The elimination of Daniel Bryan in the 2015 Royal Rumble wasn't to set up an "avenger" story. It was literally WWE management, namely Vince McMahon, deliberately spitting in the face of his own audience. Immediately after Bryan's elimination. the wrestler Golddust entered the match. Golddust's intro video that plays on screen as he makes his entrance starts with the words "Shattered Dreams". So imagine seeing that, in order. Bryan, the chosen champion of the people, is eliminated. A few seconds pass. The words "Shattered Dreams" appear in giant golden letters. It was intentional.

True, but it was also WWE having just enough sense to know that if Roman had eliminated Bryan, it would have been even worse. They thought the crowd would get their booing out before Reigns entered. And boy were they wrong.

They then further spit in the fans faces by proceeding to eliminate everyone else the audience cared about in the worst possible way. Easily, by two way past their prime performers. And yes people were boiling mad. Their streaming service lost 300,000 subscribers and the crowd rioted after, preventing the performers from leaving

Vince McMahon's WWE in the 2010's was so needlessly combative with its own audience that even the telecoms industry was like "Christ, guys, tone it down a bit". No wonder people thought AEW was a good idea at the time.

42:20 No, that's a legitimate wellness policy and a legitimate violation. WWE for the most part takes drug use very seriously due to the numerous wrestlers who have died young deaths because of their history of drug abuse. It's not perfect, and sometimes they bend the rules/show favouritism to certain wrestlers, but it's a real thing. EDIT: in particular, WWE overhauled their wellness policy after the tragic death of Eddie Guerrero and the horrific murder-suicide of Chris Benoit and his wife and son.

~45:00 As good as the video is, SEW deeply undersells how much fans hated Roman for being the one who ended up (mostly) retiring The Undertaker. The very next promo Reigns did had him go out into the ring to give what was supposed to be like a minute long speech. For the next twenty minutes the crowd just relentlessly shut him down with boos whenever he tried to open his mouth. There were multiple "Roman Sucks!" and "Go Away!" chants. It was seriously one of the most brutal acts of pillorying that's been done since Medieval times.

The skillset to be a proper jobber is actually so elevated that in my opinion can rival or even outstand a normal face or heel. As a jobber, your job is to actively get your shit rocked for sometimes fifteen to thirty minutes per match. Not only you *need* to get hit, but you need to be constantly manhandled, sometimes by stars that aren't at all experts and can actively injure you by accident.

What's sad is that the fans were asking WWE to turn Roman heel since the beginning of his rejection. We all knew he had some talent and he was legitimately improving, but having him win all the time without "paying his dues", jumping straight to the main event without being a midcarder and also beating beloved and more talented wrestlers didn't help his character at all. Vince was really out of touch back then. And it's weird because guys like Cena and Rock had to turn heels to win over the crowd, because as babyface initially they lacked charisma and were bland, the same issue Roman had. But Vince refused to turn him back heel. They could've done a lot of things different, like having him recreate The Shield with new guys, experimenting with his promos, this time as a heel, make him obsessed about the past (since he didn't change his theme song and ring gear for years after The Shield broke up) and getting betrayed again by his new partners (alluding to Seth betraying him in the past). There were a lot of stories to explore where they could slowly transition him from the quiet strong guy into a loud mouthed antihero and eventually into a full on babyface. He was decent on the mic whenever they didn't script his promo, the main reason he had this enormous rejection was it how was handled. All I can say about that is I'm glad Vince McMahon is not on WWE anymore.

53:44 That's right you should feel bad for Roman but I can make it even sadder with context Roman was not only failing at his profession, but he was also failing at the family businesses, he is Joe Anoa'i from Anoa'i royal wrestling family. Most of his family has been incredibly successful, the Supereyepatchwolf has mentioned The Rock and The Usos but there is many more examples, the Anoa'i family has been part of the WWE since the late 70´s and most of the members have been extremely successful. They are so respected that another wrestler, who is also part of a wrestling family, starts his entrance song with the quote of ``Wrestling has more than one royal family´´ that's how respected they are. Roman have been pushed by WWE in a way that the Anoa'i family hadn't seen since the days of the Rock and he is failing. This is a man who initially rejected the family business and tried to play football and failed, he then came back to the family business and was also successful in a group until he had to stand by himself. So imagine Roman alone trying to make it work with the pressure from the rest of the family, pressure from the company that had put their hopes on him, pressure from the fans who hate him and want the other members of his group to be the face instead, pressure to not fail again, he tries and tries, he works his ass off to become as good as he can be. And its not enough. And a little spoiler for the next video so you watch it faster. It gets worse before it gets better

