i only use an every day carry knife. mine is the explorer, i play guitar and i build aircraft so the explorer gets used very often. here is my reasoning. 1. both blades for opening boxes without damaging the parts inside as well as delicate scraping and cutting etc. very useful for removing sealant and paint from metal and composite surfaces 2. scissors for trimming my nails and for accurately cutting string on wires, trimming wire shields and cutting off plastic zip ties 3. the Phillips screwdriver is better than any i have available in my company furnished tool box for not stripping the screw and it can be positioned 90 degrees for better torque i tighten and loosen a lot of screws 4. the flat screw driver is perfect for the many 1/4 turn fasteners on aircraft, its also useful as a wedge 5. the hook is very handy for pulling things like lock wire and for separating single wires in connectors 6. i use the magnifying glass quite often for seeing small part numbers on hardware and wires, i have also used it in conjunction with the tweezers for removing metal splinters from my self and co workers. i also use it for seeing damage on wire and for seeing the pin numbers on high density connectors i could go on and on but this is too long already

I agree, the Explorer is super practical. Only mod I would do to it is to swap the small blade for the electrician blade.

As a helicopter mechanic, I can agree to this. Explorer the best. Magnifying glass are good to read the wiring diagram. Don't start with the philip. Really like it.

WHY, Oh WHY, Doesn't Vitorinox set up a system where as we can choose each individual element on the knife we want, The way we want it ? We should get to choose size, scales, locking, what blades and how many and ALL features should be interchangeable ! There is NOT ANY aspect to the Vitorinox knife we buy that shouldn't be tailor made SO why then won't they do this ? AND don't tell me COST $$$$ Because they would just charge MORE !
@WeAllJuggleKnives
@WeAllJuggleKnives 9 жыл бұрын
Owen Joseph King I think it is because some of the tools are not interchangeable in different slots. Like the 3D phillips and the corkscrew can only fit in that bigger slot on the back. And some tools like the pliers are wide enough that they can't have a small tool opposite them.

WeAllJuggleKnives Honestly, if they offered this people would give money hand over fist. If you're paying that much, they should contact you and work it out with you. Or create a website where you can build your own. The site would know what can and can not go together or what wouldn't fit the size you're asking for. When finished it would be submitted to Victorinox to be checked by a human and confirmed for production! I know a bunch of guys who buy $200+ SAK knives as it is. They would be all over a custom one.
@Nanyael

Owen Joseph King I want t the same thing. but, I have to make my own, just disarming two of them and assemble again.

Economics! If they custom made their knives most people would buy maybe 3 or 4 knives at inflated prices because the'll get exactly what they want and of course have that lifetime warranty. Now however, over a lifetime, the average swiss army knife user buys maybe 10 to 20 knives. So they would have to charge 10 to 20 times the now price for the custom knife and people just won't do that. We want a low price for a manufactured custom knife with a lifetime warranty and we want it now. Tough economics for a manufacturer.
@follcatala
@follcatala 4 жыл бұрын
Because you would have to order it, they would have to make it for you and send. You have no idea how much expensive it would be, we would be talking 30 EUR vs 200 maybe. Would you be willing to pay? Yes maybe, but only crazy knife enthusiasts like us, I don't think it would be much profitable for the company it would be tiny revenues compared to wholesale.

I've personally carried my huntsman ever since Boy Scouts. The hunter is a neat bigger brother to it. For a time, I 'lost' my huntsman and had to get something till I could either find it again or buy a replacement for it. I decided on a Spartan for a temp carry and was pleased with it. I keep it as a standby ever since I recovered my Huntsman and very quickly and happily returned it to my pocket. The only tools I think would improve the Huntsman for me would be to replace the corkscrew with a Phillips driver and add a file. A lot of people don't know this, but the overlooked parcel hook can open some of those pesky public TP dispensers, allowing you better access to the horrible paper they think is more valuable than gold. Just remember to lock it back up when you leave the stall. If you have to work around on acreage, you really learn to love the saw. There have been times when I find a twig or small branch that is growing into the walk trails. It cuts through them almost like butter when you don't have your pruning sheers with you. I also have a clunky Swissgrip that was given to me as a gift, which has been my other most useful tool in a pinch out on the land. You just cant beat how useful Swiss army knives are in everyday life. If you doubt it, carry one for a week and then try going without it, or carrying something else.

