The first one is actually very interesting in terms of how it became a huge hit. Was made for $15,000, was picked up by Paramount and then ended up making $193 million worldwide, making it the most profitable film of all time. I've not seen the sequels but I respect the hell out of the first one for that reason alone.
@MrSignman652 жыл бұрын
To be fair, it's a very cool idea. Found footage is automatically spooky because of the more "realistic" aspect, and the effect could be recreated with very little investment. The execution was mediocre, but I feel people go into it expecting it to be shitty because the sequels were, thus bringing it down rather than viewing it objectively as a really neat, if cheesy, indie horror film with a remarkable success story.

A quick summary of the series story: Katie and Christie's grandmother was part of a cult that worships the Toby demon and she (their grandmother) sold their first born son in their bloodline to Toby in exchange for wealth. Which is why they can all afford to live in such nice ass houses. She also "married" Christie to the demon (which is why she is dressing Christie up in the veil and says "doesn't she make such a nice bride?") - so when Christie has her first born son, the first son in their bloodline, the baby Hunter, the baby technically belongs to Toby. And this is when the strange ghost stuff starts happening in their house. The maid says the demon can be "passed" to a blood family member - aka Katie, and this is when the events of the first movie take place. But the demon still needs to collect on the pact, which is why possessed Katie breaks in to kidnap the baby. Sometime after that, Katie is apprehended? And because baby Hunter has no parents, he was put up for adoption and ended up with the family from the fourth movie. The blond kid (Odd Robbie) is a different kid Katie kidnapped from a DIFFERENT family off screen. That kid is Hunter, and the fourth film is all about Katie coming to get him back to bring to Toby to fulfill the demon's pack because he is the blood related son

@tenpintsofsundrop Жыл бұрын
@@D44RK_Iced_Yogs as far as I know, the Mexican family fits in because someone in their apartment complex was also part of that cult that the Grandma was a part of. There's a section in the movie where they spy into the next apartment and one day it's an old, wrinkled grandma, and the next day, it's a gorgeous, hot woman - she was sacrificing young virgins to gain back a youthful body. And the teens with their camera went to investigate the crime scene and they took an object from the apartment and accidentally took the curse with them, and they accidentally opened a portal to the older films, because the Toby demon was sacrificing their souls to give the cult power - the last scene of the film is Katy consuming their flesh because Toby guided them through a portal so she could consume their flesh for power And I believe the film is called "The Marked Ones" because the woman who lived in their apartment complex marked them as targets for sacrifice

I did not realize ice makers were mainly an American thing. They are a separate section of the freezer, which you connect to the water mains in your house and it just constantly makes ice. They can get very noisy when they empty the ice from the tray. They are mainly used in fridges that have a water dispenser in the door, so it can also dispense ice whenever you want some. They normally also come with a setting to crush the ice upon dispensing. The shapes and sizes of the ice created can vary quite a lot between models as well.

Not that it literally matters but the frog "diffuser" in that kid's room is a humidifier. I reckon they don't have them in the UK because it rains so much there, but there are a lot of states in the US that are too dry for it to be healthy, and so people put out humidifiers to increase the humidity (and people put them in kids rooms to help them when they get sick).

No, we have them as well. Some parts of the UK are quite dry and even in parts that arent, the inside of a decent house will be dry in winter due to a combination of the freezing temperature sucking the water out of the air and the central heating. My brother had bad breathing problems as a kid and needed a humidifier to keep his throat and lungs from drying out.
@madisonwillis95912 жыл бұрын
I would keep the house quite toasty in winter, so my ex would wake up to a nose bleed it'd be so dry. Got him a humidifier and he had no problems after. I once heard something like jumpscares are objectively the worst type of horror because it isn't true horror. Jumpscares are nothing more than a natural response to a sudden loud sound or image. you can't necessarily fight it, unless you have nerves of steel. True horror is something that follows you, that stays with you. In that regard, Paranormal Activity is quite literally the worst horror film series.
@CartoDarko2 жыл бұрын
technically yeah, but they can be utilised well with build ups to them and such, they should just be used within reason unlike these movies lmao
@gokuxsephiroth45052 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I mean, Jumpscares can be used very well in the tension-release cycle of horror, where you build up and up, then allow a scare which then releases the tension so you can build up again. It's to avoid repetition, you see- people get numb to constant horror so you gotta switch it up, and in that Jumpscares definitely have their place. But it's like how a fart joke can be part of a good comedy. It should not be the majority of what you have to offer.

As a born and raised San Diegan, I never knew the first two movies were filmed in San Diego and Carlsbad respectively until a couple years ago. The movies may not be the best, but I still appreciate the fact that they were made in my hometown lol. Also Alex saying Carlsbad can't be a real place hurt my soul. Edit: And the beginnings of 3 and 4 were also shot in Carlsbad which is cool too. (I originally commented this after they finished the 2nd one) Also, you guys should've watched the 5th one! (The Marked Ones) It's unironically the best one so far!

I watched this in the cinema when it first came out as a youngster. After getting off the bus and walking home I was shitting myself at every corner. At the time my younger sister used to have these things called night terrors. Basically just super vivid nightmares where she would act like she is awake, happened all the time. I was laying in bed watching family guy or russell howards good news to try to not think of the film I'd just watched. Out of nowhere my sister just appeared in the doorway, all I could really see was her silhouette standing there silently. As you can imagine I shit my self. She just proceeded to steal my digimon teddy at the end of my bed and went to the bathroom to violently cry as she usually did until my mum had to wake her up.

Oh my god seeing someone with night terrors is so scary. My little sister used to have them. She would "wake up" just screaming. And if you tried to go near her to comfort her she would flip out. Eventually it would stop and she would actually wake up. But being woken up in the middle of the night to actual screams is so scary.
@tomev20082 жыл бұрын
@@calicoathena My sister would either come to my room, stand looking at me for a couple minutes, grab my teddy at the end of my bed, talk about bubble wrap and then go to the bathroom and start screaming and crying till my mum stopped her....or she would stare at me, lay down and sleep at the end of my bed. Terrifying honestly.

Fun fire safety tip. Always always always sleep with the doors closed. It can save your life. Look up pictures of house fires that had the bedroom door closed, the bedrooms are practically untouched. That and it stops ghost nonsense
@callumd64992 жыл бұрын
I was in a fire. I had the place to myself so when I got into bed, I left my bedroom door open. I was just getting to sleep then for some reason decided to get up and close the door. Woke up to my whole apartment on fire, flames coming out of the windows next to my bedroom. I didn’t close the kitchen door so the smoke and flames travelled through the place but the bedroom door being closed clearly saved my life. The fire alarm system failed as well so yeah was pretty lucky
