I am Italian/American and was raised, until I was 15 on Long Island by two very racist parents and extended family for that matter. We moved to FL in 1970 when l was 15. I'm 68 now. I heard all the racial crap growing up. When l was 15, I went to a George Wallace rally with my bigoted father, who DJT reminds me of. I was cheering with him. Ugh. By the time I turned 17, I said hell no! This is not who I am. I dated a Puerto Rican guy who was not permitted in the house. But the best was yet to come....long story short, I threw away all the shit that was pounded into my head and took my own path. I started voting at 18 and l have never voted for a R and l never will. I've always known who they were. You have to get yourself out of that mindset. I did. It can be done! I'm a lefty, baby boomer. Go figure???

Keep in mind that systemic racism was directed at my black descendants from the core. Not saying that no one else has suffered at the hands of racism, but as a black 71year old woman from Indianapolis, Indiana, home of the KKK in Elwood, we as black people were the absolute target. To this day, I have never and will not ever visit Elwood. Excellent podcast, one of my favorites. Thank you Michael and Mary!!!

Thank you both! I was in high school in the early 1970's, and in our English class a Japanese-American classmate wrote a story about her mother being Interred at Tanforan Detention Center during World War II. I was angry with her and said They would have TOLD us about that in school if it were true!! At the age of 16 I began to Question Authority, as they used to say. I was devastated that I had been betrayed by my education. It is a heartbreak that people on the Right are trying to do this now. Thank you for this great discussion.

From your description, I’m about the same age as you. In high school, history or social studies or what ever they call it these days, was propaganda. For a true history of the country, you need to do it yourself. Maybe it’s improved since I was in school but I doubt it.

@@douglashogg4848 Bill Cosby had just made his documentary about Black cowboys in America, which we were shown, so some things were getting better. Also, at some point, I think in high school, we saw a GREAT documentary about what is propaganda, starting with advertising and working up into politics. It has helped me ever since, and was one of the most pertinent thing to come out of high school, I think!

I had a conversation with a doctor from Uganda who told me that America was paying the African dictator Idi Amin Billions of dollars. I was angry with him and said that we would Never do that. Two years later 60 minutes told the story of how many millions of dollars a day the government was sending to the dictator. America's history is dark in so many ways that keeps its citizens ignorant and arrogant, a very dangerous combination.

I would add that what has happened and is still happening to the Native American population is something that needs to be included in the difficult conversations we need to have. Unfortunately, and weirdly, what happened to the people who were HERE...whose land this belonged to originally...is almost always left out. It's also a reckoning that needs to be addressed.

I am constantly bringing up this point in Many Conversations. Terrible things have happened and are still happening to Many peoples but the Indigenous Peoples, First Nations seem to always be forgotten. They were pushed aside, enslaved, murdered, restricted, hated and like Mexican people were here when everyone else came to the United States. It is time that honest history be taught in All school, not banned, hidden, ignored and lied about. We need to learn about all Racism and if you don't know about Industrial schools or Indian Boarding Schools and the government/church mandate to "kill the Indian in the child", then you are missing a huge amount of history and present day problems.

What a great conversation between two of my favorite people! Growing up white in middle-class America in the 60's/70's, I experienced a lot of what they discussed. It took me decades to understand how I was unintentionally programmed during my upbringing and course correct my beliefs about race and class. Intelligent rational conversations such as this one is a masterclass in critical thinking and what it means to be a responsible citizen in modern America. Maybe it should be required for all adults.

You had better be careful. It is unconstitional for force someone to go to diversity training. This is why so many collleges and universities are writing unconstitutional and unconstitutionally vague speech codes. F.I.R.E. The Foundation of Individual Rights in Education, has gone in and exposed this, represented students for free, now the student can sue big time, for having their rights taken away, and get to go to college free, once they settle out of court with a non disclosure agreement. They thank you and the college and universities stupidity for trying to make them dumb, when you are. Biden hasn't taken care of paying off student loans, because it is unconstitutional he knew it, but used it to get voted in.

