Yeah that's the theory I often go with as well that season 4 and beyond are all taken place before the events of this movie. I also theorize that the Krusty Krab 2 was cancelled after Krabs realized how he's legally obligated to share the profits with the manager of the second Krusty Krab and that's why it's no longer a thing after the movie.

honestly when watching this in the theater when it came out, I was about 9 and it didn't haunt me. I found the whole thing to be kinda hilarious, probably because in my head I was thinking "they're barely close enough to a normal movie's end time, they're not gonna stay dead." It wasn't until I was older that I went "jeez... that is a sad scene." I was like that with a lot of movies as a kid and I'm not really sure why. Might have been because I watched too many that had a predictable outcome, which at the time I didn't understand was not inherently bad. I was the same way with watching Monsters Inc in the theater at age 6, I just didn't have the emotional intelligence yet to understand how dire the situations in the latter half of the movie truly were, and why the final moment is a beautiful tearjerker.

The epic story, iconic characters, and banger songs, and especially the build up to "Goofy Goober Rock" are all just amazing. As many as you know, this movie was meant to be the conclusion to the series, but Nickelodeon just saw the popularity the show had. And, like most companies with runaway successes, they milked it dry (not to discredit the good found in the recent seasons as there’s fun to be had in Season 5 - 8 for example, but it’s hard to find that kind of good). But, yeah, since this is canonically the end of the show’s timeline, i’m kind of surprised that they didn’t make an epilogue (I know there’s rightful controversy on SpongeBob’s spin-offs and whether Stephen Hillenburg allowed it or not, but a series on SpongeBob running the Krusty Krab 2 would’ve done ASTRONOMICALLY better than Kamp Koral)

You know, the scene where Spongebob and Patrick slowly drying out from the lamp and watching them singing goofy goober theme song while slowly dying makes me cry when I was little. I know that there is an episode where Spongebob first met sandy in Tea in the Treedome. Spongebob and Patrick did dried out but didn't show them of them dying but in the Movie, it did show us of them dying which made me cry
