Hey man, just a tip for using a bow, never let go of that string without an arrow in it. (Known as 'dry firing') It can break the bow up pretty bad, if you do draw it back, gradually ease the string back in place if you don't have an intention to fire it. Just.. Archery things that some people don't understand that everyone really should.

Yeah, modern replica armor tends to be heavier than the historical ones. Modern makers have access to industrial sheet metal and don't have time to give the pieces a distal taper (it's extremely time-consuming), so the thickness ends up being the same all-around. The distal taper on historical plate removes a lot of mass while keeping pretty much all the protection. Centergrip shields also had a distal taper, which is why our modern cheap "plywood shields" are ridiculously heavy in comparison, and cannot be properly used for historical norse martial arts.

The helmet was actually a wise choice for using a bow with. "Kettle hats", as they're called, were very popular with crossbowmen and archers in the middle ages.

The bosse on centergrip shields serves many purposes, but punching ain't one. You're supposed to punch with the edge of a centergrip shield, it's much more effective. Roland Warzecha has a bunch of amazing videos on how viking-era shields are supposed to be used; he's the go-to martial expert on viking-era combat.

Hey! I'm brand new to larping. I just finished having my first LARP Mission with my friends who have a LARP group in town. Unfortunately. I didn't have a actual weapon for my character so I had to use some swords off hand for it. I would like to know what kind of materials are good / legal to use for the weapon. For example I am trying to make a staff for my Arcane Acolyte. I was wondering what kind of materials you used for your Hammer. Like the foam and the core. As well as the idea of stores that sell it as well as possible estimated price ranges?
@SachitheCat9 жыл бұрын
+TomtomPersonal I don't LARP (yet) but I am a cosplayer, so I suspect there is a lot of overlap between the two when it comes to weapons/props. First, you want to check all the legal stuff regarding fake weapons. Do this for the LARP, and the place you live. Generally-- realistic guns, and metal swords are a big no. One's sharp and the other's dangerous, and illegal pretty much everywhere but America. Next, figure out what you are realistically able to carry. You might need to measure yourself for this. I'll use myself as an example for this. I wanted to make a large hammer for a costume, and I wanted it to be a little taller than myself. As I'm 5'6" on a good day, I wasn't gonna make it 2m tall or anything. Weight also needs to be considered, cause if you're 50kg soaking wet with all the arm strength of a paper towel, you wouldn't make a 10kg prop. So, after both of these, figure out a budget. Generally how much stuff costs depends on a few things: where you buy, what you buy, where you live, and your ability to use things you have to your advantage. If you live somewhere where coupons are a thing (they aren't where I live), use them. Save your money. This is probably where you want to figure out the design of the thing. Get reference photos, or draw up a plan. In this plan, have materials, measurements, ect. Then, buy materials. Foam is a very safe place to start with swords, and re-painted waterguns (keep the tip orange) are the easiest way to go with guns. This is where cosplay and LARPing diverge, I'd probably use either piping, or a very tall broom handle, and go from there. I'd probably still start with something sturdy, and relatively light (Stormwater piping they sell ones that are around the diameter of a 20c coin). Foam is also really useful, as is paint. Just note: If using foam, you have to use a base coat. It likes to absorb paint. Spray-paint is a great thing to use, however, in some areas, you must be over 18 to buy it. This is pretty much the best help I can give you, so, I'll give you some sources: tutorials.abbott.me.uk/ an acutal larp one. Covers just larp themed stuff cosplaytutorial.com/ Has a large section on props, and some other things
