I don't know if anyone noticed, but I think the cover is suppose to depict the part where Gat, Johnny, and Mirren go into the ocean. I remember looking at the cover while I was reading it and wondering why there are only 3 people on it instead of 4.

I was also mainly upset about the dogs rather than the kids. The ending made me read the last 10 pages like 5 times too, crazy. I read this on netgalley but i'm definitely gonna try and get hold of it again to read again.

So I had to re read the book a few times because I wanted to pick up all the hints and there was this moment that is SO IRONIC but no one seems to catch it. It was when the other 3 liars were sun tanning and cadence comes up and asks if their wearing lotion and johnny says "I won't burn" like oh my gosh I just got my mind blown lol

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused about the shotgun thing. I thought it really happened for a second and was like, "Wait! Isn't the big thing supposed to be at the end!?" I also read it in one sitting just because I had to know. I was so upset by the dogs! I thought, "Oh, no! Puppies!!!!" but when I found out they were all dead I was like, "What!?" but didn't care as much about them.

First of all, nice review! And yeah, the(spoiler alert) liars were definitely ghosts(not hallucinations). In my review I talk about this, but in chapter 22 taft calls cadence and says that he thinks cuddledown is haunted. Later during summer 17, cadence sits with the liars on the roof of cuddledown and they hang out there quite a bit. Definitely seems like there’s a connection!

I finished this book last night. I liked the way it was written, the metaphors were confusion though I had to re-read stuff. I had no idea any of them were dead so the end was a massive shock, I'm not sure how I feel about the idea that they were ghosts / in her conscience. The dogs, those poor dogs…It was a good book, I got through it quickly but like you I liked it but I didn't love it.

I loved this book! I had never read anything like it and it will for sure stick with me for a long time. As for the reason why they are called 'The Liars', I think is meant to be ironic, sort of. Like, the adults were the ones who lived in the lies and, basicly, lied. So their group would be called the liars, because in that family, they were the ones who actually didn't lie. Does that make sense? I hope it does, because that is how I see it. :) Great video, by the way!

I loved this book. I agreed with all the mystery and amazing writing in metaphors, etc. I liked it because it is something I think many families can relate to in the fact that so often there is an image to live up to or someone they feel they must please. There is a lot of dependency on the patriarch of the family as the three Aunt's were greedy in part, because there financial stability as they knew may be coming to an end. They were rearranging their own wants and lives in order to keep their father happy so that they would not be cut from the money tree. The saddest thing I think is that so much of what happens seems to be based on greed but really I think it is on keeping secrets, on living to please someone else and feeling like you have to bribe or manipulate love from them. It is also something that seems to have been passed down. The younger kids like Cady did not want to live like that and wanted it to stop and in that desire, made immature plans that are typical of confused and hurting teens that brought about so much devastation and heartache, that could have been avoided with unconditional love and acceptance. Great life lessons can be taken away from this book. Just a few of my thoughts but yes, I will add, the loss of the dogs was so sad, as they were the innocents in all of this. :(

I felt so bad for the dogs too! I definitely had to take a moment before continuing on with the story. It actually took me a while to figure out that the gun shot in the beginning was a metaphor. One of my theories was that Cady was dead the whole time and just couldn't remember dying. I would love to read this again and try to pick up on clues I may have missed. I also loved the fairy tales in the beginning of some of the sections.

There don't need to be a 'we were liars' movie because it already exist. Its called 'the uninvited'. I was really disappointed by this book( and I did follow everyone's advice by knowing as little as possible) and my prediction was 100% correct. SPOILER ALERT: I guess all three were dead earlier on in my reading( I notice the clues and it was quite easy to spot them) yet I continued reading it, hoping I was wrong.
@firstmatador

My problem with this book was that I guessed that the three of'em died right after no one of'em replied to cady's emails. Which was confirmed more when Cady's conversations with the three others were always away from the others. I think it was pretty obvious. So it was really challenging for me to be patient n finish it.

I feel like if this book was a bit longer I might have cared more about the characters. I didn't know about them enough or read about them long enough to have an attachment to them. I think that's the only downfall about this book. Other than that the writing style is absolutely stunning. I felt like it was pure poetry. And the twist was incredible, I loved how after you find out about the twist you can just think back of things and it all starts to click. Like you said this would make an amazing movie. Especially if it's advertised as this cutesy teenage summer love story. It'll hit viewers like a ton of bricks.

There was smth mentioned about the recovery process and how doctors said that she can spend some time on the island after a year or so and after that she'll be better. So I think that her imagining her friends was a part of recovery and when she finally let the whole situation go and came in terms with what happend, that's when when they left. RIP Fatima and Prince Phillip.

What the crap this book was freaking insane. Like between the metaphors, the freaking dogs dying, and then just them all being dead. I can't it was just so shocking! I kind of suspected they were dead when Cady saw her aunt outside crying wearing Johnny's jacket. But then bc of how unreliable the narrator is I was just like no way. I love how everything came together in the end and I felt so dumb that i missed so many of those clues. This would he an awesome movie so glad I read it! Woah and I cried so much...I can't believe how much it affected me. I'm such a wimp Lol. Awesome review!

I agreed with all you said. I really enjoyed the book, the mystery aspect of it was very suspenseful. I would have never guessed that ending, which was new for me because even though I LOVE contemporary novels, the endings are very predictable a lot of the time. I started to get an inkling that Gat was dead right before the whole truth was reveled but I never would have guessed with Johnny or Mirren. Once the truth was revealed however, so much more started to make sense. As I was looking back everything came together (Mirren's sickness, Gat's secret he couldn't tell, the cliff jumping scene, etc.) All together though I really enjoyed the book and the ending is definitely like you said one you will never forget.

Yes! This would be a great movie, hopefully one day it will be. I personally didn't love this book. I thought that it was just okay. I didn't connect with any of the characters or like any of them that was probably the authors intention though. I didn't guess the ending but I wasn't surprised either, I kind of just accepted it. The writing was wonderful. I adored the fairytale aspect and the beautiful yet strange metaphors.

And also I forgot to mention that IMO the fact that the reader wouldn't connect with the characrers is what the author kept in mind while writing it. She mentiones all the time that the Sinclairs are blonde and perfect and cold and everything so if the reader would love at least one of them the story would not be as shocking that's why the book itself is short. The author emphasised Cady's situation and it wouldn't be the same if she went into descriptions of characters. Even the writing style is different. The sentences are short. This is what makes the book unique.

I agree the characters weren't really relatable and Cadence was not a reliable narrator at all which enhanced the mystery of this story. I enjoyed her exaggerations of how much she had to keep bottled up to "be normal." I'm tempted to have my 9th graders read this for examples of unreliable narrators, ambiguity, and exaggeration. I always love seeing the "wth just happened" look on their faces after a good story. I felt worse for the dogs than the kids as well. :-) Cheers!

I liked this book, it's a take on the King Lear story. But I didn't love it. The writing was fantastic, but I had some flashbacks to the Maze Runner and what I HATED about that story. In the Maze Runner, everyone seems to know what's going on, but na-na-na-na, we're not going to tell Thomas. It felt the same in this story, that everyone knew what happened and they would almost come out and say, "I know what happened but I'm not going to tell you," and both the reader and Cadence are WTF? What happened? It was so sad to find out what happened at the end, but seriously, what kind of dumb-ass plan was that? It was guaranteed to cause mayhem and death.
