Michael speaks with Rachel Maddow about her new book, "Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism." The pair discuss how modern-day efforts to undermine democracy have a prequel dating back to before and during World War II when an ultra-right authoritarian movement tried to steer our nation toward an alliance with the Nazis. Rachel describes how members of congress got involved in spreading Nazi propaganda, how Henry Ford spread anti-semitism throughout the U.S and Germany and the figures who made sure we saved ourselves from ourselves.

As a child in the early 1940's, a precocious little kid with big ears, who adored her teacher father, way back in southeastern SD, for whom World War II was the war of my childhood with exposure to everything that turned up on the "magic radio box" -- I can still remember the contempt in my father's voice when he spoke of Father Coughlin, Henry Ford, Linburgh and the rest of that crowd -- and now, as an 80-something trained historian, listening to tonight's discussion, I am astonished at how tuned in my quiet, book-ish teacher dad must have been to the negative dynamics in the midst of his solid, upstanding Midwestern world..... And I'm thinking that maybe he was a great deal better educated and far more savvy than I would ever have thought possible. Thank you for this parallel discussion which not only provides great contemporary background but also provides a measure of hope that perhaps we in 21st century America are not quite as dumb as we have been behaving. And perhaps we will actually be able to save our democracy.....

We are not "as dumb" as those who would destroy our country and our democracy think we are. As with your dad, many, many Americans see through this plot. We won't be "talked out" of our votes and our rights under our Constitution.

@@basedgamerguy818 perhaps not a checkbook these days, but kids still need to understand how a bank account works just because your account shows money in your account when you look at it doesn't mean you don't have a charge that hasn't cleared. My daughter found this out the hard way. I have just seen way too many children who haven't been taught basic life skills, or coping skills. With the philosophy that everyone is a winner and no one is a loser, aka everyone gets a trophy; when a person gets into the real world it's just simply not the case and we see more anger and depression. It's almost like we are setting kids up to fail in some cases. Not every child fits this perspective for sure and society's demands on a family that requires two working parents is a big challenge. I remember my daughter yelling at me for saying no to something. She said I wasn't being fair even though I told her the spending limit before we went in the store. I told her in front of everyone life isn't fair, if it was fair I would have millions of dollars and not have to deal with all the BS I deal with daily, but guess what life isn't fair! My daughter has grown up since then and she told me even though she was mad at the time it was a valuable lesson in life.

The problem begins in preschool when our children are made to salute the American Flag as if it represents something infallible, of perfect moral character, and without blemish or blame. This idea is further embedded by the history classes where every action taken was for the good of our own citizens or the rest of the world. Just as the true character of Ford and Lindbergh are never mentioned, the bad decisions and intentional misdeeds of our country is never mentioned. No one can properly address a problem that they refuse exist.

My dad fought in WWII as a pilot. So I got mixed feelings about him being a hero to the family while hating Jewish people. We were brainwashed that the Jews were bad because they killed Jesus. Thank you Swedish Covenant Church. My 4 out of 5 brothers bought that narrative. I was born in 1952. I doubted so much of the stories coming out of our church, supposedly bible based. I couldn’t fact check because I never understood the Bible. What I did understand was sheer fear. I wasn’t good enough to get into heaven. Ergo, I struggled with guilt for being a bad Christian. I didn’t hate anyone. I was so disappointed with god because god only wanted Jesus believers to live in heaven with him. Now with knowing this history that Rachel has researched, the puzzle pieces fall into place. Father, pilot drank the nazi propaganda coolaid. Being Swedish he was the superior race. Ironically he marries a first generation Sicilian. We as kids weren’t allowed to visit our “ignorant “less than” siciliano grandparents except at Xmas or thanksgiving. Every frickin year there was a fight on the way to the family dinner and a fight on the way home until I left home at 18. I went to live near my brother who was not racist, in Hawaii far far away from IL. MY family was so toxic. My mother wasn’t any better, she hated Jewish people also. Thank you, Rachel❤🎉came back to say i bought the audible version of Prequel, narrated by Rachel. 🎉🎉🎉🎉

When are Christians going to learn that according to the tenants of their own precious book Jesus had to be killed in order to fulfill his purpose and die for their sins. It's ridiculous. "He died for our sins" "That god so loved the world...his only begotten son...". Good grief. Of course they killed Jesus. Someone was going to kill Jesus. That was the whole plan. So now their mad at the people who enacted the plan to the point where they vilify their descendants forever? " I hate being saved. Jesus should have lived. Lousy joose". Morons

First I annoyed my folks by wanting to learn more about Japan, then I upset them by taking 4 years of German in high school. Mom was the outright racist (not so much about Jews as there were literally none of those around in our part of Pittsburgh, but definitely about Blacks) and Dad was the quiet racist who'd actually known some Blacks back in the day but other than that they weren't "our kind of people."

