I got a young GE Neri fig plant online from Almost Eden. It’s small still but the leaves look very similar to your Jim Wilson. The figs are supposed to be very large. In fact, I went looking for a fig tree that produces very large figs after watching your first video about the Jim Wilson. The GE Neri is what I came up with. I also have a brown Turkey fig tree that is maybe 7 years old that I got 25 pounds of figs off early this month. Best harvest yet, and there are tons of figs still on the tree.

I should add I’m in 7b.

Thanks for the tip. It's definitely not a brown turkey but I'm debating on whether or not it's an Olympian. The problem with that is that they are side by side right now and the growth pattern is so different and my Olympian doesn't even come close to the fruit production. Leaves and figs look similar though and ripen at the same time. I'll keep an eye on things.

I am here for the figs. I love roses, but we have gophers...and I hear they eat rose roots. IDK if that's true, but haven't tried it. We stick to pygmy date palms, Mexican palms, bird of paradise, and agapanthus (lily of the valley). They don't touch those. Everything else is in a pot, including citrus, figs, pomegranates, etc... Figs are definitely like wine...luckily I like A LOT of wines and I like a lot of different figs! LOL!! "I don't know, maybe it's time to move, guys!" Haha!!

Sounds like a beautiful area. All you can do is try and see how they turn out but I'll bet we can grow a lot of similar things. Just for comparison, we're right around 450 feet here so you are much higher and like you mentioned, that changes things.

I have eaten figs off of a tree before but I wasn’t particularly impressed with the taste of it. Maybe I should have put it into the refrigerator first. But I do really like them when I order them when they are dried. In Southern California as a kid my dad picked dates and I could eat them all the time! But figs makes a great cookie! It’s seems to absorb water quickly than my other fig trees. I’m thinking I need to up pot it. I’m thinking about doing this in the next week or so. Would this be too late to do so? If not too late then what fertilizer can I use in the soil for the up potting? If it’s too late what can I do to give it added nutrition? I’d like to get figs someday. Thank you Yung

@heystevo5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, it's good to know that the Stella fig is doing well for you. I love the brebas as they are so big. Your trees are farther along than mine and I'm guessing that's because of all of our cold nights in the spring. My first main crop figs should be in a few days and they are from Florea. It will be my first time tasting them. My Jim Wilson figs are producing well, but nothing ripe yet. Did you ever get the cutting of the fig that tastes like a combination of sweet peach and tangy apricot to grow? It may be a Brunswick, but I bought it years ago from Edible Landscaping so who knows? I've set a couple airlayers on it and one has your name on it if you didn't get the cutting to grow.
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
I did get that one to root and kept 1 in a 1 gallon pot. It's growing well but no fruit this year. I've got it labeled Steve's Peach/Apricot. Thanks again for the Stella. It's going to be a great fig for my area and tastes really good. My Jim Wilson is starting to ripen all those figs, they're really drooping over now and darkening a little. I think it will be a few more days to a week. I've been waiting until the last second to pick these figs just to get every bit of ripening I can out of them.
@heystevo5 жыл бұрын
I'll let you know when my Jim Wilson figs ripen. I've still got them labeled as Plantation fig. I'll finally get to try my first RDB (Ronde de Bordeaux) fig this week. I've heard that it doesn't like a hot dry climate, but so far, it's doing okay for me. Do you remember the Black Turkey or Hatfield fig that was on figbid a year or two ago? It is ripening figs now and I found one today that had dried on the tree. It tasted okay, but I've got a bit of a cold, so my sense of taste is muted right now.

I've been wanting this type of fig Stella. I found one tree from a nearby company and asked one branch. I cut it into small sizes, but was not expecting it to be successful because I forgot and left it under the heat of the sun (mid summer) for a half day! It was dried already, but had like an experiment how it will survive by putting it inside a bucket of water for 3 hours and planted it. Watering everyday was all I can do without the expectation as it is only placed to some other plants in pots, so, watering was not a big hassle. Out of nowhere when I tried to transfer some of my plants for protection from a severe typhoon today Oct. 12, I saw some tiny leaves coming out. I was like...Wow, what a surprise! So, it is just like that when I will propagate something from cuttings. Super love this type. Oh, I have a zebra type too. How about you Mike, do you have it? Looking forward my zebra type to bear fruits, hoping next year.

Mike, Mike, Mike, we have some fig talking to do! First, I have a question: you've said a couple of times a word I'm not sure what it is but it sounds like "braebers"? Please, can you tell me the correct spelling and what you mean exactly by this? Second, some really interesting fig leaf structures in your collection. The Stella fig was interesting but I noticed the skin hadn't torn yet. Figs are fully ripened when the skin begins to tear open - you see lateral tears from top to bottom. Third, man, you ate that fig with the skin on! You're supposed to peel the skin off! The skin might be bitter or it might have contamination on it, like bird poo or insect eggs or larvae! Fourth, have you ever weighed your ripe figs? You need to start weighing them! The biggest I've ever had is 240 grams, and last year the biggest I had was 187 grams. This year, so far, I had a 150 gram fig, with the majority coming in at 100 - 110 grams. Hope your pinky is better! Best wishes from London.
