i read this for my high school book club and i feel the exact same way! literally everything you said resonated with me. i really couldn’t connect with the characters (like you said, the dogs dying in the fire was more sad to me than the liars), at the beginning, telling the characters apart and figuring out how they are related was confusing, and i wish the author spent more pages writing about the ending rather than the rest of the events which were boring to me.

This book just felt like a dream that I wouldn’t remember after few days . The main characters were so bland , the comparison between gat and the brown mouse kind of made me feel icky 🤨 . The plot twist was good but at the same so damn confusing . It was a okay book which was overly hyped by tik tok.

I will say I think the comparison between Gat and The Brown Mouse was supposed to make you feel icky. A pretty substantial amount of this book is talking about Gat's (and Ed's) non-whiteness, and the way that those two characters are treated differently because of it, as well as the way those connected to these two characters are treated because of it - particularly by Granddad. I think the whole point of that comparison is to show how uncomfortable this is and for it to feel icky and wrong to people because it is icky and wrong

@@ppp12222 I know but I’m just saying I don’t think the fact that it came off racist is a reflection on Lockhart, rather that it’s a reflection on Granddad and his ignorance and misgivings. I think it’s saying that Granddad sees Gat as a beast or as Heathcliffe or as a little brown mouse not worthy of what he sees as his little white princess. I think it was supposed to feel racist cuz it was commentary on Granddad’s racism

Agreed. I felt like it was trying hard to be deep with it’s repetition and metaphors, but even just as a 21 yr old, it didn’t work on me 😂 The characters just weren’t relatable. The emotion wasn’t connecting. The saddest part was the two dogs dying. And then she barely seems to care to deal with the guilt and grief at the end.

That was what my gut instinct was telling me when reading the book! I thought the Liars tried to kill Cady for the inheritance (knowing she's the first born of the grandchildren) and make it look like an accident, and when she didn't die, they made up the story about how she hit her head in order to hide that they were the ones guilty for her head trauma! Was totally disappointed by the outcome, it felt like the novel was a waste of time given that most of the action did not even actually happen 😑

I feel like this book has a deeper meaning than we see. To me, Cadence jumping off the cliff into the water looked like a (tw) suicide attempt. I never really understood how she literally forgot they were inside. No matter how drunk you are you can't forget about the people in the house helping you to pour gas, right? SO I started thinking. Cadence seems to lie A LOT in the book, she's contradicting herself etc. This book was written only from HER perspective so we don't know if what she's telling us is the truth, hence even the character's behavior (Mirren, Jhonny and Gat) could be lies considering the fact that they were literally hallucinations created by CADDY's messed up brain. We don't even know if the characters actually behave like that. So I came to this. 1. Caddy could've been lying about not caring about the legacy and wealth. 2. She could've killed them on purpose so she and her mom get the money. And I know some people might disagree with this theory and that's ok. But we gotta admit that she's a big fat liar from the beginning and nothing she says can be trusted. "But why did she go after everyone to save them if she did it on purpose?" She could've regretted it and realize what a shitty and messed up thing she did so she tried to undo her actions but it was too late, and that's what gave her PTSD, murdering someone, especially close to you, can give you PTSD. So again, she tried to take her own life out of guilt and probably to be with them again but failed. The only things that don't really make sense with this theory is why did she leave the poor innocent dogs inside and Gat (if she really loved him like she kept saying in the book). However she keeps mentioning how she "can't stand fools" at the beginning of the book and at the end. Why does she have to repeat that at the end? Is she trying to say that she couldn't stand them because they were all fools for not realizing setting a fire inside the house is not a good idea? or is it just a thing she says like a catch phrase? Idk... Cadence doesn't sit right with me. She was mentally ill after all and it was worse than we though, so maybe she was ill way before " the accident ". And also, at the end, she didn't really look like she was regretting her actions, I kinda felt like she got the satisfaction she needed with her aunts and grandpa and was feeling relieved rather than "oh shoot I killed everyone, I should come clean and own up to my mistakes". However, I think that if this theory is actually true, it would make the book A LOT better than what it is now, which is "just an accident". It would add depth and just basically make it better and bring it to life. Maybe those boring 200 pages were there just to show us how much she lies and not believe her. But let's be for real, you can't kill 3 people and 2 dogs by accident on an island where you know it's only you and them. Cadence is a cold hearted criminal.

In all honestly, I did not care about the “deeper” meaning because that's how bad the book was to me. Why were readers forced to sit through boring and random interactions between one-dimensional characters on a private island (whatever). I believe that is why a lot of people do not like it. There were 200+ pages of nothing that led up to a twist. At that point, no one cared.

Felt like a basic wattpad story tbh. And let's not get started about the whole racism thing. Like as an Indian, the author could not even portray an Indian character properly. Feels like she didn't even do some basic googling about India. Like okay fine I accept Gat not having an Indian name, yeah he's upset but then he tells Cady and I quote ," You don't know anything about me. About where I live or my mom's curry.." and I just cringed so bad. Like that's all u could think abt ? Curry? And even if curry, which curry? Is is aloo, maybe paneer? We Indians eat so many different kinds of curry and we call them by their local names, not curry lol. Plus all characters were so bland and self righteous. Also very simplistic writing and the plot twist was nothing great. Ugh , time waste really. How do my friends like this crap?

