Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. We all know that “beauty” often comes with a high price to pay. I mean, worth it though, right? Who doesn’t like feeling beautiful? But what if I told you that “beauty” practices throughout history have been down right ugly? And not just any ugly-we’re talking foot binding, bone crushing, pube-plucking ugly. I guess the takeaway is that beauty standards have a shady past. And the question becomes: Who are we doing all this for?
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

As a young girl in Hong Kong, I saw my great-grandmother's bound feet with my own eyes. She was no longer wealthy, but stuck with these useless and painful feet. I saw her foot-binding cloths and I just felt so horrified, grossed out, and sad all at the same time. This was in the early 1980s. Thanks, Bailey for researching and talking about this!

For back pain I recommend a 5 minute stretching routine every morning to boost the flexibility and endurance of the muscles. This stretching routine is my best preventive solution for long work day without having to suffer the pain later in the evening. You can also do a self massage using a big towel, you simply roll it up or fold it in a shape of a swiss roll and put it across your back in a standing position, create a U shape and hold the ends and pull forward alternating between the right and left. The pulling creates a pressure on the muscles while kneading them until the pain is gone.

Which makes it even weirder that corsets are here as the myths and misinformation about them and how they "ruined our bodies" was made up by men in order to tear down women and feminine beauty standards. There is a lot of interesting literature on this and how damaging it is for modern day feminism to utilise the myths of corsetry because of the misogynistic history behind it and how it ignores how corsets were originally empowering for women as a support garment.

Tightlacing was actually not as common as it is believed. The myth of the corset that restricts your breathing was started by men (who also wore corsets for a time) and is perpetuated by Hollywood. Women would play sports, rock climb, do trapeze, all while wearing a corset. The padding in the corset does most of the work in creating the hourglass shape. I would recommend the videos of Karolina Zebrowksa for more information on corset myths.

After my fist child, like literally after birth at the hospital, my mother wrapped me up in a sheet, real tight like a corset so that my body would begin to go back to its original form and heal properly. And afterwards, my body looked amazing!-literally within weeks of giving birth. Corsets do work, they’re uncomfortable for the most part but they do work. Even a cheap one made from a sheet 😅. Lol, I left the hospital both times wearing my pre-pregnancy cut-off Calvin Klines. After getting home, I did swell a bit and ended up putting on something stretchy, but I was still proud of myself for all that! I'd gained between 30 to 35 lbs with both kids, Alyssa was 8lb.1oz. 19&3/4", Isaac was 9lb5oz&22",both a regular V birth. Crazy tho, within 3 months of both being born, my body gained all the weight, right back to the delivery day weight! So me before sis, 135, delivery day 165. 165 before Bug, 180 delivery day. I have NOT been under 180 since and it has been over 20 years.

Yeah, Bernadette’s video was more historical accurate. A corset was supposed to fit comfortably and was used just to create the illusion of a small waist, not to actually make it smaller. If it hurt or made it hard to breathe, that meant either they were wearing it wrong or had the wrong type of corset. Tight lacing wasn’t common placed and essentially the wrong way to wear a corset

The other types of corsets were used in many cultures for women who were recovering from childbirth. To say the info is completely wrong is in and of itself incorrect, humbly and respectfully speaking.

I personally stopped shaving years ago, and found myself specifically shaving for other girls, and their catty comments. My SIL saw how hairy my legs were before my wedding and asked me if I was going to shave, and I said probably not. I just don't like all the stuff that comes with hair removal, and the secondary pain, like ingrown hairs, razor burn, and friction burn. I am grateful I started doing what makes me comfortable in my body, and I hope others are living that way too, hairy or hairless.

***I love you so much Bailey! But I do have to say, for the sake of accuracy, tight laced corseting was not the majority. It was very extreme beauty standards that some people would take too far. Much like how we have some awesome crazies who wear insanely high heels. Most women back then wore corsets that were the measurement of their natural waist, but actually padded out the bust and hip area. It could be extremely comfortable, depending on if it fit you properly. Foot binding was way more widespread then tight lacing was. The reason you get those crazy pictures that show women with teeny teeny tiny waists, was they would actually doctor the images like photoshopping. They would try to have a very plain background so that they could color in parts of the waist to make it much smaller than it is possible. Most women who tight laced were actresses or in the public eye, which is why we see those (possibly doctored) pictures. Victorians really weren't very different from us. Lol! If the corset is made well, it only shifts soft skin to wear it's comfortable. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. 😆

I look forward to dress historians reacting to the corsetry section of this video. I hope they do, at least. I don't know if comments about how wrong it was will result in anything when the video's already here, with a quote from an author who has the gall to compare foot binding to corsetry, who is, oddly enough, an author of books on women's history. But she's not a dress historian, that's for sure. Considering the other articles on the Smithsonian site that literally dispel those same myths, it's disappointing they left that in her article or allowed it on their site. It's misinformation.

The funny thing about the Victorian and Edwardian eras is that you didn't actually want to look too thin, because that made you look poor. You can see plainly from images of the time that people who were considered beautiful were actually more on the plump side. Additionally, even larger women still wore corsets. It didn't make them thinner, it simply changed the shape of what was there and supported all the skirts and layers. Up until the invention of the crinoline in the 1850s, corsets were very necessary as they kept the weight of the many, many, many heavy starched petticoats from cutting into your waist. They did have many downsides, but what people fail to accept is that they were both practical and needed for the rest of the outfit to function. Even working class women wore corsets. Women performing extreme sports wore corsets. It didn't prevent them from living their lives any more than bras do now. In fact, they are generally safer than stuff like shapeware, because they kept the pressure off of areas that shouldn't have it (look into why frontlacing corsets are dangerous if you're interested), were made of breathable materials that wicked sweat (yes, there were sumer corsets), and they were made to individual fits (there were off-the-rack ones, but they could be altered).

@@nataliep501 Most women would prefer not to wear ill-fitting corsets that were not made for their body. If you actually read the first comment you would learn that women, including me, did EVERYTHING in them, including working and sports. I have worn a corset everyday for bust and back support as, I dont wear bras, for over 13 years! They are nowhere near restrictive and painful when worn correctly and obviously, like any garment, fitted properly. Its triggering because with someone like Bailey who has a whole research team that helps her dig up accurate info, I find it disappointing that there is so much well researched and accurate info on corsets all over the place now, and she had to include the ignorant misinformed info in her video instead...breeding more ignorance and scaring more people such as yourself. I wouldn't say I don't trust her, I just believe she may add certain false details for shock or entertainment.

Lol, I actually do wear proper waist training corsets. It's been years now and I can comfortably do high reductions (having a long torso helps). There's no need to do any reduction if one doesn't want that though. Most Victorian women didn't reduce. If you feel pain or can't breathe while in a corset, then something is wrong. Remember, women had to sing opera, do house work, haul heavy buckets of water, etc. all in corsets. Some men also historically wore them for back problems, high society, proto on job safety braces, etc. Corsets need to be picked based on your specific measurements. What fits me will cause pain for you (get as close to your measurements as possible if you buy off the rack instead of bespoke). You also MUST wear a layer between you and the corset. It will rub your skin raw if not. I can run, sing, eat, and breathe fine in a corset.
