquid. this allows air to move freely so no gulping happens and it can help in the liquid coming straight out of the can instead of following along the side of it and dripping off from the bottom. Hopefully this message is understandable XD

Next project, figure out how to attach a child's kazoo to the exhaust port of the pressure pot.

Yes!!!!

I don't think that would work, cuz kazoo produces sound by humming into it, not blowing into it and I don't think pressure pots can humm. But it would be still interesting to try.

Common guys, always wear safety glasses when working with any compressed air. Valves fail and weird crap can happen and you only get one set of eyes. I care about you guys and want to keep you safe.

@29:35 Hot tip just for the future! You're pouring that can upside down, that's why the air isn't able to get into the can to replace its volume and allow it to flow smoothly! Same works for juice boxes, etc!
