"Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law." ROMANS 3:31
Many people use this scripture to try and keep believers under law, claiming that Paul says that we are supposed to uphold the law as Christians. But is this what the apostle Paul is really saying here, especially when you look at the context of his words?

Amen man. I was skeptical of Paul, until I saw that verse. Paul wanted us to uphold the Law, because we love God. Because God gave us His Grace, His Justification. We are Justified by our faith and belief in our Lord's Love for us, which He demonstrated on the Cross. But we become Righteous by keeping all of His Divine Law.

Read the book of Hebrews. The contexts was the early Jewish-Christians were being persecuted but the romans (Judaism was tolerated in Rome at the time while Christianity wasn’t. Those believers were scared and wanted to go back into their Jewish practices) Hebrews not only comforts them (and us ) of the complete work and High Priestly work of Jesus Christ. The believers at the time wanted to go back to their Judaism but Hebrews told them to not harden their hearts to the revelation and finished work of Christ. It was by belief/faith that they entered into God’s rest. And In unbelief would cause them to be outside His rest. Hebrews makes the parallel of entering in God’s sabbath rest through belief in Him and what His precious son Jesus’ completed work. As God finished creation on the seventh day He rested in satisfactory of his work, as Jesus fulfilled, cleansed us, filled us with his spirit etc etc, we rest in satisfaction of his work. “It is finished” after all. Those things were shadows of things to come, the substance found in Christ.

@Michael Staggs woah, that’s insulting. My salvation isn’t based off my doings but the complete work in Christ Jesus. Do you question the finished work of Christ? Was his job not good enough? I try my best to surrender to word of the Lord, trying my best to sincerely live for him each day because I love him so much, and he loves me so much and he loves you so much! no matter how hard I try salvation can’t be bought by works only faith and trust in Jesus. For it is grace through faith that we are saved, not of works, least we boast. I’m just trying to make Jesus my everything. And I ask/pray that the Holy Spirit guides to do so, and correct as he sees fit.

@Michael Staggs if that’s the case you are also a worker of lawlessness. All of have fallen short of the glory of God. All I can say instead of pointing fingers is I am sincerely trying my best to put my Lord Jesus Christ YHWH first in my life and above all things. He gets the glory. The Bible also teaches that there are different covenants. If the Holy Spirit needs me to have correction I pray that he guides me in his truth. Love fulfills the law of Christ Matthew 22:39-40, Galantians 6:2, Galantians 5:22-24 . I love the Word of God, and I am trying to understand it more. I could very well be wrong on things here and there, but I ask God bear with me as I try to understand. There’s a lot in my life I’ve repented of, took out of my life and stay away from for them sake of the Lord. And I’m growing and learning as you are as well. I’ll let the Holy Spirit be my teacher John 14:26 . I’m praying for us both brother, I hope you have a blessed day and may the spirit of God guide us both!❤

What about the shabbat? Everything else was mentioned but that one. The ONLY one God said to "remember" and keep Holy. After all, when that 24 hour period was blessed and sacrificed, it was during creation. It wasn't given to mankind until moses came about. What's your view on keeping Sabbath not for the law sake but for the Lord of the Sabbath's sake, who is our Lord and Savior Yahshua the Messiah of Nazareth???

If we are free from the law of sin and death , we will know it . We will not need a man to tell us what our status is. The law is sent to us to reveal our true sin. Only the Spirit of God can reveal sin. One's real sin is hidden until a person submits to God and Him alone, not to earthly wisdom. What most people think is sin is something made up by scholars who keep God's children in bonds. The gospel is something that frees us from the fear of man - any man!

The old covenant called perfect and a delight to follow in the Bible you think is powerless? Jesus didn't come to start a new religion and do away with Judaism. The new adds to the Olds promises. Not voids them. What did Jesus do or say that makes you think He came to delet the old? He said he did not come to do that. Deuteronomy 14 says not to allow anyone change the law. It is a forever ordinance. You have to learn your old testament better before you can really understand Paul and the rest of the New testament

@@hugoramirez7510 really? When Moses came down the mountain with the 10 Commandments, 3000 people were killed. When the Pentecost had fully come and the Holy Spirit fell, 3000 people were saved. The first miracle Moses did was to turn water into blood, signifying death. The first miracle Jesus did was to turn water into wine, signifying life and celebration. From the time the Jews left Egypt, there is not a single account of any of them dying, until after the 10 commandments were given. Sin is not imputed when there is no law. It was Grace before the law, and they should have stayed with that, instead of saying (in pride) that they can do ALL that He commands.

Why would Paul spend almost the entire chapter 3 of Romans stressing that FAITH in Christ will result in forgiveness of sins and NOT works of Law. Please folks dont 'cherry pick' one verse from the bible if all the others in a chapter say different! Look the greek word for 'establish' is HISTEMI which can mean to 'establish' or confirm. Paul uses the same word in chapter 10:3 where some were "going about to ESTABLISH their own righteousness". The syntax of the sentence suggests that this is an on going situation that these ones have felt for some length of time. They are trying to 'confirm' thy are 'righteous! So in 3:31 Paul is saying that by exercising FAITH they are 'confirming' the Law was good, right and led them to Christ ( see Ga 3:24) If it wasnt for God's Law to the Jews there would have been no "Shadow leading to the Christ" ( Heb 10:1) So that "Christ is the END of the Law, its fulfillment! This is well illustrated by remembering that the day of atonement which was part of the 'law' pointed to the "lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the World ( See John 1:29 ). Since there were 600 Laws given exclusively to the Jews ( Paslm 147:19,20) to 'keep the law' today is not possible since by secular law one cant be 'stoned' ( poss in some lands still!) Bulls & goats are not slaughtered by us at a temple! Theer is No levitical priesthood ( all legal records were destroyed by the Romans in AD70), so the 'law' is ALL the law which if one disobeyed ONE they were guilty of all. Every year atonement was needed for sins proving that trying to keep the law was not possible because we are all sinners! Thus God sent the Messiah, Jesus Christ who came to save us to "fulfill the Law" as he said himself! ( Matt 5:17). So Paul as Jew was showing that the Law was all part of what lead to Christ and when we show that faith, we have benefitted or 'established' the validity and purpose of the Law. But as Paul says we are not under the law now!

Yes, what you say is true. This LOVE is very misunderstood. We have to have a certain capacity to LOVE as taught by Jesus Christ in the parable of the talents, for us to be able to fulfil the Law, and this Love has to grow by obedience to the leadings of the Spirit. This is not a human kind of love but this love is actually explained in 1 Corinthians 13. We are not under the Law but we are under grace, which means, Love will allow us to fulfil the Law of God.

Paul said if it weren't for the law, I wouldn't know what sin was. Also he called the law good. Also when the gentiles came to synagogue he gave them four torah laws to practice until they came back next Sabbath. The law is still a good guide. Loving people is ambiguous. God's definition of love can be vastly different from humans. I get what you're saying, but the law still God's commandments. He is unchanging. The same yesterday today and forever.
