i am a 911 dispatcher for over 37,000 people in ohio! thank you for making an episode about what we do. our job can be so hard some days but dispatchers are some of the toughest people i know!! also, i think the eviction law is crazy, but maybe they are just talking about nuisance (aka - shouldn’t be calling 911) callers? like neighbor trouble, “is my power gonna come back on”, barking dog complaints, etc)

My mom was also a dispatcher and went on to be the head of the county’s 911 center. My Dad was also everything from street to chief of police. He told me the other day he was part of foot patrol during the Wayne Williams cases in Atlanta and that is when they first learned about carpet fiber forensics

I briefly lived in Norristown, PA, and to those of us from the Bux/Mont County area, it's known as the armpit of Montgomery County, so you'd be lucky to be kicked outta your place there. Lol. But seriously, that's so weird. I get that people there aren't really the brightest, but it's crazy to think they were making so many fake 911 calls that that had to be made a law. What is wrong with people?!

I am not a first responder but I work for the fire service and we just lost a member in a factory fire with another in hosp. I do not envy the comms officer (aka dispatcher) who had that incident or anyone on shift that night. I have little involvement with the operational side of things nor did I know the officer lost and yet it still makes me very emotional to read about.

Side story : lol a white man (we also know he’s was on the spectrum) was writing in chalk in front of my boyfriends house and we just watched very confused but never once thought of calling the police of being voilent. He got up and walked away when he was done and turns out he was writing Black Lives Matter in front of everyone’s home😂✊🏾 there are no excuses for these false calls!

As a former dispatcher, you hit the nail on the head. PAY THEM A LIVEABLE WAGE! I loved dispatching more than any other job I've ever had, but I had to leave because I couldn't support my family. Athletes make millions of dollars, but first responders can't even afford to keep a roof over their heads or food on the table. We need better priorities here. My best friend is a 911 dispatcher. Thank you so much for recognizing how they truly are the first of the first responders. She’s the one who hears people at their most vulnerable and desperate. She has on several occasions been the one to hear someone’s last words. She’s helped deliver babies and has talked a man off a roof. Fun fact: In Argentina, the emergency number used to be 101 but in 2006 they had to change it to 911 because people watched so many movies and series from the US that they'd automatically dial 911 instead.

In Chile we have different numbers for different emergency services and none of them ever stuck in my brain, I also don’t know anyone that knows them straight of the bat (we do know they’re variations of 121 numbers or something of the sort). But everyone knows 911, which is utterly useless to us 💀

I’ll never forget going on a daytime talk show with her (I wasn’t on the show, she was obv 😅) for helping a man deliver his wife’s baby in their home over the phone… it takes a certain kind of person that can detach from their personal emotions to do that job.

As a former dispatcher, thank you for this video and appreciation. I got paid $14 an hour in Colorado in 2018 and it’s insane how much is done by and expected out of dispatchers. I have mad respect for other dispatchers and for law enforcement/first responders for taking such low pay with little to no support for the trauma they experience.

As an NYPD officer i am so glad you did this story-we refer to our 911 dispatchers as central and they are our number one life line! We LOVE our centrals and i try to thank them every chance i get. As part of our training we go to the dispatch center and get to see them at work. I have such respect for them and wish they were paid way more for what they do!

@@malalalalala91 it depends on where you live. You should look up your state or city or country. But in the United States, for any state you do have to have a high school diploma or GED. And there is courses that are required for you to take. Some places require you to do clerical duties for a year before you can start working as a dispatcher. Depending on where you live, they require different things. And some require much more than this. You just have to look up where you personally live.

The movie Rabbit Proof Fence is part of our education curriculum and I think it’s important people know Australia has a dark history other than just being settled by convicts!

That would be a waste of time as the "do-gooders" have rewritten history such as "Dark Emu" by Bruce Pascoe who claimed to be "indigenous" but ancestors were from Cornwall UK... Sadly, for some insane or more likely, money making scheme, the real truth is buried.... When I had my second baby I had to call 999, the dispatcher was so incredibly helpful to me, he kept telling me I’m doing amazing and when I was having a contraction he was breathing with me to keep me calm and focused. When I said I’m pushing I heard a slight panic in his voice but then he instantly calmed down and said okay let’s do this together. Il never forget him, luckily the ambulance came before I delivered, but they told the dispatcher after I’d given birth and thanked him for me. To all you emergency dispatchers, thank you for everything you do daily.

