We sail in the Great Lakes area; last summer we were anchored at the southern most spot in Grand Traverse Bay by Traverse City...the wind switched from the south to the north which was pushing all of the energy down the entire Grand Traverse Bay. It was just awful. The boat was heaving up and down so bad we didn't want to leave the boat in case we started to drag. We saw one boat lose theirs and get pushed onto the beach. We had our dog Ady on board at the time; I took her to shore and the dingy almost got completely swamped. That lasted over 12 hours. It was so exhausting. I feel your pain with a rolly anchorage and not getting any sleep. Also after watching your video's I'm not sure if we'll ever want to sail to Costa Rica! lol Great video's!

Great honest video - thanks. For someone who gets travel sickness in cars, and seasick on big boats (havent tried on small boats), is there hope that over time, someone prone to seasickness gets ‘used’ to the motion and is able to cope or is it a situation that, if you are subject to motion sickness, your body is not meant for a life on the sea? Very curious as you inspire me to travel on a boat…..Love what you do and how you do it.

Hey Laurence! We do think people get used to being on the water and over sea sickness. We have been fortunate in that we don't get sea sick very often but it does occasionally happen, it always passes though! There are alot of sailors who are prone to motion sickness and they seem to find a way to cope. Some use medication, but most seem to just let it come and let is pass.

Outstanding video. It’s good to get glimpse of your “challenges” while sailing and at anchorage. A rolling anchorage doesn’t look like much fun. Good that you have raisins and crackers for those occasions. I share in your concern of the environmental landscape of dead plastic. It seems the sea is regurgitating and giving back the human trash that apparently is dumped in the oceans. A sad situation. Many have witnessed the transition away from glass and metal containers in lieu of plastics. In retrospect, a good and effective plastic recycle plan would have been a strategic adjunct to this new technology called plastics (decades ago). New research is emerging about the deleterious effects of single use plastic exposure in humans, especially related to food and drink plastic storage containers. Thanks Trent! We have also noticed many people transitioning from plastic to glass/metal containers. It is our hope that some of the big manufacturers such as Coca Cola will do away with their plastic packaging. That would be huge for our planet! We have noticed many restaurants serve Coke in recyclable glass bottles. Gary went to buy a cerveza at a local grocery store and he was told he had to pay a deposit for the bottle and he'd get the deposit back when he returned the bottle....every bit helps! We honestly didn't realize what a huge problem plastics were until we started traveling. When you see plastics floating around miles from where the trash initiated it is quite alarming. Question. Would sleeping in hammocks help combat rolling anchorages? I know sleeping in a hammock isn’t great, but it’s better than not sleeping.

Hey there! Yeah we have tried sleeping in a hammock a couple times. Sometimes in a hammock it's a bit manageable but other time's the hammock seems to get swinging and the motion is worse than trying to stay in bed. It really depends on the swell direction and timing between swell.

I think you might be happy to know that Puntarenas FC made it to 1st division and is doing awesome in the first places of the leaderboard! Guacamaya is a great anchorage. Samara is terrible.. that’s why when we sail from Puntarenas to Guanacaste, we do it in one single shot to Potrero.. Murciélago is beautiful, but extremely dangerous if the wind blows. So many wrecks on those rocks.. Bahia Santa Elena was just around the corner and is very sheltered… hope to see that you left unharmed on your next episode.. cheers!

Live in CR, and have my boat at puerto Azul. As you noted the pollution and red tide is horrible, sad,depressing and what is going on with this Runaway planet, with no destination. Costa Rica government has to do something, punterenas is like such a cool place, with alot of potential, buy at this time it appears that the gulf of nicoya is dying! Wake up! I will continue to do my part, but this is a world wide problem! Costa Rica is not just rainforest and waterfalls. Every river that leads to the ocean is polluted! How is this permitted!

@@SailingOneLife yes, alot of potential. Even with the problems i love it. Yes worldwide problems. I think it was 50 years or more that Galveston bay actually caught on fire, so much oil in the Bay. I spent my career in merchant marine, and now even a cup of oil is a big fine, but accidentes still happen. Smooth seas! All the best!

Where is the transmission oil leaking into?

Into a plastic container I positioned underneath it. And if it got past that, we have a retention area under the engine/transmission that keeps any leaks from going to the bilge pump. The oil that leaks out is poured into the empty bottles for future disposal. 👍

No room inside, but we do hang a hammock over the foredeck sometimes. When it gets THAT rolly though, the hammock gets swinging violently and will launch you right out! 😂

It was not fun! We do not have a flopper stopper but sometimes we do put out a stern anchor to position us into the swell better.

We noticed this while in the San Blas Islands, Panama. These indigenous villages are built on pretty flat, low lying atolls. Some of the infrastructure around the edges of the islands are starting to be underwater during high tide. Many of the people are having to abandon their homes and take refuge on Panama mainland. Quite sad to see. There is also an island in our San Blas guidebook (published in 2015) that is probably half the size it was only 7 years ago.

I am new to your channel. I have a strong desire to finish out my life in a sailboat at sea and use these channels for education. Too often what I see is very little education and way too many thumbnails and content that revolves around string bikinies and butt shots. I like a pretty girl as much as the next guy, but a sailing channel should, in my humble opinion, contain some content about what to expect if your serious about sailing around the Americas. Thank you so much for showing the last episode and this one. I lived in Puerto Rico from 99 to 2005 and have learned not everything goes as planned if your used to a tidy life in the USA mainland.

@@SailingOneLife I was a welding inspector for Fluor Global. I lived all over. FRom the central area around Louzia , to Fajardo, to Barcolinitia, Carolina, to Ricon. Ponce and the bioluminiscent bay near there. Spent many holidays and weekends traveling all around many different islands, and tried to hit them all. Flamanko Beach was beautiful. St. Marteen. Every island in the BVI and AVI. Loved every minute of it, but the crime made my wife want to leave.

I joined the Navy and didn't find out how much I suffered from sea sickness until I took my first cruise; by then it was too late to quit so I had to get use to eating a lot of boiled potatoes because it was the only thing that helped the nausea
