This week we had to evict some unwanted guests from the house and we also added a new tool to the shop. It was time to swap out the old PC for a new 24" iMac.

Here's how I remember which are which: Wasps build bare combs under any convenient overhang, hornets build enclosed nests in trees or in a protected area, and yellowjackets build enclosed nests in the ground (or inside walls). The only time I would ever bother considering removal of any of those nests in the spring or early summer is if it is too close to where there is regular human activity (so the one in this video definitely qualifies). The nests actually start dying out by late summer / early fall. It's actually a good thing to have them around as long as you don't get too close to the nest because they LOVE to eat mosquitoes and other flying nuisances. That 'aggression' you see when you're too close to a nest is merely a strong defense instinct, as the adults and larvae need each other to remain well-fed (the larvae are the only ones that can eat solid foods).

Neil, did you know that Dawn + Water sprayed on them will not only rid the nest of its ability to fly, but also stop them from breathing? I know it works because I used my pressure washer and foam cannon to knock a nest out on my deck that I couldn't even see. It's time to take those Wasp and Hornet killers and stop paying $5.00 per can when a little dishwashing liquid will do. This really does work and I got it from a KZbin Video that showed it does work when he found Wasps inside a utility box sitting in his backyard.

Neil, regarding the bees. I had a similar situation and I applied the spray at the exterior point where they were entering the wall. Unfortunately that drove the bees into the house due to the quantity in of bees in the wall. I immediately called a professional who used an insecticide dust literally two squirts of the dust eliminated the problem as it workes both inside and on the bees entering. I think a similar dust is available for homeowners and would highly recommend it whenever those bees are getting into the home.

After 2 years of trying to kill a nest like that. I taped a piece of cardboard under their entry hole then put Sevin dust on it. As they came in they would carry a little bit of it with them. It took a couple refills over 2 days. I have not had a problem since. FTR Sevin is not labeled for in home usage.

We had almost the same issue in the house I grew up in, but wasps & hornets were getting into the third story (Attic) and then making their way into my bedroom via the attic stairs. Mind you this was the 70's and there were a lot of insecticides available then that aren't available now. Anyhoo... It took my dad and some of his friends all weekend going around the perimeter of the roof, inside and out, closing up any holes that would allow anything other than air to flow into the attic. The house was built in 1909 so there weren't any vents, just windows, and there weren't any screens available for the windows in the attic. So Dad made individual screens for each the attic windows. Then Dad closed all of the windows and proceeded to bomb the snot out of the attic and the attic stairwell just in case. Long story short, the next weekend there were hundreds of dead wasp and hornet carcasses littering the attic floor to be swept up and discarded.

There is a point of entering inside your room. Need to find it. Bug repel spray foam with a tube. You may have to put small hole in dry wall. 2 can’s should do it. Yellow jackets can eat through dry wall. The foam will encase the nest in the wall that will stop nest from hatching. Because they will live in the walls once they got in. Hope this helps.

Hey Neil, I regularly have to serve eviction notices to wasps on our 120 year old farm house. They love building nests behind the fake plastic window shutters the previous owner installed with the siding. We always pick a nice cool morning to work on removing the wasps since the cooler temperatures slow them down a little. My dad will get them with the spray and I'll be fielding off the ones that managed to get airborne with a garden hose. Spray foam is the best solution to keeping them from returning.

I could hear bees in the wall of my bedroom at a previous house. They were getting in by a porch light hole. I cut the tip larger on an old ketchup squeeze container and filled it with Seven dust. I jammed the tip in the hole and squeezed several times. No more trouble. This house had a go cart track in the yard. I bet I could go back and still see the subtle bank created by drifting around the hair pin turn and that was 60 years ago. Last summer I had bees on a corner of an outbuilding and bald-faced wasps/hornets built a nest near the man door. They didn't bother me so I didn't bother them. This year I have a ground nest near the drive and in the corner of another building. I think the ones in the ground nest were attacking the John Deere when I mowed over them. My laptop is getting really old.😔

