Like Boucher, Kleven was often penalized for simply hitting people to hard

Yup, an undesirable skill in college is going to be a huge asset in the NHL... Dorion haters need to take a look at the 26/27 Sens roster that is already signed and understand what an incredible job Dorion has done putting the right pieces in the right holes. It all begins with Tkachuk. The Chris Neil with bigger size and skill is the ultimate captain, and trickles down to these North Dakota picks, of the recent past. Sens are primed and ready to go. Can't wait to see what the next decade has in store for this franchise!

North Dakota student who has met Kleven and saw him play his entire college career, he was amazing I knew he is going to kill it at the time. Wish more attention was paid attention to the college prospects. Thank you for your work

The "Kleven takes too many penalties" narrative is not true. He got suspended in college for simply being bigger, stronger, and meaner than everyone else. That doesn't mean he is dirty or takes too many penalties, it means he needs to be playing against men.

I don't agree with Wheeler's take on his discipline. A lot of his penalties were the result of NCAA refs reacting to hard hits and would never be called in the NHL.

Agreed, in the OHL and NCAA you get suspended or a major penalty for hitting too hard.

Say what you want. Ottawa finds a way to draft well and find gems whenever they draft. Tkachuk. Stutzle. Sanderson. Kleven. Not to mention good players that aren't even with the organization anymore. Can't trade that great tho I will say that

Not to mention their late round gems and scouting over seas - Batherson, Zub, Pinto, Ostapchuk (who is still building but looks good). They consistently hit in the late rounds.

I always say this, but I (use) to trust the scouting department of the Senators more than actual public scouting firms. I think Dorion and the Mann brothers had a vision for how the Senators will be competitive and compete for the cup. By becoming this bruising, hard to play against, never give up, pesky underdog and they stuck to drafting players that fit that mold. With the Mann brothers gone, and with a new ownership coming in, I don't know if that is what the vision of the club is going to look like in the near future, but I do hope to see this vision play out for a couple of years now that a majority of the pieces are in the system.

That's why I am always optimistic around Ottawa Senators a lot, that's why other teams won the Stanley Cup, it starts with drafting and getting right players, Ottawa Senators are getting really close, they are known coming back more than once, Agree 👍

The penalties that he got called for in the NCAA would rarely get called a penalty in the NHL

Very hyped on what the K-train can bring to this team.. maybe not this season but he should push for a regular roster spot next season

Yes, there's a lot of hype for the K-train. I'm still not going to show my cards as I don't know what to think. 8 games such a small sample, but I find that having a big defensive D is a thing that the Sens needed for a while.

Best case scenario is he becomes a defensive force to replace Zub in the top 4, worst case now seems to be him being a valuable bottom pairing guy

Kleven will be a punishing, solid top 4 dman at worst. Kid is a complete package and well rounded. Extremely poised (like Sanderson) in his NHL cup of coffee. Different skill sets but both confident, competent NHL players who will only get better. Hope they learn to play the right side though..Sens are stacked at LD.

whats new most Sens prospects were seen as the wrong or bad picks at the time cause people thought they were only drafting based on size but they saw other elements in their prospects and also draft based on what team they expect them to be developed by in juniors hence all the NoDak Sens dmen being drafted from that program cause the Sens know its a very good and reliable program with great coaches for defensemen

It’s more so the superficial fact that people think European names like Hirvonen and Niemela automatically make them better than a boring English sounding name like Kleven. It shows you how stupid our peers can be. Nobody truly knows what a player will become. You may have an idea and in a lot of cases a pretty good idea of what a player will become but you will never know for sure. So the whole hockey world convinced themselves that the boring sounding name “Kleven” Drafted by the smaller city “Ottawa” will be a worse player than Spicy sounding Roni Hirvonen and Topi Niemela.

If Kleven has a good camp, pair him with Sanderson to start the year. I'd love to see the young bucks given a chance to play together since they played together in NoDak. The K-Train looked really solid in the few games I saw him in last year. All aboard!! Cheers

All in his skating. He developed his skating so much from where he was in his draft season. Will be a huge factors in his ability to use his big size to effectively defend in the NHL

I'm super positve about Kleven. A big burly defenseman seoms to compliment a gritty forward core. I'm not worried about his penalty minutes.

Actually, i had been watching Tychonick as well (Dorion had been stacking North Dakota), who went thru St John's and signed on with the Marlies.

It’s funny looking back on the 2018 draft for Ottawa. Ottawa took Bernard-Docker late in the 1st and Tychonick in the mid 2nd. Plenty of draft experts had Tychonick as the much better prospect at the time and if you swapped where the players were drafted it woulda looked better and made more sense. Fast forward to now and JBD looks to be a decent 3rd pair defensive Dman (ok for a late 1st pick), while Tychonick had some rough NCAA years and didn’t get a contract from Ottawa.
