Using corrugated iron sheeting picked up from the scrapyard along with sturdy timber framing these raised beds are big enough for our beginner garden 🌱

Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Hey Theo and Bee. The beds look good, but you might want to add a board across the middle posts to stop it from bulging out in the middle. Can be added halfway down so it's not visible and just covered with the brush and compost. Cheers

Hi guys just an idea, if you put the wooden suports of the raised beds on the outside of the corrugated iron sheets they wont come in contact with the compost etc and therefore wont rot also you can use them to attach poles for netting etc as required, great video

The raised beds look great. One thing to watch for is as they fill with dirt, it may push out the metal sides, so you may have to reinforce the outside in the future.

Or if aesthetics matter, tie the posts together with their opposite internally so they can't move outwards and away from each other. You don't need to fill the whole thing either, only the top section.

The middle wood supports could be connected with heavy wire or some metal strapping about midway up. They supply that support when you buy metal raise bed kits.

Recommend putting in a diagonal wood brace from corner to center ... on the outside, to support the walls to keep them from bowing out. Then 1 brace spanning the top of the center supports to help with lateral spread. And a new bag of screws, lol.

I forgot to mention last week that when you have your raised bed done, the edges will be sharp to lean against. Use either pool noodles or electrical insulation around the edges so you will be protected when gardening.

I understand that you have a number of windows - these could be used to make some cold frames and hotbeds for over wintering and starting early spring plants. (Along with Bea's proposed greenhouse.) Also I would line the bottom of your raised beds with 8-10 cm of loose rock/pebbles/shingle/rubble to deter animals from burrowing up.

would have halved the height on them, the amount of dirt you need to put in there for a "small" growable area is enormous... and by halving them you would have twice the amount of beds/growable area and it would be an easier height to work with also remember to put in a brace between the two middle ones so the dirt doesn't push out the sides and make it bulge in the middle a ramp sounds like a great idea instead of steps down, would make it much easier to drive up and down with the wheelbarrow for sure

the idea of the hügelkultur is to fill it at least half way with garden debris before adding soil. The debris eventually rots down but it takes a long time and provides nutrients in the meantime. I built one this last summer and it worked beautifully.

Bea's caught the suns🤣🤣. I love that! The beds look great! Don't forget to layer soil in with the wood and vegetation when you fill the beds. It's the enzymes in the soil that break things down. I also want to recommend getting a couple sturdy 5 gallon pails. I used mine all the time in my yard. Can't wait to see the next thing you two get into.😊

Why, hello Drew and Brit!! Two of my top fave vanlifing couples finally meeting again! 🤗😍 As others have mentioned, I’d recommend filling the bottom of the beds with gravel/pebbles for drainage and skirting the sides a tad to avoid bottoming out. The area would eventually look just gorgeous if you fence it in, maybe add a greenhouse (with all the spare old windows!) and make little pebble paths in between, planting tons of flowers around to attract pollinating insects, medicinal plants and companions like marigolds, datura, nasturtium and comfrey... 🤗🌱🌾🌸🌸

Theo - Get some steel stakes to drive into the ground along the long side so the bottom doesn't blow out on you. You may need to put something in the middle around the 2/3rds up between the walls to deal with the top. Use dense stuff (clay if you can find it) first as you want to hold the moisture from wicking away into the ground. Then put something that holds moisture down then your soils. I did the same thing years ago saved my back!

Please consider building a ramp wide enough so you can bring the tractor down to the garden area because it will make hauling soil, compost and wood/broom in to fill the beds it’s so much more time efficient and it saves wear and tear on your body.

I watched a gardener make raised beds and they did it the same way you are. When you go and get wood chips get enough to put in the raised bed, they live in the wilderness of Alaska and they have trees all around them. So when they chopped down a tree to build their beds they would put the scraps of wood and then put the wood chips and sawdust over all the things they added to their beds. I think the raised beds are the best! Bee it has been wonderful to hear you laughing and having fun, I missed you and am very glad you doing better and Theo you are awesome, You are a very talented man and it’s fun watching you build things. People have already mentioned the possibility of the sides bulging out when soil is added. The solution to that is to set the base in the ground, and then add a simple metal strap between the two centre posts across the top. Nice looking job though.

I was thinking about a ramp with crushed rock as well rather than steps... since you have bedrock it'll save you from chipping away at it if you just build up on top if it. You might need to create a terrace of sorts with wood across it to hold the crushed rock at first but it'll tamp down and settle in place in time.

Hope you bolt them through. I built very tall raised beds (strong posts, wood slat sides) and the weight of the soil (etc.) ended up bulging the sides and no doubt over time, the sides would have popped off (I tore them down before this could happen).

The raised beds look great but I'd bury them deeper in the soil, maybe by a foot. The idea of filling the base with organic debris is great, but your main problem in Portugal will be that raised beds that high will dry out quickly, baking in the heat, and will require constant watering. The lower decomposition of organic material will add to your heat. On the plus side, these beds will do well in cooler 'mid season' weather.

You need to put a brace on top of the middle posts of the beds to stop them bellying with the weight of the soil ,also all tractors have a pipe on the silencer so you are not breathing toxic fumes into your lungs.

Gardening is one of those things that you don't have to start off being good at, it's a skill that "grows" on you with Sun, water and time. LOL!
