A trip to the Netherlands in an untried and tested car. What could possibly go wrong?. Oh boy I'm looking forward to this adventure!! A new, more sensible vehicle? Looking forward to that too! What a cracking tidying job you've (Carly) done to the "unit" It's massive! Bob fully "erect" drying and room for betty. Hardest part is keeping it that way. Well done both of you.

Would suggest hanging sheets from the rafters. Veticle obviously takes up less room and provides better airflow, so faster drying. After all, the awning already has the fittings to be hung

7 mpg was good and only for a short distance, my Series 1, 2 Ltr Land Rover only averaged 5 mpg towing 4 ton, had to use low range to climb any hill. May have been about 6 ton as the farmer loaded 10 buckets of spuds into the trailer, each about half a ton. Not surprising that the long rear half shaft was snapped often, the twisting was visible.

I loved that video, and nice to see Betty inside the unit for once :) I'm curious what the more sensible purchase is going to be, personally I hope it won't be a Citybug. I've driven one a few times as a loaner when my car was in for repairs and I found it very uncomfortable to drive, very bouncy suspension. Perhaps an Hyundai Atoz might be a good option? Can't wait :)

Sensible new car you say? I would say something like a K11 Micra with a high mileage, short MOT and slightly crusty sills and arches which will need welding for its next MOT. Sound mechanically, so should get to Netherlands and back, economical, available parts, able to seat 4 and fodder for various family members to hone their welding skills on to get through the next MOT (with backup from Tim and Lewis if it all goes a bit wrong). Then very easy for Miss and Little Miss Hubnut to drive. However this is Hubnut so it'll probably be something, ahem, quirkier

A big old diesel estate that is in the historic class would do all the family stuff and tow the camper and any other trailer you might get. I know rust might be a problem so maybe a merc or volvo would do it. Get a 1984 or earlier and road tax and MOT would no longer be a problem . Spares wouldn't be a problem either. I know Japanese cars were your era but, as you have found out, the spares situation isn't the best. If you want something more reliable and modern but still cheap consider a Dacia Duster or Logan. I think the road tax went up around 2017 so anything before that should be low tax. I know they are not all that interesting but you need a core vehicle that will do all the day to day stuff and you can then concentrate on the rest. Look for something with a towbar.
