I really got invested in the show when I learned the show itself is loosely based around the real events of a tragedy in Korea where the government pretty much allowed this. Not everything is spot on but the uniform outfits were an actual thing, the courtyard for red light green light was VERY close to the actual courtyard from the tragedy, rich people did watch the tragedy for entertainment, they did play games as a creative form of torture, and organs were harvested.

Trust me IT IS HARD to understand what is going on around you, even if you are a good fighter. I believe fighting like this is even harder than fighting in complete darkness.