Another piece is the fight for bail reform. People who can’t afford bail (non-white, primarily men) stay incarcerated; those who can afford bail (white, privileged, etc.) are released. Crime is then blamed on liberals who are letting “violent criminals” out of jail and destroying society. So offensive, so destructive, so misguided, and as wrong (and evil) as can be. Thank you for this conversation.

Thank you so much for the topic! I’m a white 50+ cis woman. I grew up feeling shame for the color of my skin, every time I learned of another historical atrocity. I assumed people of color wouldn’t want to know me; very understandable in my growing mind. The full context of race in America was not taught in the public schools I attended. Then came George Floyd, and the groundswell of understanding broke over the country. For me, it was profoundly freeing. Now I know as a anti-fascistic, anti-racist, I can and do work alongside people I was physically separated from. Nothing changes we humans without some level of pain’orcdiscomfort… let’s hope we can put a permanent end to the Civil War.

She raised her 3 children in the 1980's in Berlin , Germany . She is a Professor of Philosophy at the Einstein Institute in Berlin, Germany. She makes many good points. There are no statues to Adolf Hitler or any other Nazi in Germany. Unlike the USA , where there were statues of Confederates who lost the Civil War and like 45 NEVER admitted that they LOST April 9,1865! She has had many conservations with black leaders in the USA. I was fortunate in being raised by “woke” parents. Born in 56, was a voracious reader at a very young age devouring everything from The autobiography of Malcolm X to Dostoevsky and more; remember the assassinations of King and both John and Bobby Kennedy; was aware of the the Civil Rights atrocities and more. I even have a letter of response from the Johnson White House because I thanked the President for Voting & Civil Rights work done 😂. At 66, I am disgusted with the fact that all these fights are still going on and getting worse. So many rights fought for are now being stripped away rapidly.

I was a white kid who grew up knowing intimately black families and their issues as my best friends were often black. They had people in their families who were lynched, for instance. Also, my family knew Freedom Riders and friends and personal teachers of Martin Luther King Jr. I consider that very fortunate. When Emmett Till's destroyed face in a photograph showed up in Jet Magazine with his ruined, destroyed face so courageously shown to the world by hus mother, I had a meltdown, begged my Mom to let me go on the Freedom Rides. But I was only 14 years old, a girl, not much older than Till. My mother never forgot how mad I was until the end of her life (she lived to be 100 years old, one of the first white women to join CORE in the 1940' - she introduced me to George Houser, one of the founders, and voted twice for Obama). Pres. Obama sent her a birthday card she was so thrilled on her 100th birthday (born 1917).

Thank you both for this important conversation. From my perspective as Hispanic woman who experienced childhood discrimination: we spoke Spanish, we were a large family, we were farm workers, our skin color was shades of brown, we were not allowed to live in certain neighborhoods. The experience was traumatic primarily because the people who treated us as though we were so different from the “acceptable visual people” was painful. Yet, within the confines of our family we were taught to appreciate with pride who we were and what we contributed to world in a diverse society. We were taught to be forgiven of those who treated us with disrespect - as my father would say - those people are ignorant to who we really are - we are the people who help build strong communities. On assimilation: this was taught in the schools - only speak English, wear the right clothes, shoes, and don’t eat beans and tortillas, oatmeal, etc!!! In other words, don’t be who we were - pretend to be like the acceptable people (blond, blue eyes, fair skin). Having brown skin, black hair, brown eyes was not the desirable way to look - so we were shamed and labeled as different!!! Again, thank you for this important conversation!!!

