For the skin issues on the electric eel look into botanicals or mud. For fly river turtles they have found that they require soft bottoms to dig into that will remove parasites and infections from the skin. Really loving this educational style video

Regarding the skin, maybe black water the tank, where they typically live is amongst roots in tanned water, with decaying wood and leaves. So aquarium dirt, wood and leaves.

Electric eels probably don't like clear water and having no hiding spaces. They always live in very muddy water, sometimes just puddles durning the dry season.
@RoboReptile417 күн бұрын
My thought exactly, maybe they just need more shelter / foliage cover too.
@josh81p20 күн бұрын
I bet if you made a mud aquarium where its 3"-4" of mud with enough water for him to slide around in, he would thrive. They are mostly found in muddy run offs coz i would believe the mud is cooler than water.
@johnwilkerson980418 күн бұрын
Based on other eels I've seen/owned. I'd say get a few "caves" aka large pvc tubes big enough the eel can fold itself in half in without getting stuck or leave both ends open so it's not a worry

What if swimming for the electric eel and being active is due to stress? Just curious why you see a large activity level as being beneficial? Thinking this on the basis of large predators pacing which is being active but it's just a loop. Maybe the moment is due to trying to keep warmer? This is in no way criticism just looking at it from another angle
@musicalmike4519 күн бұрын
Yes, I think animal behaviourists call it displacement activity...just a responce to stress, boredom etc. I've noticed that pacing is usually repetitive and follows the same pattern. On the other hand, increased activity could be instigated by hunger for example. Also, not sure about keeping such a seemingly delicate animal which does'nt take well to captivity.
@douglasstone168419 күн бұрын
It funny you mention the cooler temperatures, I've been to Brazil, Guyana and Suriname. I've seen and caught electric eels in all three countries, one thing I found is you'll find large number of eels in certain areas. You find the at the base of small streams that enter the main river, even if the stream has dried up. When there is water in that stream it is probably cooler water. If it rains hard all sorts of critters might get washed in the water as the flood water recedes.

According to current research, maintaining a slightly lower gut temperature may be associated with a longer lifespan, as studies show a correlation between lower core body temperature and increased longevity in various species, including humans; however, this is a complex topic with ongoing research, and actively trying to drastically lower your gut temperature is not recommended without consulting a healthcare professional. Key points to consider: Lower temperature, longer life: Research indicates that in general, a slightly lower body temperature is associated with a longer lifespan across different animals, including humans. Gut microbiome role: The gut microbiome plays a significant role in regulating body temperature, and studies suggest that certain gut bacteria compositions may be linked to lower core temperatures. Mechanisms unclear: While the connection between lower temperature and longevity exists, the exact mechanisms are still being investigated. Potential concerns: Extreme cooling not advised: Deliberately trying to significantly lower your gut temperature through extreme measures could be harmful and is not recommended. Individual variations: Factors like genetics and lifestyle can also influence body temperature and its relationship to longevity. What you can do for gut health: Healthy diet: Focus on a balanced diet rich in fiber, probiotics, and diverse foods to support a healthy gut microbiome. Regular exercise: Physical activity can positively impact your gut health and overall well-being. Stress management: Chronic stress can negatively affect your gut health, so practice relaxation techniques. Consult a healthcare professional: If you have concerns about your gut health or want to explore strategies to optimize your gut temperature, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

You raise good points, and I've always felt the same. However, Joe mentioned the Flowerhorn, who is a completely fabricated fish of the hobby, and has never ever seen any lakes. Maybe that's true for them, plus they require 80⁰ to 86⁰ water temp, which is easier to keep in smaller tanks.

For many years kept a large eel in a pond in the fish house , it was dirty dark with a lot of plants and Lillie’s covering)no the surface, it was hand tame to feed with fish, and tinned cat food made sure the air temp was over 26 c , started at 8 inches died 15/16 years later at nearly 6 feet
@jmp21620 күн бұрын
Maybe it’s because they get 8 feet and without ample room to stretch. Sound waves could actually be doing damage internally. There not naturally active fish.

One comment on the breeding process. I had a 55G setup with a variety of fish and one of them had baby’s/ FRY?. I set up my old 15G high to move the babies to, sucked them out with a tube. The moved babies progressed well and I forgot about checking on the main tank andf all of a sudden there were a bunch of babies that well exceeded the size of the incubation tank. Lesson learned, let nature takes it’s course. CIRCA early ‘80’s. Miss the hobby but not the work.
