They always clearly intended to put a Ski-Jump on the front of one of these like the royal navy does to make it an aircraft carrier its size was way to big for just a helicopter platform. But you can also just put combat drones on it with a control room for them if you needed to make it combat capable.

For what it's worth, the Japanese term is more like "Helicopter carrying escort ship." But the US differentiated between "Destroyer" and "Destroyer Escort" ships in WWII. So the Japanese "Escort" ship got translated as "Destroyer" because it was about the same size as US WWII Destroyers, not the Destroyer Escorts.

Some new stuff here that I had not known previously. I was particularly interested to learn that the JMSDF had considered operating an Essex Class CVA, modified for helicopters. Good stuff. As a longtime Japan resident and a former US Navy sailor, I have watched the evolution of both the Hyuga and Izumo class vessels with interest -- knowing full well that they would eventually be CVs in everything but name. In fact, my own personal theory as to why the JASDF decided to go with the F-35 instead of the F-15SE is that the Izumo and Hyuga class ships were designed specifically with the F-35B in mind, albeit without the specific features that would set alarm bells ringing (too loudly) in Beijing. However, in order to get the Bs, they had to buy the As as well. Not that the A is a bad platform, or won't be if they ever get all the bugs worked out, but the F-15SE had numerous advantages. It is reasonably stealthy, Japan has decades of experience with the F-15J and it would be much easier to slot into their current infrastructure, and it would be much cheaper.

I reckon both the Soviets and America (and by extension, the west) believed that Guided Missile is the future the second early Guided Anti Shipping Missile was developed by the US (first one by Germany). The Soviets had more missiles and more missile designs because of a difference in strategy. Technically, the US has more advanced Guided Missiles, since Guided Missiles isn't only Anti-Ship missiles. There's definetly a defense to Guided Missiles other than CIWS (I presume this is what you call "automated mini guns".). In fact, CIWS' were the last defense against anti ship missiles. The best thing to happen to a ship is an anti ballistic missile hitting the said attacking missile. It was ment to be intercepted by a missile before the CIWS fires any rounds.

Calling the Izumo (or the preceding Hyuga Class) a destroyer is like calling the Arleigh Burke a Missile Gunboat. That said, the 27,000 ton Izumo is quite small and light for a modern flat top -- about the same as a Yorktown Class carrier and a tad smaller than an Essex. While is designed to be capable of embarking the F-35B, the Izumo has not (to date) ever embarked fixed wing aircraft.
@Paciat

Destroyers main role was to destroy torpedo motorboats while being seaworthy so it can go with the bigger ships anywhere they go. The most expendable long range ship within the fleet (excluding coastal defense boats).
@dwightlooi
@dwightlooi 3 жыл бұрын
@@Paciat That might be true in WWI. It is not true today and it is not even particularly true in WWII. DDs like the Gearings and Akitzukis are very much mainstay AA screen platforms mounting 6~8 flak batteries and more 25~40mm mounts than you can count with ASW as a secondary role. -- The modern destroyer is taking on the role of the Battleships of yore. They are the primary surface-to-surface platform as well as the most heavily armed, most survivable, surface-to-air assets in a modern navy. There is no longer distinct cruiser class in a modern navy per say; at least not in the classic sense of having an 6"~8" gun, some arbitrary displacement or whatever characteristics. The US Navy calls the Ticonderoga a cruiser when it can just as well call it a destroyer. The same can be said of the Kirov or the Zumwalt. The classic role of the destroyer is now shouldered by ships called "frigates" although there is also no clear distinction between FFGs and DDGs in terms of armament, size or any particular characteristics. Motorboat defense is now the role of the Corvettes, Missile Gunboats, Patrol Boats, Littoral "Clusterfuck" Ships of what have you. -- The Japanese are the only ones calling a purpose built flat top aviation ship a destroyer though. These things have no significant gun or missile armament other than point defense weapons. They don't even carry much ship-board ASW gear like towed arrays. They purpose is to embark and fly aircrafts.

Ever since the end of the WW2, the loudest opponent to any plans to expand Japan's military, or self-defense as they like to put it, capabilities is Japan's own population. @@dagger6467 I spent 5 years (April 13 1993 till April 13 1998 serving on the USS Essex LHD-2 which is a Wasp class) I earned my ESWS pin on board (Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist) which is a general knowledge from the top of mast to the keel, from the bow to the stern, so yeah, I know A LITTLE bit about them. LHD1 to 7 are basically the same ships (minus the Bonhomme Richard, she's being scrapped right now) with the Makin Island LHD-8 having gas turbines instead of steam boilers for her main propulsion. The America class was designed without a well-deck, but larger aviation spaces with LHA-6 and LHA-7 being that flight. LHA-8 will have a smaller well deck due to the Marines needing to be able to carry heavier equipment ashore than can be handled by aviation assets. SO... With neither the Izumo or America class having a well deck they are closer to each other than the Wasp class and Izumo. Oh.. the flight deck isn't 140 ft wide, that's the overall width from the edge of the port elevator to the starboard elevator. The flight deck itself is about 106 ft wide (the beam of the ship) and to go through the Panama Canal, they fold the elevators and remove the catwalks.

I don’t agree with your contention the Izumo class isn’t the equal to the Russian or Chinese carriers. When loaded with F-35s and Osprey they will be superior. The F-35 is a far superior aircraft than what is flying from the Russian or the first two Chinese carries. It more than makes up for the fact the Japanese carriers are smaller in size. That probably won’t be the case when China has their third carrier up and operational but that could be up to a decade from now.

Nick the Chinese will be christening their third carrier this year or next. However just like with American carriers it takes 3-4 years to fit out and do the work ups before it’s commissioned. Even then a new class will often take another couple of years before it’s fully up to speed. Conventional wisdom is it will take China upward of a decade to get carrier 3 into full service. They have no experience with a carrier this big or complex.

There is another need for Izumo and Kaga to install the F-35B If a stealth aircraft arrives during island defense, Okinawa's AWACS will be forced to retreat, and at the same time there is a risk that the defense line of the fighter unit performing HAVCAP will be lowered. For this reason, the Ministry of Defense may carry out fleet air defense by Fast-FAC using the CEC of the Aegis ship and F-35B in order to prevent the situation where air power cannot be used for the operation to recapture the remote islands by the JMSDF. , And is expected by military experts. from Japanese military fan.