To further emphasize what it was like watching Roman matches at this time, here’s an anecdote from a match I recently rewatched: It’s Summerslam 2017 and the main event is a four way match between Brock Lesnar, Samoa Joe, Braun Strowman, and Roman Reigns. Strowman and Joe enter first and because the fans know that Roman is entering next because the champion enters last, they start booing before Roman’s music even starts. The boos only get louder when Roman’s entrance starts. One of the commentators mentions that Roman was voted 2016’s “Most Hated Wrestler” in PWI (a wrestling newsletter). He is quickly corrected by the other commentator, who says that Roman isn’t hated, he’s “controversial”, meanwhile every fan in the building over the age of 12 is booing Reigns like he kicked each and every one of their dogs.

You seem to have misunderstood something crucial. You don't have to lift the person's leg for a pin. All you really need to do is put a part of yourself over their body to signal to the ref that you're "pinning" them. They break the pin if they get their shoulder up, or otherwise get the part of you that's ON them, off. So, technically, it's even perfectly legal to put a single finger on someone's chest, and have it be considered a pin that the ref has to count for. To my knowledge, no one has ever gotten that ridiculous, but there are people who pin there opponents just by putting their foot down on their chest and nothing else. Also, that Backstage Lesnar moment really does put into perspective more than anything else how ridiculous the nonsensical hate towards Roman was at that point. When you have someone like Brock Lesnar getting pissed about the shit you're going through and how bullshit it is management isn't the one getting it instead? To the point he just decides to piece out? Yeah, ya done fucked up.

As someone who lived through this I remember being at a show with my friends and one of them said that she was beginning to feel bad at the level of boos Roman was getting. I responded that as the audience in the crowd of a theater in the round we were a part of the presentation and as such we had an obligation to the performance to express ourselves, and as people who recognized, because we all did, that the problem was not the person but the character being presented the more we rejected Roman the sooner the experiment could end and the sooner Joe, the person behind the character, would get the chance at something better suited to him. We had to kill Roman to save Joe...and we proceeded to boo the ever loving crap out of him. Having said that, and knowing where both Joe and Roman end up, while the path is painful the results are God Damn beautiful. Redemption is coming...just after more pain.

The great thing about The Rock's facial expression at the Rumble is because he is extremely good at reading and reacting to a crowd. He would never just completely ignore their reaction to him and look happy even though the crowd were booing (though he himself had to go with a short lived terrible Babyface gimmick when he started that everyone hated). What a lot of people consider to be one of the greatest matches of all time was back in 2002, his WrestleMania match against Hollywood (Hulk) Hogan, at a time Rock was at his absolute top Babyface run. It was the first match Hulk Hogan had wrestled in WWE for a decade and going in was meant to be a despised heel, but the audience was having NONE of that! Straight away it was clear to both Rock and Hogan that the crowd was HUGELY in Hogan's favour, so they switched it on the fly and Rock went into full heel mode, and Hogan - Babyface. I recommend checking the match out, JUST for the crowd reaction! Both Rock and Hogan definitely made the right decision!

Hey Veggie, love your reactions btw. But yeah, a big mistake a lot of bookers/promoters make is refusing to accept that while they put forward angles and gimmicks it is the AUDIENCE that ultimately decides who is face and who is heel (and who goes over.) With The Heist of The Century and a lesson with the Money in the Bank briefcase. Money in the Bank is a concept where someone wins this ladder match against a bunch of others, that briefcase lets you get a shot at any title you want at anytime as long as you have a referee around. It’s used to hot shot people to the main event scene or as a way to change the course of the title whenever needed which was used here. It’s usually used at the end of a match after someone has been defeated but when Seth Rollins cashed in during the middle of the match it turned the match into a triple threat so 1v1v1. Rollins took his shot, took advantage of a beaten Roman to steal the title away from the man he turned his back on

