The new generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV looks set to keep the Triple Diamond brand well ahead of the pack, continuing the model’s long standing, top selling SUV in segment status. Mitsubishi has extended the electric range of the PHEV out to 84km through improvements to both the front and rear electric motors and an enhanced and larger battery, all of which contributes to a very composed and assured drive experience.
Outlander PHEV now offers seating for five or seven, with flat folding seat capability to give a cavernous boot space when only five seats are required. Front seats have also seen an upgrade with heating, 8-way adjustment and memory positioning for both driver and passenger. The PHEV’s conventional 2.4-litre petrol engine and fuel tank have also seen significant upgrades, increasing the combined EV and ICE range to around 750kms - no range anxiety here! - with a Mitsubishi-posted fuel consumption figure of 1.6 litres per 100km.

No doubt the reviewer is a nice guy however these reviews are all very polite and lack any proper balanced criticisms….more like an ad. It’s a shame we don’t have a descent review channel in NZ like some of the Australian channels. For potential buyer consideration I’ve driven one of these and would rate it as an ideal step up for for a family however my personal criticisms are the ride and suspension is too soft and disengaged with some sharp feedback on occasions.The rear seats when folded should lock in place as without any load on top of them they can thud up and down over certain bumps. The engine being Mitsubishi is a definite plus over the 2.5 Nissan unit in the standard petrol units however unless you keep the battery pack charged you will find running it as a standard hybrid and open road quite thirsty, reports of Phev Eclipe’s returning well into the 8’s per 100km are about so I’d only expect this to be worse so what is the real world economy then?…food for thought. Also if you search google you will read of issues relating to what some deal as unreasonable bonnet flutter under windy conditions and speed, I believe Mitsubishi may be trying to remediate some examples using additional rubber trimmings attached to the underside edges of the bonnet with I noticed on an example I drove…..not a pretty sight. Great looking vehicle and well finished….with great warranty, I personally however was left disappointed from my experience so just offering it for consideration to all.

Yes, definitely as ad vs a review. Question for you... did you check out the third row? I saw on another review that it looked like the third row only had foot/ankle room for small children. Looked like a tween/teen and definitely an adult wouldn't even be able to get their foot in the space. Is that true?

I have the 2018 version and I'm around 8 to 10 litres/100 kms with EV all empty. 8 to 12 km/100 l if I save the battery for 2 hours of high way battery so I can use the EV to power all my camping for days in EV mode when parked at camping spot. Sometimes if it makes sense, I'll drive in either EV or "normal" (mix of EV and Gas) so that I don't save the battery for the duration of the drive. I'll then charge the battery with about an hour left towards my destination and sometimes depending on the Terrain etc, it is more fuel efficient to charge up the battery vs saving the battery in save mode.

I own a 2020 Outlander PHEV and am salivating over this new one, but I absolutely love the paddle shifters for the regenerative braking, and didn't see them in this new model. I sure hope there's some on the steering wheel. It allows you to coast down a hill the speed of your choice without having your foot on the brake. I believe it's a must for any EV and would put me off a Tesla.

I noticed that you can still coast down the hill in my 2019 even without setting it to B0. Just need to release the acceleration pedal enough to keep the vehicle right in between regeneration and acceleration. I used to switch back and forth from B0 to B5 and everything in-between until I realized I can do the same thing leaving it in D and adjusting pressure to the acceleration and break pedals.
@DR-ev2ft
@DR-ev2ft 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it has the paddles. However the new release Outlander PHEV 2022 has a major fail in the Regen braking system. The settings B1 to B5 are available via the steering wheel paddles, BUT, if the battery is above 55% charge, the system STARTS THE PETROL ENGINE to provide braking force rather than returning power to the battery. Brilliant Regenerative Braking. NOT. What genius thought that was a good idea. MAJOR FAIL MITSUBISHI. How to ruin a good car. Buyer beware. Stick to the old 2021 model until Mitsubishi fix this major failure. Show less

Didn't even show us the third row!! I really need to see it in order to decide if I go with that model or not. Another review I watched showed that the foot/ankle room was only enough for small children. Does the second and/or third row slide?

Hey Ian! I actually work at a Mitsubishi dealership and for the 22 Outlander the third row is quite a bit smaller than other 7 passenger suvs on the market but the 2nd row does slide to add my leg room for the back passengers! Not sure on the 23 PHEV redesign and if they added more cargo space or room but just thought I would help out with your question!

We've had ours about 6 weeks now, and have driven that same road up to Omaha several times. Door to door we can do 60kms without the petrol engine kicking in, but at that point we are on zero remaining range so I don't think it would go much further. The road does include 100 km/h highway speed and one serious hill, and we were fully loaded with kids for the weekend though.

When you're driving with cruise control on it doesn't kick you out of EV mode does it? Like the previous model does?
@ianwish5738
@ianwish5738 2 жыл бұрын
I had a 2018 and now have a 2022. Both (and I'm assuming the new one) would kick you out of EV mode... but only "technically". The car would still use electricity first and only kick the engine on once you had run out of juice, pushed the "Save" or "Charge" buttons or slammed the throttle. I've found that since this vehicle wants to be an EV first, pushing the EV button is really only needed in order to turn off "Save" or "Charge". I've done many, many trips in both the 2018 and 2022 with cruise on and using only electricity.

Sorry last question . I noticed most newer phevs have at least a 6.6kw onboard charger capable of charging on level 2 in under 4 hours most are around 2.5 hours. Does the 2022 outlander phev have the onboard charger upgraded or will it still take 7.5 hours to charge on level 2 /220 volts?
@DR-ev2ft
@DR-ev2ft 2 жыл бұрын
I do a 74km round trip to work including a 320m hill (brake pedal to get regen on way down as the paddles are useless above 60% charge) and some 80 to 100km roads. I can do that on a charge if I dont use electric heater too much. It is hungry at about 3kw capacity so heater sucks quite a bit of distance. Charger is set at 10amps so normal plug. Takes about 9.5 hrs from flat and adds 18.3kwh. So system reserves about 1.5kwh for hybrid operation.