This was actually a pretty darn cool and informative video! I love how you got into the very details of why you chose some features over others. I´ve gone through the process of picking my first SAK during the last days and i pretty much did the same thing. Since i never had a multi tool or SAK so far, i really had to go through my everyday life, just finding those situations where i had to rummage through piles of useless tools just to get that thing i needed. And since i´m no outdoors guy and the main thing i would use a SAK for is fixing little things around tha apartement or my little sons toys, it just came down to the: Deluxe Tinker!
@WeAllJuggleKnives
@WeAllJuggleKnives 8 жыл бұрын
+Christian Lang (MasterTRL) - Deluxe Tinker is a great choice, since many people won't need a saw or file. Boker actually has a model of the Tech-Tool that is similar to the Deluxe Tinker, I'm going to try it out.

For me... ? Pocket size - Minichamp ( I really use all the extra stuff, even the ruler ! ; The cuticle pusher is a great spatula that saved me many times at my university when I had to eat something during the lecture and didn't have any other cutlery ) Pocket EDC - Huntsman FTW - ALOX or no ALOX - you can give it to ANYONE and that anyone will always find a good use for it. I live in a village so the wood saw is kinda more handy here. Belt Pouch - Well I carry mine on a paracord lanyard, but I chose the handyman - for the corkscrew and pliers. I'm still wondering if the ranger woldn't be the better choice but I'm pretty happy with my choice. I carry Handyman and minichamp as my edc, so maybe I messed up the categories here :D Kit knife - Victorinox Locksmith. - I bought it for my mom and now everybody at home is using it - mostly for gardening works - file is super handy for sharpening other larger tools when it's needed asap and for smoothing poles. Also the screwdrivers on it are excelent ! And the saw... Oh man... And it has an awl ! Almost perfect but I'm not a fan of vic's 111mm design. I would prefer the Wenger's style and their style of blade lock. Beside that, it's perfect for my home. Outdoors ? Well all I can think about is Wenger ranger 66... A beautiful knife I would gladly use but quite frankly I don't have a outdoorsy dedicaten sak, so maybe I should pass this one. An interesting video for sure Also .. sorry for my english, but I'm from Poland, It's late and I'm a bit drunk :D

Great selection of SAKs. My personal choice would be a bit different but I can see the logic behind yours. Also, I wish they would start production of Alox Rambler again and make an Alox Compact or 84mm Alox Bantam with a second scissors layer - it would be a perfect EDC for someone who doesn't need all the extra tools.

Love your pocket EDC choice. I carry a Recruit with me every single day of my life and I use at least one of those tools every day. I'll have to upgrade to the S111 since it adds two more very useful tools, the awl and the Phillips, without adding any bulk. I'm so glad to see someone else with a more or less barebones EDC, I was starting to think I was the only one.

You have excellent taste and brains for picking out the right tools here and for the right reasons, I impressed and I don't impress easily with this stuff. Most channels are so full of themselves they can't just review the knives and leave it at that. Also, you make me feel a lot better about myself collecting knives and gadgets because I'm so addicted to these kind of tools, if I was married, I'm sure I would be very unhappy or getting a divorce so I could live my life the way I want to. Again, I can't say enough about how right on you are with your choices in tools and how much my tastes in these things are so close to your taste presented here. Great job, long enough for all the details for someone thinking about what to buy, but not so long people lose interest, you stayed on track the whole way, very rare. You should do a lot more of these videos. Good luck.

For hiking and EDC, I prefer the classic and the camper. I have lots of SAKs, but I keep going back to these two. The camper can be either on my belt or in my pocket. The Trekker with saw is great for hiking and bushcraft, but just too big for a pocket. Great video and analysis.

Good choices all based on your personal criteria, and great discussion to give some food for thought. Mine are similar, but not identical, with one including a discontinued model: 1. Rambler on keyring: I want the toothpick and tweezers, plus it's a bit narrower than the midnight manager. The toothpick is nearly a necessity with me due to radiation induced xerostomia and having to get stuff out of my teeth that the saliva I used to have would have washed out. Used to carry a Classic, but the bottle opener with Phillips is a most welcome addition. 2. Evo S16 pocket carry: I'll go for the additional width to get the scissors, which I use frequently. Don't always have a pocket carry, but this is the "go-to" for that. 3. Evo 23 or Woodsman belt pouch: It's a tossup between the two depending on situation. The Woodsman is a little bigger in a Zermatt, and it's a 5-layer discontinued combo of the current Huntsman and Explorer with wood saw, magnifier and Phillips (IMHO Victorinox should never have discontinued it). The EVO 23 is almost the same minus the Phillips which can be worked around using its other stuff, but it's smaller. If the larger Woodsman is OK in Zermatt on the belt I'll use it, otherwise the smaller profile Evo 23 in a more compact Wenger pouch gets the nod. I don't use a file that size hardly at all so it's not missed, but having both the saw and at least the magnifier are important to me. Your video did not include any discontinued which is OK. 4. Workchamp for kit/toolbox/workbench: I agree for all the same reasons. Only thing it doesn't have is a wrench (and pliers are a poor substitute) 5. Outdoors in the boonies: GAK version of one-hand Trekker; partially serrated main blade is fine. Don't need the gutting blade and likelihood of using a corkscrew is near nil, but want the Phillips and the separate bottle opener and can opener. Some similar thinking about the saw and other stuff. If I needed a corkscrew I'd fashion a stick into a dowel and drive the cork into the bottle (the Old Soldier's field expedient corkscrew). Thanks for doing the video as it took me through thinking about what I would use and why.