The reason I assumed they did not give Roman a manager character was that they wanted to portray him as the hero. If he is the hero he can't be silent or intimidating and needs to be ultra likable to young audiences. A manager works best if they are promoting a villain or a Duo as they work as a hype man. If you are not just A Face but THE FACE of the company you have to stand on your own and I always assumed they basically thought that Roman would get better within a handful of matches but by the time he was 2 years in it was clear he was still shy and anxious when talking on the mic

The company has no reason to allow him back in and has expressed that there is no future for him within the company. Hes also been selling more and more of his stock. The company is actively attempting to get him to sell the final small portion he has to fully wash their hands of him. One of the worst tragedies of WWE's mismanagement of Roman was that they actually had a convincing reason to course-correct before that Royal Rumble. Roman had been out from September to November with an intestinal hernia. This is time both WWE and Roman could have used to improve and get him over, but was lost due to an emergency. This was the perfect time to hit the brakes, seeing as the injury cut their build up for him off at the knees. But no, they stuck to the plan they'd made the second the Shield broke up. And everyone suffered for it.

He barely even talked about the absolute INSANE backlash Roman had from beating the Undertaker on the next RAW. It was the most explosive nuclear heat (negative crowd reaction) in wwe history, everyone in that crowd HATED him and wouldn’t let him talk for 20 minutes while he stood there in the ring trying to deliver a promo.

There are a number of wrestlers that suffer early on with their character. Both Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes had really good starts with a group and when they went single, it just deflated. Now they are the top of the game and had to be remade into diamonds. Roman had to endure and turn heal while Cody had to leave and rebuild himself from the ground up.

Lifelong wrestling fan and obsessed know it all here. So the oily hair in most cases is leave in conditioner to keep their hair from getting frizzy. A ladder match is a match with a retrievable object over the ring with the objective of climbing a ladder and recovering it. Wrestlers are independent contractors and OSHA doesn't care what stupidity they do to themselves Daniel Bryan's neck injury was pretty bad and I believe related to concussions but he rehabbed it. He retired again then unretired and is currently still a pro wrestler. Many wrestlers do come back from legit neck breaks. RoH is Ring of Honor, which was once an independent wrestling organization that has a pretty significant history. The Royal Rumble is a 30 man match where you lose by being thrown over the top rope The Play button was part of the Wrestlemania set for the year, not sure why they went with it, but they did. When Seth interrupted the match, he made it a triple threat match, which means it now is 3 people, first to get a pin or submission wins, previous match essentially ceased to exist.

The money in the bank briefcase can add someone to a match or create new matches. It’s a pretty usual strategy. Have the champion fight a match then cash in right afterwards while they’re tired. At ‘Mania 31, what happens though is the match between Brock and Roman is turned into a triple threat meaning that Brock does not have to be pinned to lose the title.

I always feel bad watching this video, this was pretty much the only time in my life that I actively followed the WWE storyline, and I was one of those asses in the audience constantly complaining about Roman. Obviously Joe didn't deserve all the hate he got because of the fans not being happy with the story, and I'm glad the audience got behind him eventually.

It's such a weird situation in that period of time... Roman was improving not deserving that amount of hate while simultaneously the crowd not rightfully owing to the WWE to like him because of the forced narative at the expense of the people who they were invested into. The people having decided on that narrative at all cost and not course correcting should be held up in place of Roman getting shouted at by the crowd. The crowd got an awful spetacle and Roman just got stuck into a horrid situation because of the WWE's shortsightedness.

Do you want another reason to feel bad for roman/know why people hated his push/hate vince mcmahon?? at some point during his big hero roman reigns experiment they had him use blue colored contact to "make him look more like a hero"(not actual quote but the sentiment behind the action) is that kinda racist? You could argue it since it attributes hero-ness to blue-eyed people;and ANY decision at this time had to go trough vince mcmahon so it makes you think... and its one of the reasons fans felt it all was really artificial Edit: for proof look up roman reigns eye color blue