My bff is a dispatcher and she told me that whenever someone gets to help deliver a baby, the other dispatchers all put money together to get them a special plaque and buy them food and they all celebrate. She also said that helping to deliver babies over the call is one of their favorite parts of the job. 💖

9:27 Huh, I remember the horrible attack that happened to Kitty a little differently. While she was screaming out for help, everyone in the apartment complex heard her. In fact, one of the Neighbors went over to another Neighbors place (via the roof entrance) to ask what they should do. I believe it was called the Bystander Effect. I responded to a 30 year old who was having a massive heart attack one day and he came back like a week later to thank me and my work partner for saving his life. He told us that he had an underlying heart condition he wasn’t aware of and he was now receiving medication for it. It was so amazing to have that closure because the heart attack was so severe that I didn’t know if he survived after arriving to the hospital and I thought about it for days until he came to the station. He was coding in the ambulance so often that I didn’t think he’d make it.

As a child in Sweden in the 80's our emergency number was 900000 😱 I still remember how to dial that on a rotary phone in the dark. Now we have 112 wich is a lot faster to dial. Scary to imagine but a very real issue. At least here We’re so short staffed that 911 calls just keep ringing until we’re able to answer them which could be a couple mins to up to 30. Most times people just hang up which just makes it an even longer wait

As a (now disabled) paramedic of 21yrs, thank you for bringing attention to our coworkers on the other end of the radio! They are the least recognized part of the emergency services chain. My Girl Scout troop decided to make thank you cards for our county EMDs after we roleplayed making 911 calls as part of their First Aid badge. I was pretending to be the 911 calltaker and they each took an turn "calling 911". After the each had a turn one girl asked to be the calltaker. After her turn was over, she noted that even though she knew it was pretend it was still kinda nerve-wracking.

Thank you! As a retired career 911 Dispatcher (police, fire and medical) this was an excellent explanation of the job. My daughter was often at the station with me while I was working as well! Thankfully when she got a little older, she changed her mind and said no thanks to that job lol... Our consoles being literally in the middle of the our station, not in a call center, we did get closure on all of our calls. We also were the jailers. 20 years was enough for me, physically, emotionally and mentally. It definitely took a toll. I did dispatch for 3 years. And to get hired it took about 6 months of various tests, evaluations, and multiple interviews. The hours were insane, it was very stressful and had terrible work life balance. But they are heroes. The first first responders. ❤so much love for the thin gold line 💛 not everyone can do that.

I knew it was an emergency, ordered my next door neighbor to wait for first responders at the locked gate to let them in and guide them to me (wanted to save vital time), while I was already dialing 9-1-1. The 9-1-1 dispatcher was great. I was as calm as I could be, but hearing the confirmation that CPR was needed… it was tough. She kept me calm, guided me through the steps even though I was CPR certified. I kept focused on her voice and did CPR until first responders arrived. My mom lived.

I learned about Kitty and 911 in my Social Psychology class about the bystander effect. It's such a sad story. Thanks for covering this history and I did a day with the 911 center for my CJ class and I have so much for appreciation for them. I also used to work as a deaf and hard if hearing relay operator. Loved the job but way underpaid.

This was so awesome and thorough! I saw something on tv about the death of a woman calling 911 that they couldn't go help her until she said "she needed assistance. After that a law was passed that they didn't have to get that verbal okay to go help. Unfortunately it didn't help her but helped others.

For the last part about people calling 911. For racial reasons. My friends and I were playing tag at night. It was 8 of us. The woman called the police and said there are black people trying to steal some cars. The police came and talked to us and asked if we saw anything we hold him no it just us running up and down the street. One of my friends ran past her car and she called them again and said we tried to steal her car. They came back again asked he then went to her and said “they’re kids playing and having fun. Call us again tonight you’ll get a ticket. For making false calls.” However I think they issues for her to leave the city( not sure but she moved out soon.). But a few of my neighbors didn’t like her bcuz she use to call and say people would speed on out street but the guys car was just loud.

As a current dispatcher, it is hard work and the national salary is so low because in spite of all of the effort and training we are required to go through, we are classified as administrative assistants. At my center, we are required to go through the state certification process, plus specific training for telephone CPR, emergency medical dispatch, fire dispatch, skills for taking calls from people who are deaf/mute, and all of the other specifics that are associated within the local. Thank you very much for acknowledging the work we do, the struggles we face, and the general lack of appreciation! As always Bailey, it was a dynamite episode! 🥰💜

Love the recognition Bailey. In the UK, my mom works for the A&E dept (ER) at reception and she usually doesn't find out either what happens to patients she has to register. She sees them go in, registers the injuries, then the nurses take over, so there's too many to follow up on. She wonders too. On the other side, did anyone else start singing the ghostbusters theme to themselves 10 secs after Bailey said it? 😂