I can see in that S111 how Victorinox has incorporated some of the Wenger tools/features into their own stuff. That little clip point blade is the same as the one on an older Wenger I have, as well as that locking mechanism. Another sort of in-between knife: the Executive. Larger than the Classic, smaller than the Cadet. Lost my Classic quite a while ago, but haven't rushed out to replace it because I still have an Executive; not too big, not too small.

I work in an office environment and the I often use the cuticle pusher as a staple remover, a more substantial flat head, or light prying tasks (works great on stubborn pistachios). The package opener while redundant (just use the freaking knife) does save you from a bit of wear and tear on your blade. As for the extra blade, should you break your main blade its nice to have a backup to extend the life of the tool. For me personally I love the regular minichamp (I prefer the tweezers over the light because I like to have a light apart from my tools in case I need the tools and light at the same time.)

I have: Leatherman style cx for keychan. Leatherman skeletool for pocket knife. Victorinox trailmaster for gardening. All of them for work (I'm a schoolteacher), traveling (car or bike) and camping. I would change trailmaster for super tinker at work, and rangergrip or workchamp for camping. love your video, thanks.

Well-done. You did a good job justifying your choices. My Top 5 are - Keychain: Manager. Pocket: Explorer Plus. Pouch: Cybertool 34 (or 'M' as they will soon call it), Kit: Workchamp. Camping: One-hand Trekker NS. Why? Manager because I still need a toothpick. (I'd swap it in for the tweezers) I have rround teeth, and I'm forever picking food out from between them. Explorer Plus? Most useful everyday tool set. 4 layers is a bit thick for the pocket, but the inline Phillips + scissors justifies it. Cybertool 34? The cybertool is just wonderful. It is a thick layer, but we gain so many useful inline drivers, esp. 3 sizes of Phillips and the medium flat head. Scissors is required for me, so the 29 (S) was out. Workchamp? File, scissors, and two inline Phillips' are just a wonderful combination. In reality, I'd probably take this for the outdoors knife too, but since I get a 5th... One-hand Trekker NS. Only 3 layers, for a comfortable grip. One handed locking blade can double as a weapon, if needed, and if not, it can whittle a bit, in combination with the nice long saw. The locking large screwdriver is pure gold too. I like the rubber grip on the Soldier, but I can't give up my T&T for that tactical stuff. Outdoors is where we don't have access to tweezers for picking splinters out of fingers or toothpick for picking food out of teeth.

+Jeremy D would u prefer the trekker NS over the hunter because i need a good outdoors/camping sak i was looking at the hunter cause i wanted aknife that can cut rope and the gut knife on the hunter is good for that but i am still looking at the trekker plz help

White Lotus A sharp, non-serrated edge cuts rope about 90% as well as a serrated one. The big advantage in the serrated edge is that it stays sharp enough even when neglected for a while. (at the cost of not even being usable for certain tasks) For cutting string or paracord, for example, you won't notice a difference between a sharp plain edge and a serrated edge. If you cut a lot of thick, coarse rope, (like poly or natural) serrated is a clear winner. My bottom line is that if you know or will learn how to sharpen a knife, get the plain edge; it's just more versatile overall. If you don't know how to sharpen a knife or if you cut a lot of thick rope or cut food against a plate, then serrated main blade of a Trekker or Soldier is better.

that really helped thx! but i was asking about the hunters gut knife, is it good for cutting rope? I have already settled with a plain edge a long time ago but i used to have the hunter xt and i used the gut hook to cut rope. All im asking is the hunter's gut hook good for cutting rope as well?
@Smaug1
@Smaug1 8 жыл бұрын
I don't know, as I don't have the Vic gut hook. I would think not, since it is designed only to cut the skin of an animal without puncturing the internal organs.

nvm i found out that it is not only good for cutting rope but can cut through seat belts pretty good too! I finally got a chance to use it in person when i found out my friend had received it not long ago. And all i have to say is that the gut hook is SHARP i even cut my hand trying to cut rope and seat belts with is and did not have a good grip so it slipped off my hand.

