As a young black girl, I looked up so much to the greats like Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday, Dorothy Dandridge, and Lena Horne. So much elegance and used their status to become activists for our community. I love when Bailey does stories like this on such a large platform because so many people truly don’t know the history these people have made. Thank you Bailey❤️ you’ll always have a plate at the cookout

I laugh at how when people dress up for the 1920s for Halloween or a costume party, they always do the generic flapper girl, Great Gatsby, or something so generic. WHY AREN'T PEOPLE WEARING BANANA SKIRTS, JEWELS, AND DRESSING THEIR DOG UP AS A CHEETAH TO WALK IT!!!! That would be 10x cooler than anything. I knew about Josephine Baker some, but not her early life. She was the coolest person ever.

My favorite Josephine Baker story is how she performed at the "battle of versailles" an epic fashion show in France in 1973. The battle pitted top French designers (Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, Marc Bohan, and Hubert de Givenchy) against American designers (Oscar de la Renta, Stephen Burrows, Halston, Bill Blass, and Anne Klein, who brought along her assistant, Donna Karan). The french models were very formal and walked with classical music, but the American designers had alot of black models who moved and danced down the runway to loud disco music. Josephine was reportedly so moved by how far America had come she went over to the American models dressing rooms and wept tears of joy. 🥺