Neil… how did the wasps get inside? That might be something you wanna track down. My best story wasn’t me… but a bachelor buddy. I helped him pour a concrete safe in the basement of his home. He finished the basement that year but, then it got cold. So, he moved in. I went over to see him on my way home from work the day after deer season ended. He had loaded a box of special shotgun shells for me. When he opened the safe… we got swarmed with hornets. I got stung once, he got stung three times. I went and borrowed the fogger from down at work. While we were airing the walkout basement, I asked how the hornets got inside. He told me that he had found it in a tree while he was deer hunting. He cut it down and stored it in his safe. He was sure there were no hornets in it…. Until he brought it inside where the temperature was warm enough. He destroyed the nest by tossing it into his woodstove along with the bee carcasses that he swept up. After that, he gave up on having a hornet nest decorating his Man Cave. My only experience with Apple computers was a 2E in my first computer class and a Macintosh (generation 1) that I installed cattle record management software on. That was in the ‘90s. I had two external hard drive failures. Since then, I have been using solid state hard drives. I’ve found them to be quicker and no failures. I just wish they were as cheap last year as they are now! Good luck with your Apple. See ya next week!

One thing to note about SSDs is that while they can be more durable and reliable, having no moving parts, they also tend to fail without warning. I've seldom had a spinning HD fail on me without sufficient warning that I could get the data off it, while totally bricked SSDs seems to be the rule. Crystal Disk Info is your friend, just be REAL careful when downloading it, there's a bunch of bogus download links.

Oh man! What a story to open that safe to those hornets being awake! You made me think of the hornet nest I have hanging in my shop and how I'm probably lucky that I didn't have the same fate! The only thing we can tell is the wasps are getting in through our double hung windows. They were new windows when we remodeled our house in 2006 but they weren't top of the line. And since we can feel air coming in through the slides on the sides I would imagine that's how they were getting in. We stuffed some steel wool in the sides and I think that may have slowed them down now too. It's been almost 2 weeks now and haven't seen anymore. Honestly, the best thing to do is pull up the siding around the area and patch up the spot where it looks like they were trying to build a nest. I need to get some better ladders and be a little more prepared when it comes time to take all that siding apart. I plan to do that sometime. We will see how things go with a new computer. I spent time on an Apple IIe and then also a IIgs back in the '90s but I was in elementary school. I've always been tempted to buy a Mac but have put it off my entire adulthood so far. My daughters have an interest in going this route as well so if I don't like this computer I know four eager eyes ready to get their hands on it!

I think that mice and wasps can "smell," or otherwise sense, air flow coming out of a warm , or otherwise desirable, void; and then they search all around for a pathway to get to that void. The purpose of siding is really to shed water out, not to stop air flow. So my point, without criticism, Neil, is that I would have used spray foam insulation to fill the void you called, "the hole in the tarpaper" to eliminate the void and prevent air flow through the building envelope. Regards
@digdrivediy

No, you have a great point. We think that they were getting in through the double hung windows somehow. Possibly a weep hole that's meant to let water out I think could have been letting them in. We had yellow jackets between the cement foundation of our house and the black top driveway that butted right up to the house. No spray would touch them, so we took dawn dish soap and poured it in the hole, and added water at night time. Worked like a charm. I didn’t wanna keep adding chemical to the ground cause we had a ant problem in the bathroom once, and used indoor raid to kill them off, and it soaked into the wood, and the chemical smell even ruined our mattress. Couldn’t get rid of the smell at all, and ended up having to remodel the bathroom, and cut the subfloor out even to get rid of the smell. I was worried that even tho it was cement and black top that too much chemical would some how make the house stink again. 🤣 Dawn dish soap and water works wonders.

Something like Google Cloud Storage Archive Tier is only $.0012 per GB per month. It's a safe way to store your older video files encrypted to protect against things such as fire, ransomware, or theft. Had a similar yellow jacket infestation at our house. Put the shop vac right next to where they were entering and left it run till I seen no more. Would have been a little more difficult in your situation though.

Get a Synology. Whatever size you like. I'd suggest a 4-6 bay one. That will also give you the option to expand it as your KZbin library expands. :) The setup and use of the Synology platform is very simple and user friendly.

