The future Nick describes already exists - Shimano Alfine 11spd Di2. With Gates belt drive makes for an awesome low maintenance set up on my road/commuting bike. Rear wheel is a bit on the heavy side, but that's the only negative.

Heavy and not terribly efficient (Alfine is decent, but all geared hubs seem to be just slightly worse than casettes). But almost 0 maintenance rules, it's great for the everyday bike.
@FurySpyder
@FurySpyder Жыл бұрын
@@Finnspin_unicycles tiny bit less efficient than a derailleur system working in perfect order, but not so you'd notice when pedalling. For low maintenance commuter or touring it's awesome! Overall weight is about the same as a 'typical' derailleur system, it's just concentrated more at the back wheel.

Great video. The electronic shifting and internal gearing is moving much faster into production on the e-bikes where you're pushing 400-600 watts through the drivetrain continuously and there's more wear from heavier loads.

900g+ weight penalty? That doesn’t negate the weight of a front mech / chainring etc at all. You’re adding about half a kilo in comparison. The only advantage is an aero one, but then that’s probably negated by the whopping thru axle lever… it’s fancy tech, but that’s all.
@nicvieri2627
@nicvieri2627 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, that’s compared to my Zipp 353’s with a 10-33 SRAM Red cassette and Michelin tyres. So probably about 300-500g lighter than most other wheelsets out there. But yes, it’s still a heavy system. I’m sure with the new investment and other wheel manufacturers like Enve they’ll be able to shave some of it off.

Give that a Super Nice in GCN Tech parlance and I do appreciate a unique build or at least one which is ahead of the curve as surely this will become a popular template. And thanks for showing us that Classified hub and how its innards easily slip into an otherwise standard hub, cool. Not a fan of campus bikes and their one lame ring, but this I could see, sort of like modern Sturmey-Archer and Euro to boot, what's not to like about that. Thanks again and I like this new team format and all those Park Tools, Y'all can get stuff done with those. 😀

Very nice bike. The classified hub is very interesting and I think things will move internal over time as long as they can get the drag down on the system to a point where the loss of drag is made up for by the loss of aero drag. No pro is going to run a system that costs them watts and if pros don’t run it people won’t buy it despite most people’s needs and a pros needs being basically the opposite of each other.

Sweet bike. And yea… internal gear hubs do kinda rock. I’m personally a fan of them. I’ve got an 11spd hub on my gravel bike, and frankly love it. Is it the lightest? Nope, but hella resilient. Gates belt too… aka, so little maintenance it’s lovely. Classified seems to be more or less going that direction. But am sure Rohloff, Shimano/Sturmey Archer will go electric shifting soon enough. The tech is there to do so.

Does not make sense, what problem does it solve? Basically they replace a simple front derailleur with a far more complicated set-up and there is no way that it would be more efficient. It essentially forces you to cross chain and that is always less efficient and then there must be additional drag in the planetary gears.

Not trying to take sides but sure sounds like a lot of armchair engineers and cycling experts here. Sure, it's probably not the lightest, or cheapest. Who knows exactly how efficient it is. Some like front derailleurs, others don't. How about anyone here stack up the bike they've wanted for years and we'll go over it from the comfort of the internet and let you know exactly what we think of it. Nic stated he's wanted this frameset and has a nifty new wheelset to try out. So be it, and happy new bike day for him! What you could all be positive about is the potential for a field review or cost break down at some point in the future, because that could be useful info. More useful than most of the commenters who seem to know the future or how cycling should be whining about how wrong this bike is. Looks cool, would like a ride report. As you were.

Love your videos, but the Classified hubs are a solution to a non-existent problem. What's the problem with front derailleurs? Either you go full internal hub gears (+ belt drive) and then you have a heavier but almost maintenance free setup, or you just stick with the regular 1X or 2X chain drive setup. Having internal gears AND a rear derailleur has almost all of the disadvantages of both systems with almost none of the pros.
@nicvieri2627
@nicvieri2627 Жыл бұрын
I think the biggest advantage would be in the TT sector. Most of those guys are opting for chainrings up to 60t to maintain their chain line. Downside is climbing slight hills then without the small ring. Definitely very niche though. Will have to see how durable it is over time. Gonna be smashing it around for this year to properly test it.
