My point is people see false information and treat it like a huge lie, was just told to them by the people sharing it, but if the information shared is believed to be true at the time, how can you blame someone? Also I do some coding, and datamining is really hard, so things may just be misunderstood or misread at first, so I don't think it's necessary to go out and blame people. And I don't see this as a major thing to miss, as people still got plenty of shinies in this game, and dataminers still did their job by revealing the information, even if its been years later.

Doesn’t make it any less false, but when the intention is to get information out quickly for players, and your source is the handful of data miners who all agreed on something, it’s no longer Dan or any other poketuber’s fault. If anything it’s the fault of the people who mined the code, but it’s something they didn’t catch. It wasn’t malicious.

@@mrbubbles6468 ok. dig through 4GB of code WITHOUT knowing where your tiny piece of code that you are looking for is located and WITHOUT knowing what each variable (whos name may not even correspond to what is in letters) does and say that again. even profeshional coders can get confused in their own code from time to time. that gets amplified even more when you have to look at someone elses code, as different people take diffefent aproaches to coding and formatting that code. its rather difficult.

I honestly never paid any attention to the "stop at 31 chain combo and wait" method and I just kept catching. I found more shinies by catching well beyond chain 90+ than by getting to 31 and waiting. Thinking back, I think I only found 1 or 2 shiny via "31 chain" method and oddly enough, they weren't even the species I was shiny hunting at that moment.

Makes me feel a bit better about my method. I figured if I’m getting a shiny I wanted it to be as strong as possible, so I kept catching to get species specific candies to give to my eventual shiny. Guess it worked out in the end!

This is wild. Most of my hunts have been comfortably within the assumed 1/315 odds and a few off-target so I never questioned that the boost effected all spawns. I guess I've had way better shiny luck than I thought!

I still consider the shiny hunting method in Sword and Shield broken because the boosted shiny odds *only* affect Brilliant Pokemon, and since Brilliant Pokemon only appear a maximum of 3% of the time it still means that the method is virtually unusable. If the maximum chance of a Brilliant Pokemon appearing was boosted to at least 20% that might make it a viable way to shiny hunt, but not at 3%.

In my opinion, random encountering shinies in Sword and Sheild is really not a good idea. Pokemon can be shiny as soon as they spawn but one cannot tell whether they are shiny until they are checked. Hovever, the game instantly spits out a new pokemon after catching/ defeating the previous so it is not farfetched to assume a lot of shinies were missed. So it is basically an exercise in paranoia. Just imagine biking in the wild area, the crown tundra and the Isle of Armor, how many shinies were missed?

tbh I think something being unusuable in the sense that there's no point in using the method and something being broken are two different things. The SwSh Brilliant Method may not be a viable shiny hunting method for most people but, unless there are still things that we're not understanding about it, that's just it. It's just not a viable strategy for use. Being broken would mean it wouldn't work at all imo

Brilliant Pokemon are not shinies. Furthermore, if it takes 2 hours just to find the target you're trying to hunt then imagine how long it would take to actually find the shiny if the odds are 1 in 512. You clearly have never tried this method because you don't understand how it works. I have over 1400 legitimate shinies, so I know what I'm talking about when I compare different methods.

I’ve been saying this for years! when I hunted pidgey I stopped at 31 and it took me HOURS to finally find the shiny, but when I hunted Growlithe I got the shiny on my 63rd encounter (second 31 chain) so easily! The other couple hunts I did afterwards all came within 100 encounters simply bc I kept on catching instead of waiting. Everyone I talked to said I was “just lucky” but I knew there was a good reason!

Most of them are likely not "full odds" as completing a Dex page increases your shiny odds but many people weren't aware and just stated full odds.

There was even one time I wanted 2 shiny paras, the first one took around 150 catch combo, and the second one all the way up to 950

This is simultaneously mind blowing and hilarious. The fact that we’re still discovering things about Pokémon games across the franchise is amazing. I remember my first shiny hunt in LGE, I was going for a Pidgey to use on my first play through, literally sat there outside of Vermillion for 3 days waiting with no luck before I just started catching again to kill time some other way and it popped up at a chain of (I think it was) 87 or so. Pidgey is a super common spawn, so you're seeing heaps of them every time you re-spawn everything. As is the rattata someone was talking about in another comment. I got two full-odds shinies in the last 24 hours with no catch combo, no lure, and no shiny charm. A Pidgey and a Zubat. The Pidgey was during a catch combo of Pikachu, at that. Meanwhile: I caught a shiny Bellsprout at a catch combo of 78, with only the catch combo.