I received a Hunter as a gift, I never considered to have one but it grew on me. Sad thing is I live in Europe so carrying it is out of the question for me. But if there's a Without Rule of Law (including the law regarding knife carry) situation this will be ready to use lol. Otherwise for pouch and outdoor use I also have a Huntsman (the Ranger minus the file) which I'm extremely happy with. For pocket carry I prefer the 2-layer Compact (fits perfectly in the 5th pocket) with its scissors, pen etc. For the keychain I used to recommend the Manager which I still have (it's like the Midnite Manager but instead of the useless LED it has space for tweezers or toothpick) but it's recently been discontinued which baffles me. So I have to agree on the Midnite Manager being the best choice in the range. In some areas it even beats the 91 mm Compact: its pen is more comfortable to use and the nailfile is larger as well.

Can you suggest any of this type? I assume it would be 13cm model, but still hope to find something like 9.5 maybe.=

I'm sure somebody has already mentioned this here, but that four less desired tools you pointed out in the MiniChamp were the discontinued Pharmacist's tools: a scalpel, a spatula or spoon, a packet opener, and a ruler which could help measure depth of powder or luquid in a vial.

For me cadet in my pocket and classic so on my keys. Got the larger most useful tool (in my opinion) on the cadet, with the things it’s lacking (scissors, pick and tweezers) on the sd. Plus the back up blade that takes up no room is a bonus. Would be nice to have something else instead of the back up file on the sd but. Perfect combo for me!

Never really cared about SAKs until I happened upon a well used climber for a low price that I cleaned/sharpened, and once I learned about the existence of plus scales upgraded mainly so I could have a pen that I would never leave somewhere. On a whim I ordered the translucent blue 'sapphire' and upon completion I immediately got hooked on SAKs and modding them. Too bad the wide range of translucent scale colors are functionally impossible to find in the US and oddly I cannot find emerald plus scales so my emerald explorer is left without pen/pin. I highly recommend printing scales if you own a 3d printer I have several SAKs with glow in the dark 3d printed scales the 58mm models look especially great in this configuration, you can also use a wood filament to print a corkscrew screwdriver 'handle' that can serve as 'tinder' (wood filament will hold a small flame) that is much cheaper than the Tortoise Gear product specifically if you only need a couple of them with a 3d printer there's an enormous range of customization options for SAKs. The only downside is the poor pocket clip options I've yet to find one that isn't a major compromise in some way and they typically cost too much, this is something 3d printing really can't solve at the moment because a bad clip could cause you to lose your sak

I couldn't agree more with the selection of the manager. I found out about it when looking up Victorinox tools with pens. I think it's intended as an upscale version of the signature but it turns out to be a great alternative to the minichamp. It weighs less, costs less, and you probably don't want most of the tools it lacks anyway.

keychain - (alox) minichamp pocket - sportsman pouch - swisstool cs plus kit - climber/explorer outdoors - swisschampi prefer ecoline scales over translucent, translucent over cellidor ...right off the bat. as soon as i heard the categories. only models i own and as far as i know are in production i love your choices. very sensible. your philosophy about the manager vs the minichamp makes so much sense. the tools on the mc you poited out are definitely the least used for me. the pen and toothpick are relly necessary though, and i had to carry an extra pen ince i switched to the alox. -there should be a standard production alox manager!! i don't have the really large SAKs, don't see the point for them considering that i mainly carry once of my two swisstools at all times, but i really like them. just don't have a use unfortunately and they're too damn valuable in edc situations to just sit at home. great gifts though. need to buy a ranger. i must have forgotten about it..

In the pocket category, I would rather give up the secondary blade and combine the two openers into one to have the scissors in the same size instead. There's no point having essentially the same two tools twice if you can fit the very practical scissors in their place. That's why Compact is very good in my opinion, if I don't mind the full 91mm size.

The Compact gets more pocket carry time for me than any other knife. Just wish they'd replace that hook with a fine Phillips kind of like the one on the Mini Champ/Manager/Rambler, but with a flat spine that retains the integrated file instead. It would be absolutely perfect then IMO.

In terms of durability I love the alox models. The scales are very wear ressistance and all the tools are bit more stronger. So they are perfect to keep them in your pocket very lightweight and tough pocket knives. My personal favourite are the Pioneer X and Cadet. In larger frame my favourite is the RangerGrip 79. Excellent tool for travelling and camping. The extra blade length is great for food preparation and the saw is great for making a small camp fire. I still have other 111 mm Victorinox knives with liner lock but I find the Rangergrip in everyterm superior to the others. Unfourtanetly the saw on 111 mm line is too easily stuck in the wood the RangerGrip saw cuts much better. The normal cellidor scaled models are scratches too easily and the springs are not so strong in my opinion however they are still a great choice but in smaller size I would pick an alox model. In a standard 91 mm my favourite the Victorinox Ranger. Bit heavy for everyday but very versatile tool.