The PRIMARY, GROUND ZERO target of Systemic Racism is the African American decendant of chattel slavery. Understand that the plight you suffered is collateral damage from the main target of White Supremacy. In actuality, there is a double healing that the Latin community has to go through. All of what you described earlier PLUS repentance for the anti-African attitude that is perpetuated by the entire Latin American world. Don't just simply be offended, the way that Mary Trump describes how some Whites become when the issue of Racism and White Privilege are mentioned. Be honest about the 'Pecking Order' games that all Races play when it comes to White Supremacy and Systemic Racism.

What a good discussion on a very deep level...we need more of this. I think about 40% of our society (at least) does not want to face that our moral compass as a nation is totally out of whack. We have to look at a very basic level at what we think is right and wrong in how we treat our fellow human beings. And I want all kids to look at books that discuss history openly...none of this banning books nonsense. The more you censor ideas, the more people will actively seek out that very information.

Phenomenal discussion! I am a white middle class 72 year old New Englander. My parents raised us to respect everyone and to treat them respectfully. I believe that since we all have the same father (God) we really are brothers and sisters. Your open and informative talk made me realize that there is much more in play behind the scenes at this point. We do need to make it right...for everybody. How? I am not sure. I do see that we are going backwards, but we need to be open to being informed and fight against the inequality, especially those who are trying to perpetuate the old ways. We MUST talk about it. THIS talk is the type of educating we all need because it ties together the little snipets of knowledge that do not make sense unless the entire picture is given. The two of you should do a series of conversations helping us how to understand things. We do need to come together and heal. More in-depth discussions, please!

As a country don't we want ALL of our ppl to be successful especially since other countries are doing a better job at taking care of their sick, the old, their children aren't being gunned down at school and are getting fully education w/o debt. We'll all fall behind other wealthy countries and won't be able to compete. It's prosperous for us as a country to help the vulnerable so we can all be prosperous together!

Indeed. As a Scandinavian, I get really tired of Americans calling us socialists. We're not, nor have we ever been. We're a social democracy. We actually rank above to far above the US on being capitalist, being a good place to start a business, ppl having more money to spend etc etc etc. Not to mention, that we're always at the top of the freedom and happiness indexes. But being an accountant, I also try to explain to Americans, that its not just the human thing to do, its actually very beneficial economically. Coz free, happy ppl, who do not have to worry about getting sick, coz they will be taken care of, who have many worker and consumer rights and protection, so they dont have to worry all the time, who have the free time and money to be with their families, travels, whatever - they make much better workers! And they contribute to the economy with their work AND with their spending, they keep the economic wheels turning. Theres actually plenty of studies, that show, that countries with higher taxes, who use those taxes to pay for ppls healthcare, education, proper pensions etc, and who have a high level of regulations and protections, have a better and healthier economy too. But far too often I just get "but 'Murica!!" thrown back at me, coz apparently nothing counts, if its not the American way. U guys do some things really well. But theres also a whole lot, u could learn, if u were willing to admit, that ur country isnt the best at everything, and if ur willing to look at other countries and learn, both from our successes and our failures.

As an American I’m kinda offended, but you’re right about a lot too. We are lucky that more people are getting involved in this experiment of democracy is full of peril and we are blessed to have our younger generations are so involved and so passionate about our freedoms. They are way more “we want to live with love and freedom. I thought by the time I was 57 things would changed with how we treated each other. I have never understood why anyone would want live in hate. There’s a movement in our younger generations. I couldn’t be more hopeful that we will see something great.

I am white but very blessed to have had a kindergarten teacher that I loved who was beautiful loving and so much fun and she was black in Philadelphia. She appreciated me and I loved helping her. That relationship was always a blessing for me in so many ways especially as the isolation in Catholic school that I had in 1-9. That was 1969. So many white people my age had to be awkward and not exposed to the good people like Mrs Guy so they believed stereotypes and had no tangible black people to relate to

It's the same thing that happened to the Italians and Eastern Europeans. The white elite need more recruits to keep up the hate and divide to keep their coins. Sadly, many Latinos take the bait for ego, power and authority. It's kinda easy in that community because racism and colorism is fully embedded.