I really disliked this book… I felt absolutely no connection to any of the characters and they all felt extremely one-dimensional, even Cadence. I feel as though the fairytales that Cadence wrote were supposed to be super deep and meaningful when in reality they just scraped the surface of the social issues I believe could’ve been addressed in this book. I feel like the first 200 or so pages were just written to give the twist ending more of a shock factor, almost as if the entire book was just written around the twist ending, which made most of the story feel like filler…. ALSO Cadence’s harsh judgement of her mother’s use of Harris’ money was just so completely hypocritical it just made me CRAZY! And lastly, why did they think burning down the house was a good idea? Why did they think breaking the ivory statues was a good idea? If they really cared about the social issues the rest of their family seemed to ignore, why not donate some of the proceeds from sold art and statues in the house to charity? Why not rent out the homes on the island over the winter months and use the profits for charity? Why was their first thought to burn down a house extremely important to their family, wasting potentially MILLIONS of dollars that could’ve gone to the lower class people Gat and Cadence seem to “care” so much about….

I read fantasy and paranormal too girl and this book for me was just...lacking.There was no plot but at the end, I actually thought it was beautiful and sad. But I feel like the author just thought of the end of the book and decided to work backwards to fit the end. But I would have preferred the ending to be the middle and Idk for caddy to actually find a meaning to live. You don't know why she wants to keep on living after such a traumatic event, I mean yes the ghosts of her loved ones have forgiven her but still she has to live with the fact that they died because of her. And she really didn't get any repercussions from what she did! I mean yea she had horrible migraines and selective amnesia but she never thought "you know what I am an actual criminal and need to pay for my crimes". And in the end, she kind of got what she wanted(her granddad being more accepting of her indian uncle, her aunties and mother being more close). The characters were bland and had poor rich little girl problems! The revelation was underwhelming and the protagonist was annoying to be honest. Finally I see someone who pointed out how terrible the fire plan was!! And I saw Jack Edwards review it and he said that the sentences are fractured because it maybe a way of capturing the fracture in her thoughts and brain. But the broken sentences were insanely annoying. I wish they would have given out the twist somewhere near the 170 mark and then had given a little bit of background into everyone's character for the remainder of the book, that would have allowed them to have some substance and MAYBE some connection.

I don't think those were “random encounters and conversations,” rather those were the way of showing how the fire changes everything. From the island itself to the demeanor of the characters. Those talks and events were written to reveal how the characters are coping and how confusing it is to Cady. But I agree, the book lacks in emotional attachments. The characters, especially the liars didn't connect with me. I was surprised at the ending, it was a great twist, but yeah, could've written better.

I'm an English teacher, and SO many of my kids recommended this book to me saying that they loved it. I read it on a long plane ride and I could not agree more with everything you said. Unlikable cast, weak relationships, and unsatisfying revelations. It's somehow simultaneously both a slow-burn and a rushed plot, which I didn't think was possible. I did enjoy the prose and the random switches to verse, though.

No, you're not crazy. I believe that longer chapters and more meaningful conversations could strengthen the connection with the characters and making the ending reveal much more impactful. I also don't think that this is the best book I've ever read, but it‘s better than a typical school book.

At first it was overwhelming to remember the characters but because there was so many interactions you remember all the family connects with much more ease. The book seemed all over the place to mirror cadences confusion in everything and her unconsciously ignoring the truth but rather wanting to live in the good times and imagine all the things the liars would be doing. It was written in a clever way so now when you reread you can pick up on all the clues throughout the book after knowing the ending. The emails, gat being the same height and not grown at all, no recent interactions with the liars and other family. We can also understand the aunts behaviour much more now we know what they are grieving. I felt a connection to the characters but I believe people would feel different things depending on their age and environment. I was 16 when I read this book and it’s one of my favourites because it really did pull at my heart strings . The little sections at the end dedicated to each character really got to me because I felt cadences loneliness and sadness

I liked the book, that might just be me, but I liked the story. It did get weird eventually, but in my opinion, if you read the prequel after it kinda makes more sense? I do actually agree with you mostly- the ending was rushed, and I feel like if we found out sooner, like at least after 100 pages? Honestly it would’ve been so much better if the ending wasn’t like as rushed? Ik this is a stupid comment but in the end, I liked the book, but there were some major parts that could’ve been better

I do agree! The book was incredibly boring to me. The only thing I knew prior to reading the book was that there would be a major plot twist. I was daydreaming while my hands were flipping through the pages just wondering "When will the plot twist come?". That is the only thing that kept me reading.. If I had no prior knowledge to the plot twist, I probably would have stopped reading.

I actually did enjoy the way it was written. I loved the way she told stories through the fairytales. I do think the reveal is rather dull. Quite boring even. But going back and re reading for the foreshadowing that happened was fun. Also I fucking hate Cadence's character. And the dogs dying was the saddest part of it all.

That whining thing about cadence is sooo true!!! irl also...i don't like people who lament so much and put themselves first in every conversation...like okay everybody has the right to put them first but for God's sake ...listen to the other person as well. Moreover I felt that Cady is THE MOST SPOILT ...whereas as the protagonist she gave this adjective to her mother and aunts throughout. And lastly...i too think this book is overhyped. People on the internet literally be like - **ohhh gosh ...it had me crying** . As for me I didn't felt much.

well i was emotionally invested not gonna lie , but the revelation was done poorly and what you said about the prose that it feels random is so true , i was thinking that the whole time .Did you notice the time we get to know the liars (main charecters ) more is in part 3 and 4 which was supposed to be happening in cady's head that means that the dialogs were not really happening but the projection of cady's imagination that means we didn't actually get to know about them ,I mean i know it's fiction but this part didn't really sit well with me . also the charecters are under developed

This is very good, i cant understand those who cant relate to the characters. And im surprised somebody dont appreciate it, rating it to 1 star. First of all i did not cried here but it did leave a hole in my heart. After reading i just said to my mother i am traumatized. I can exactly picture every character. And its beautiful like poetry affects the reader. The writing is beautifully written, but if you re looking for an entertaiment, you should look for fantasy books...