Oh no, not the dreaded annual gutter clean out. I want to see you off that ladder. You need to figure out a long tube, high pressure blower apparatus that can be worked with your feet on the ground for those gutters. Never used 🍏, too much 💰. But they say they're the best for video and music production. 👏

They make all in ones like that that are windows based. I'm curious to see if/how much your editing slows down. They are less powerful generally because they don't have the cooling ability and tend to use laptop components. For holes that can lead to ingress my typical go to is using copper mesh and spray foaming it in place. If needed you can put some type of plastic to use as a vapor barrier on top of it after it set and off gassed.

If you want to complete your work and not work on the computer a Mac is a great choice. I switched to Macs in my recording studio years ago because I was tired of fighting PC software, driver, and interface issues. The Macs are quite an investment but they are trouble free and run forever.

I had ants that somehow got in and were crawling on a window. If you open the window, most will have drain/weep holes on the sides in the window channel which I'll give a good spray when doing my usual bug spraying. Never had any problems since. I also hope you patched that hole in your moisture barrier!

I would highly recommend a NAS, but that’s probably because it’s my day job though on a much larger scale. For simplicity I would suggest Synology. They are the Apple of data storage. If you would like to build your own, I would look at truenas. A new motherboard, a few drives and you could probably repurpose your old pc parts. I will mention the adage when it comes to copies of data for backups. 1 is none, 2 is 1, and 3 is good. So what ever you decide, you should probably at least double it and put one in the house and 1 in the shop replicating all important data. If you can get offsite that’s even better.
@digdrivediy

That is great advice. I'm slowly learning what I need to do. It's tough when I've haven't made this part of my life in the past, but I certainly recognize the importance. We have redundancy at work but it comes with a big price tag. It's harder to swallow for this hobby stuff...

We're getting there. To be honest I was hoping that I'd adapt more quickly to the OS, but it is just enough different than a PC that I have to walk before I run. But I can't get over how quiet and quick this is was such a smaller machine. It's been a welcome change and I look forward to getting it all figured out.

I think you will like the upgrade. I say upgrade because the M1 is so fast and quiet. I bought the M1Pro MBP 4TB SSD last year and it's so fast. The larger SSD allow me to take my project with me in FCPx. There is one thing that has saved me a lot of space--Handbrake. I run my videos through that before they go in to any projects and the space saved is like making the storage 4-10x larger. I really don't see much compression problems at all. Here is the video if interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKeToIued56Gha8 If you have any questions on the Mac, I should be able to help. Just remember all the stuff dennis meisle taught us :) (which was why I may have hated macs for so long...). Take care!
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy Жыл бұрын
Thanks Bryce! I will definitely check out the video. I do need to try to conserve space and get some kind of storage solution figured out soon. I've been dragging my feet and wanting to be playing with a Mac for quite some time now. I I thought this would be a good way to get my feet wet and see if I like it and then if I need to upgrade I'm willing to do it again. My girls are shopping at the bit for aid desktop PC in the house so this could go their way if I decide to go for more horsepower down the road. My biggest trouble right now is using finder. It is just so much different than Windows file explorer and I have trouble feeling efficient at it. It's getting better a little bit at a time but when you've been using something for what, nearly 30 years now then I guess, it's hard to just switch all at once. All I can say is though I am certainly impressed with what this machine can do in its size and lack of fan noise! Now my Android phone is feeling threatened...
@PeaceIntheValley
@PeaceIntheValley Жыл бұрын
@@digdrivediy The finder is certainly different and there are many functions that I absolutely love - like tabs for each window (command and click the folder name). Anther is if you are in an application save/open window and you already have the folder open in finder you can just drag that folder onto the open/save window of the app, and it will autmatically go there without having to find that each time you want to go to another folder llocation. Snazzy Labs has a lot of Mac tips that seem to me as the best out there. Good luck! Call or email anything!

I switched to Mac in 2011 and have never looked back. Once you get past the small differences in the OS, it is smooth sailing. I also like that it integrates perfectly with my iPhone, iPad etc. I used to build all my PCs, and enjoy that tinkering, but the Mac keeps me on the straight and narrow from messing something up with a “tweak”. Bonus is the hardware seemingly lasts forever. I have a 2012 Mac mini that I still use, just upgraded the hard drive to an ssd and it runs like the day I bought it. Try that with Windows.
