We came here to have a good time and we're honestly feeling so attacked right now! Things are going great for Richmond, but Ted is struggling when his family comes to visit, and it hits us right in the gut!

I love this show for how sophisticated it is. They could've easily make Michelle a toxic person and write a cliche divorce story. But it is fascinating that in this show they always choose the more complicated but more important storylines to write. I love how both Michelle and Ted try their best to keep the marriage going but the love is not there anymore and there is nothing either of them really could do. Also, Jason Sudeikis' acting in this episode is on another level of greatness, I swear. He deserved all of those awards for both his acting and writing (which is fucking a lot btw) that he got for this show.

Couple things: 1 - In professional football, players *do* take a knee when somebody is hurt. (I think it's a pretty standard thing across all the professional sports; not hockey because the ice and equipment make it impractical but they have their own thing too.) I'm guessing it's the same in soccer. 2 - Soccer is a weak link sport, which means the best way to make a team better is to improve the worst player (or to upgrade on your worst player) rather than improve your best player (or to add a star player). So taking Jamie/Jaime out to make the team better definitely makes sense - not just in the narrative sense but from a sports perspective. That kind of thing can, of course, be the case across all sports - ridding a team of a player who is great but relegates his teammates to bystanders, who sucks up all the possessions and doesn't allow his teammates to contribute - but in soccer that's particular true.

Also, *strongly* disagree that Ted's attitude is toxic positivity. Toxic positivity is pushing somebody to *act* positive all the time at the expense of their mental well-being, to deny feeling bad rather than working on it (or what makes you feel bad). His positivity isn't even a false front, necessarily; he's got things in his life to be sad about, of course, but he's not determined to pretend that things are good and happy when they aren't, he's obviously willing to confront negative things (like his relationship with his wife deteriorating). He's just determined to be positive and kind to people, even somebody like Jamie, because he doesn't want *exterior* forces to ruin his inner peace, his well-being. He's determined to be nice and positive to people even when they don't deserve it because how he treats other people isn't about OTHER PEOPLE, it's about *who Ted is* as a person. That's not at all toxic. (It's hard. It's even a tad unreasonable, I think. But not toxic.)

Love your comment on Ted's positivity. I try to live by the same philosophy with how I treat people. I know it's a reflection on me not them.

"Falling out of love" with someone because they are "too optimistic" is the worst reason ever, imo, i know in reality it happens but instead of working at it n sticking to it. Finding a good person to spend the rest of your life it's reaaaally hard nowadays and when there are kids involved makes it even more difficult.

I disagree, I think Ted is who he really is. I think he tries to lock away all the bad, and he focuses on the good. Sometimes the things he is dealing with explode out of him. He isn't pretending to be positive, but he is hiding all the negative feelings.

Loved this series but felt they could have given us a bit more of his wife's point of view. Little too easy to say "uh oh, feel out of love". That's someone being dishonest imho. Just one writing flaw n a brilliantly written show.

Why would making Jamie gay suddenly redeem him? That makes no sense, anyway great reaction.
@laurelf.20572 жыл бұрын
She said it would "save him as liking him as a character," not that it would redeem him.
@ImMrShows2 жыл бұрын
@@laurelf.2057 Ok? Why though? His suddenly being gay dosent make him a better or more likeable character. The statement is just strange to me.
@laurelf.20572 жыл бұрын
@@ImMrShows I didn't say it would - in fact, Jamie's my favorite character - I was just noting the difference in the two statements. My assumption is that she doesn't find anything about him interesting right now, save for his accent, and so him being gay would add a trait that would make him interesting to watch again. That said, when I first watched the show it did take me another episode to gain a fully positive opinion of him as his dickishness was at a peak in this episode (though his interaction with Henry was very sweet, one of several moments up to this point that to me indicated he wasn't one-dimensional), plus a couple more for him to become my favorite, so hopefully Alex will be similar and have a change of heart.
@ImMrShows2 жыл бұрын
@@laurelf.2057 I never said that it was you said, i was still referencing what was said in the video. Im merely stating that him being gay wouldn't make him a better character or a worse one for that matter. I was merely positing you the question to you. I have watched the series so i am aware that Jamie has massive leaps forward to become a better character. I Just dont think that him being gay at this point in the story would make him more likeable. I agree with what you have said though about his growth.
@laurelf.20572 жыл бұрын
@@ImMrShows Right, but I don't know WHY you're asking that question of me. I neither said the statement nor agree with it. All I was doing was clarifying the misinterpretation (thinking she said him being gay would redeem him vs. what she actually said, which was that him being gay would make him interesting to her).

Nope, this is going around a lot but it's not true they were still together when the episodes started airing. Considering the writing and shooting happened even earlier, they were definitely together. Did they already have some problems when he was writing this episode and that inspired him? We'll never know.
