The last time that Justin and Dan talked was in 2019 which really ended their friendship

​@@RuRyRyRyanRoiland's side of the story is that he was forced out of the writing room over time, and that he had less and less input as his relationship with Harmon fell apart. I don't really believe one story over the other, I think it's clear that Roiland was checked out and upset by season 3, so much so that he had already started doing a new show for Fox at the same time. He obviously still wanted to write. Though all stories seem to point to self-destructive behavior. But that's honestly not what I dwell on. I just know that the show had an amazing formula that they ultimately didn't try to preserve. Dan Harmon's writing always got so full of itself, and Roiland's low brow, goofy jokes offset it fantastically. They never really made an attempt to emulate what Roiland brought to the table, so it inevitably turned into another Harmon project that thought it was too smart for the audience. Season 4 and onwards was mid.

I also think the juxtaposition of both Beth's falling deeply in love with herself to the point of wanting to be with each other forever, where as when both Jerry's kiss each other they just try it out and treat it like a formal exchange and move on with their lives almost like nothing happened, which is so hilarious 😂. Ironic that Beth's narcissism is deeply rooted yet kinda sad to the point that she falls in love with herself where as Jerry has no self confidence to truly care too much about himself

The show started to get so full of itself around season 3-4. Dan Harmon's big problem with writing is that he just gets way too self-indulgent. Roiland was a perfect counterbalance to that, because all of his jokes are low-brow and silly for the sake of being silly. That was what made Rick and Morty special. But when Roiland basically left the writing room (or was forced out, it was all behind-the-scenes drama) the counterbalance left. So Rick and Morty just ended up falling into all of Harmon's classic weaknesses.

8:22- I LOVE this episode SOOO much (minus Rick being force fed dirty dish filth). While the storyline here is funny, there is something innately eerie to me about the concept of: What if you did things In your sleep that you never knew about, and there was no way for your waking self to know for sure where you were? You can look for clues during the day, but what if your sleep self thought of that? You might record yourself, but what if your sleep self knew how to somehow doctor the recording to make you think you were in bed all night? Are you 100% certain that you can even trust yourself at that point? Can you make peace with not always knowing what you're doing? You could ask a friend to watch you, but what if your sleep self convinced your friend to keep it a secret? There's a Jekyll & Hyde kind of psychological horror paranoia to it, this premise of having a hidden side to oneself that only comes out under certain conditions. Going down that rabbit hole can easily make for an entertaining existential crisis.
