This was such a wonderful look into the lives of the Romani people. You were so gracious and warm, and they were so kind to let you film them and to welcome you into their homes. @@FromRustToRoadtrip Thank you. I've been interested in the Gypsies/Romani peoples for awhile. They seem a vastly under-appreciated people. I once watched a great video on a village in Northern Romania, but I haven't been able to find it in a few years, as I've switched computers a couple times since then. I keep looking for it though. The kids are precious. I honestly don't understand the darkness in the hearts of millionaires and billionaires who have too much money for them to ever spend in a lifetime, but there are still starving impoverished people on earth. The Western nations especially kind of disgust me. They have enough resources to help the world a million times over, but they just use it to acquire MORE. Not to help anyone else.

Classy. Well done. Clearly well considered, planned and executed. You've put a lot of effort in and it shows. You raise profound questions; not least whether grinding poverty, alcoholism and desperation are actually aspects of a culture, and if they are, whether it is a culture which should be preserved. Is the EU, by paying your host and seeking to preserve this 'culture', merely complicit in perpetuating poverty?
@FromRustToRoadtrip4 жыл бұрын
I think the issues we encountered were unfortunate by-products of systematic racism and intolerance over thousands of years. From what we saw there these villagers have few opportunities within the wider community and in fact were too afraid to even leave the village at night in fear of attack. It’s so sad to witness the children for example, each age group we encountered would be a little more wore down than the previous. Youngsters running around playing without any idea of the prejudice they will later face in life. Teens looking significantly less happy and motivated as they realise what faces them outside the village. Young adults desperately trying anything possible to survive and forge out a life. Alcoholism and drug abuse are unfortunate consequences of having little opportunity or self-respect where you’re told you’re worthless, you’re dirty, you’re a thief etc. We find away from these negative aspects though, a culture rich with tradition and song and dance and hospitality that is almost unparalleled. In Kosovo there are real positive changes within Roma communities and proves the strength and capabilities of Romani people. We do wonder if the EU are really helping at all though in villages such as these. They seem to be happy to throw money at issues with no accountability for where or how it’s spent and that can be so much more dangerous for the communities than not receiving the money at all

@@FromRustToRoadtrip Thank you for your thoughtful response. I'm sure your other viewers find it illuminating, too. Bigotry is always disgusting, but the problem is how to deal with it. It's easy to exacerbate. You have got under the skin of this particular problem and, although you can't solve it, you have shed light, and light is a profound disinfectant. People are tribal and there is always a tension between the individual and the tribe. Respect for the individual (and you demonstrate yours) is essential to civilisation because it mitigates against the worst manifestations of tribal behaviour. I think that, overall, things are getting gradually better for humanity, and you are both doing your little bit to help that progress. By the way, I started my career as a designer for BBCtv, so I know production values when I see them. Hats off!

Why are they called Roma/Romani if they are considered to be of Indian descent? You’d think that would mean Romanian.
@FromRustToRoadtrip2 жыл бұрын
The similarities between the names are purely coincidental, the origin of the name Roma is thought to originate from Sanskrit denoting people of a lower caste, whereas the country name Romania originally meant “from Rome” to denote their Latin roots

@@FromRustToRoadtrip thats not true about lower cast . Thats a presumption made on observation .

That’s not what Wikipedia says. All of the theories on the origin on the name and their history are conjecture because there is no official written history of them

Another mint vlog! Its a bit of an eye opener seeing the Roma villages and rural Romania in general almost at third world standards of deprivation. And this in an EU country! Glad your old van is holding up and you are managing to travel about without getting hassled or stuck. Unlike another YT vanlifer currently touring eastern Europe who gets struck every other vlog and bailed out by the locals!

Yeah it was a huge eye opener for us! Very little help seems to be reaching the most vulnerable here. I wish we could have done more to help but it’s an extremely complicated issue for these folk. Haha yeah it’s not let us down at all yet! We did have some dodgy fuel recently that kept us off the road for a few days but other than she’s been sweet! We’ve done all kinds of crazy snow and ice driving (vlogs coming soon) and it’s still going strong 💪

😂 so do you think rural Romania is roma villages 😱 why you not speak about hospitality of roma people. Where an English will treat you like that. What is wrong with you!!! Go more deep than your eyes can see. Seriously?? They treat you as a guest maybe they don’t have what to eat and they put your food in front of you, just make you to feel good, and you disrespect them just because you come from a developed country. This it called discrimination! 😡
@blackdogwildtrails31233 жыл бұрын
@@Happy_me_journals The hospitality is self evident. No comment needed. I was commenting on the poverty of the Roma people which I guess stems from an apartheid system in Romania which discriminates against the Roma people.That's the fault of your government.Not the people who are the victims .