I have watched Rachel Maddow with joy in my heart from the time she was a frequent guest on MSNBC's, Keith Olbermann's show. She was always a direct, kind, smart and insightful guest at that time. She has taught me much over the years. Today, she is one of the best journalists and historians of our time. Unfortunately, the people I knew who considered themselves Republicans or Conservatives will not listen to her. To me, the reason is clear. She is a relentless truth seeker who has the courage to express clearly what she learns and knows. Her last book needs to be read by every American so we can extricate ourselves from this most recent disaster of Trumpian Republican politics. Years ago a different term would have been appropriate for what is happening in America.

Rachel Maddow has cemented her spot in history by studying and expertly documenting this story for all future generations. The sad thing is how this part of our history was squashed and ultimately hidden from the country for 70+ years. I have to say that, while I am still shocked by the current political mess we are living through, I am comforted by the knowledge that it has happened before and the country persevered. Thank you Rachel

The difference is, that back then ppl werent in a cult of personality. They actually cared about the fact, once they found out, hence why those traitors were all voted out. Today, any facts, that doesnt fit their cult, are dismissed as lies and fake news, and they truly do not care, they just want their guy to be dictator.

The story about Henry Ford reminded me of my father. He was a 1947 graduate of the Henry Ford Trade School. Henry Ford set it up at one of his factories. He provided a secondary education totthe young men of Detroit, In addition to his own version of High School, he provided a technical education, teaching them in the skilled trades of Ford factory workers. What is not really talked about is the moral and psychological training these guys got. I came across my uncle’s copy of a moral hygiene textbook at my aunt’s house. At the time, I was not aware of the Nazi propaganda that Ford propagated. I was not watching for that as I skimmed a few pages. I did stop and read about the coping methods they told the boys to use when they were upset by something. We, today, would call it “stuffing” emotions. They were tools to “keep a stiff upper lip” and just carry on with what they had to do. I wish I had swiped that textbook when I had my hands on it. It might give us more insight into what exactly Ford was teaching these young men. How did those 8000 graduates of his private academy influence events through their lifetimes? Did others of them, besides my father, join the Michigan Militia in the 80s? Were conspiracy theories about Jewish bankers a part of the teachings at school? Did that contribute to beliefs men like my father later had against the United Nations and other groups working toward world-wide standards?

@@alumpyhorse USA is 46th on the Press Freedom Index for a reason. 8 companies control 90% of US media. 6 companies have 77%. America is the most misinformed OECD member and 4% of the world population killed 20% of the Covid patients after CDC told the media owners and donors "80% of Covid deaths are 65 and over" and FICA was proposing a payroll tax hike. 666,000 FICA recipients refused vaccines because it was a hoax and died, FICA canceled the tax hike while the Mortuary Service index spiked to a 27,5% gain in Aug of '21. Churches won big time as funerals increased attendance. Especially when preachers were telling their over 65 parishioners "Trust Jesus Not the Fauci ouchee". Death is a cottage industry in America. Children are harvested at schools for GOP campaign donations which always spike after a mass shooting to quell calls for gun safety. The #1 cause of children's deaths is gunshots. "Well, that's the price of freedom," said one GOP rep. Killing your children for money is a Christian thing, I think. I'm an atheist and expat with two kids who never faced a gun shooting drill because Mitch needed to keep control of the GOP funders. Freedom to bribe elected officials and judges, freedom to kill children for donations (renewable resources?), freedom to feed the public lies disguised as news, freedom to triple the national debt due to tax cuts for the 1% while blaming FICA recipients for the same debt. Red states are dumber than owl shit and cut their own throats regularly, for Jesus.