*This poses some massive pros and cons:* - The main pro is that you are far more likely to get to mon you're after and not some othe random one. - The big cons though are worrisome. First, if you were to hunt a pokemon like Charmander, not only is it a rare spawn, meaning you'd have to use lures just to make it appear, but it's also a red ring, making it harder to catch, and this information proves that combo-ing other pokemon just doesn't work. Not to mention, if catching more of that species is what gives higher odds to ONLY the next spawn, that drastically increases the chances of the chain being broken due to pokemon running away...

Well yeah, but like if you're chaining growlithe for example, usually the regular spawning rate is pretty low, but with a 31+ chain you can encounter like 3 or so each time you enter the route. So you'll have to keep in mind that if you keep catching them there will be 1 spawn with higher odds and then you'll have to catch one again to get those same odds on another pokémon. While in the meantime you could've reset the route like 2 or 3 times, that's about 6-9 chances for a 1/1024 shiny growlithe to spawn in the same time you can get 1 growlithe with a 1/273 chance to spawn (plus adding the risk to lose your streak.) So I'm not too sure if the new method is really faster.

On the first week of playing the game, I went 20 hours with no shiny at catch combo 31. Several months later, I spent 35-40 hours in Pokemon Tower on a Gastly hunt. In that whole time, I only got 4 shinies, including the Gastly. Now it all makes sense!

At least from what I've seen, First we had Sword and Shield, where the KO Method only worked with brilliant pokemon, now the catch combo only applies to the next one that spawns. No wonder like half my attempts at a shiny failed

Guys, don't feel like you've wasted loads of time doing it the 'wrong' way because the odds of 4x better doesn't mean 4x efficiency. Here's some of my maths which may help estimate percentage of catching a shiny per hour for both the normal waiting around method (1024 odds) and increased combo method for a specific shiny (273 odds). This waiting method is based on a 10 spawn area and is 3600 seconds in a hour, divided by 150 seconds maximum life span of a pokemon before disappearing equals minimum 24 spawns per hour, times by 10 spawns for that area equals 240 encounters per hour, divided by 1024 odds equals 23% shiny rate per hour. Combo increase method is based on 35 seconds average time to find, catch and go through the after-screens and is 3600 seconds in an hour divided by 35 seconds average specific encounter time equals 103 specific encounters per hour divided by 273 odds equals 37.5% chance of a shiny per hour. Therefore roughly a 15% maximum more efficiency method in theory and not 4x more efficient, I don't think it's worth all the money you waste of more lures and balls. Viridian forest is a 20 spawn area, therefore with my maths you double the normal efficiency, so 46% chance, which means it's actually better to wait than run around catching. If you want to catch a certain one, obviously get your count to 31 to increase the encounter chance of that specific pokemon.

I finally picked up lets go eevee for the first time ever last night. I just got my first switch for christmas and ive been so into sword, brilliant diamond and recently PLA. Its been amazing so far, the game is so unique and simple its fun. (Comment for the algorithm & for the march to 1M)

So my question is this. If we still had 1/1024 odds on practically everything after a 31+ chain, why did pokemon not chained appear shiny as much as they did with that low odds? I think I only chained the Charmander that I was looking for, everything else were random chains of a Pidgey or the like. Was it because there were like 8 pokemon popping on the screen at once rotating every 10 seconds (Viridian forest comes to mind) after the 31+ chain? xP

I feel the same. I think its just faster to encounter shinies with full odds when they are popping 8-10 in the screen (like we did on LGPE), than doing an infinite chain of captures even if the shiny rate was better.

Yeah my friend was shiny hunting a Pokemon in Cerulean Cave on twitch and he was sitting at a 31 catch combo and saw 2 shiny pokemon pop up on the screen at once that were of a different species. I guess it's just luck?

Question, how do rolls work. Let's say i catch 11 pidgey's. Pidgey's will spawn more frequently than right?

I still think just get to 31 catch combo to get the iv good. Don’t keep catching, each battle scene will take time out of spawns and you’ll need to grind battles for money to buy pokeballs all while you could have been standing at the spawns