5:16 Ring of Honour or "ROH" for short, is a lesser known but highly respected promotion that got it's start in the early 2000's, while WWE focused on big campy characters, ROH distinguished itself with a focus on in ring action itself as the draw. To this day, it's major wrestlers have become a "who's who" in the wrestling pantheon. 7:28 They use wooden ladders with metalic paint for when they want a spot where a wrestler breaks a ladder. 9:38 It also helped that it still worked and was sold IN character as these two old friends, now bitter enemies finally reconciling and saying goodbye to each other. 11:00 See, Reigns wasn't a bad performer. He was bad at the character they were trying to make him into at the time. It's like they hired Kane Hodder (Famous Jason Vorhees actor) and told him to play the role of Starlord. Roman was good at playing this invincible engine of destruction that spoke little and destroyed his opponents in seconds. People liked that, but he hadn't been taught in playing the role of the smiling, happy go lucky underdog in peril when the WWE tried to present him as such. What's funny is that for a brief few months in 2015, they went BACK to portraying Roman as the no-nonsense killer of men and fans LOVED it... only for them to then make every other wrestler feel unimportant next to the almighty Reigns, which the fans immediately resented and started hating Roman again. So they HAD the fans love of him for a few months by fixing their biggest issue in his writing, then almost immediately lost it by introducing a brand NEW problem. 13:48 WWE actually helped to popularise the Ladder match and most of the iconic examples come from the Big E itself. The general concept is a belt or other item is hung above the ring. First wrestler to climb a ladder and retrieve the item wins the match. WWE even introduced a very popular version of it called "Money in the Bank" that has become an annual tradition. It is a six person free for all ladder match where the prize is a briefcase containing a contract that can be cashed in for a match at ANY time. Now hold on. You might have misheard me. You MIGHT think I said: "During any show" I said: At. ANY. Time. The first ever "Mr. Money in the Bank" Edge won the WWE world title by cashing in his briefcase IMMEDIATELY after then WWE Champion John Cena had just fought six other wrestlers in the brutal Elimination Chamber (Another violent free for all match), meaning that John was bloodied, bruised and could barely stand, leaving him easy pickings for the fresh as a daisy Edge. 18:21 Tell that to Kurt Angle, a wrestling Legend who, in real life, (Look it up) won an honest to God, no bullshit, OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL "WITH A BROKEN, FREAKIN' NECK!!" 18:39 Here's what makes this even more incredibly stupid: The story, at the time, was that Daniel Bryan was being bullied by the (In Kayfabe) Authority for not being a "Marketable" champion, and they had sent their henchmen to attack him and cause his injury. Forcing him to surrender the title without actually being beating for it. So his quest to win back the belt that he never actually lost is the story that has the most emotional resonance, while Roman at the time has no actual story connecting him to the world title besides "It would be cool to win it." Imagine if, at the climax of Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker got randomly shot by a stormtrooper in the stomach. Said "Forget Vader, I'm going home" and instead Chewbaccas goes to fight Darth Vader because Lucas is a big Chewbacca fan. That is what happened with Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns. 22:22 Oh, you'll LOVE this. For basically all of 2016-2018, the Vince kept trying to justify the EXTREMELY negative reactions to Roman Reigns with: "Well, it's not apathy. Therefore it's exactly what I want and I'm doing a great job!" 25:37 That's not a storyline. His cousin REALLY. IS. THE ROCK. 27:49 No, Ivan Drago is a good comparison. 28:41 Yeah, He broke the Undertaker's wrestlemania streak in what was, sadly, a lackluster match after a string of insanely good ones. Brock isn't a bad performer in the slightest, but a combination of old age and Undertaker getting a concussion lead to the legendary streak ending in a trombone sound of a match. 29:35 That tape is a real life injury that he is wrestling with. They use surgical tape to protect the wounded area as much as possible during the match. 34:53 Remember when I said "At ANY time" Seth cashed in in the middle of their match, making it a Triple Threat where the first man to pin someone, ANYONE would win the match and the title. Roman and Brock were already tired, Seth just had to wait till one hit the other, take out the remaining man and boom. He's champion. 43:09 They wanted the Roman Reigns match to be Taker's last, but it was a terrible match through no fault of Roman's. Taker was in his 50's and could barely move by that point. And it started a horrible string of years where Take would go: "I want to retire on this match." Then the match would be awful because he was a man in his 50's, so he'd say: "Okay, THAT sucked. I can't end my career on that. ONE more match." and the next one would be even worse, so he'd say: "Okay, ONE more match..." and it got worse and worse and worse. 44:55 Now, to be fair, there ARE wrestlers like Minoru Suzuki who can wrestle in their 50's and have FANTASTIC matches as recently as 2021. But Minoru wrestles a style that is focused on strikes and submissions which isn't very physically intensive. Meanwhile, Taker's style is all about big, powerful, athletic moves. For a 300lb man, in his 50's.