So glad you are talking about this.I am Canadian the white patriarchy has a lot to be accountable with our indigenous people and the atrocities our country has done to them.Just the other day I read that King Charles111 has invited a PHD student to go into the the British archives to study slavery in relation to the history of White monarchy and how it contributed to it.I think the whole world has a-lot of work to do in relation to accountability of white supremacy, white privilege and patriarchy.Unfortunately around the world there are no enlightened leaders to lead us out of this place. It’s always the same old status quo.I think the whole planet needs to transform and needs to reconstruct our thinking on how we move forward.Unfortunately not in my lifetime!Great to listen to this conversation 👍

People need to understand the unconscious/subconscious mind, Yes as a white person we might have the intention not to be racist and view everyone as equal but we need to know, like Mary said, if we grew up in a certain time, a certain place, with unenlightened people, unenlightened media we have some racial bias in our subconscious/unconscious so we need awareness and humility and work to unravel it. Reading and listening to conversations (like this) is very helpful/key to more awareness.

So true! It's interesting. My daughter said to me a couple of months ago, she said you know I try not to be racist but I always feel something different when I'm around a black person. We live in a very red state and a very homogeneous area where there are very few people of color. But it's important. I told her it's important to acknowledge how you feel and acknowledge that and then go on to do what you can to try and change that within yourself. I think that's something too many people don't to do. They don't look within and acknowledge how they grew up, they just somehow react emotionally without finding out why and doing what they can to change that dynamic going forward.

An Amazing conversation, thank you both! Michael, when you spoke early on how you started to wonder if you were the only person who feels like this, I'm right there with you. The widespread unwillingness to talk about the race-based principles which lurk in essentially every corner of American society and legal/regulatory code often lead us to struggle to explain WHY our systems produce the results they do. But it only takes a few well-presented examples to finally see the patterns. Books like 'The Color Of Law" and "Caste" show in crystal clarity (for those of us without the lived-experiences) WHY a city council would rather demolish a public swimming pool then desegregate it. Or WHY a major political party would rather defund Medicare and Social Security then see them become easy, affordable and widely used by black people. The climate crisis and the accompanying transformations that it is already forcing, provide the catalyst to reimagine all our systems and build more inclusive, equitable, and efficient versions to carry the future. It's humanity's greatest challenge to date, and America's greatest opportunity to date as well. You're not alone. And from a millennial, and former Army officer, you both have my deepest respect.

Brilliant dialogue. All I can say is Yes and Amen. I am currently reading Jeff Sharlet's book" The Family." Early on the point is made that the Religious Whites that first immigrated to this continent held to the heresy that They were the New Israel, that He had finished His covenant with the Jews, and that this new land spread out before them was the New Promised Land. That was the basis for the justification of genocide of the indigenous populations, and the enslavement of kidnapped Africans, to build their structures. They considered themselves God's Chosen. That falsehood was the rack upon which the rest of our crimes hung on. That was the prevailing mindset of the Western Europeans that first settled in North America. The presumption and arrogance and ignorance was and is stunning. That it prevails four hundred plus years later is beyond shameful. It is willful ignorance. Until that myth is destroyed, the racial divide as well as Antisemitism will continue to devour us as a nation. We are, Mary, as you said, poised over a precipice. This is most serious. If this nation succumbs to Authoritarianism, there goes the rest of the world. That vision is horrifying. What ever differences between Republicans like Michael Steele and Democrats like Mary Trump needs to be put to the side for now. Of primary urgency is the preserve what little Democracy remains and build ftom there. We can sort out differences once the nation is well away from the brink of disaster. Thank you both for civil and intelligent interaction.

My hope is that the new generation will not tolerate this type of behavior - and much needed change will be happening - like in the state of Tennesse. I am with them on the same train. Thank you both for putting on this show, it is the first step - as a country this is a diaogue we should be having in each and every state. We can and should do better.
