I've had a similar experience, lol. You got super lucky, looked like your bow was about it plow straight into the rocks at the end!!!

It's rocky here at the Oregon coast. Been in that situation many times; it seems like generally it's the suck before the wave that sets up trouble. Obviously the helmet should have been worn, but the situation looked more awkward than dangerous, and these misadventures are how we all get experience. These slots are always a bit of Russian roulette to enter. I often wait for the bigger waves to go through before entering, but that did look temptingly tame. I may have bitten on that as well.

This was me yesterday near Land's End UK! Even the yellow kayak, but had my helmet on. Glad it's not just me! The comment that says it's the suck first that sets up trouble is 100% accurate! Edit: I thought it was good to practice my wet exit 😁.

Tempting to just go for it. Sitting and watching a few cycles is better.

Long channel, plenty of time to turn into something else. My first intro to big wave rock kayaking was at Allihies with friends on a building project. We paddled out through the channels, when the sea suddenly dropped 6 feet and the channel became raging rapids down to a dunking at the bottom. Never forget that moment. It’s surprising how survivable it can be though.

So did you roll or wet exit 🤔 after that?

A little bit more white water bracing practice maybe? It's easy to get caught out!

Wear a helmet it's really not that bad. I understand that nothing went wrong here, but something definitely could have and the point of helmets is to protect you if something does go wrong

@offshorekayak2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Long period swell that I didn’t see coming. Water had been very flat until I entered the gap. Then swell hit, sucked the water out and a large wave behind me. The bottom of my hull was just barely scraping the rock to my right as I surfed forward. I was just lucky that as I fell over there were no rocks underneath me to hit my head on. If there were, it would have been lights out.

Rolled up. My GoPro was on the GoPro-brand elastic headband so it came off and was dragged behind me for a while after I had rolled.

Learn how to brace
@offshorekayak2 жыл бұрын
Brace against what? The rocks with a $500 carbon fiber paddle? Thanks, no thanks couch ranger. Also maybe check out another one of my videos and then see if I know how to brace.
@laurin94072 жыл бұрын
@@offshorekayak maybe I got a different perspective on this as a white water kayaker, but if I have to decide between hitting a rock to brace, and the risk to hit my head, I'm choosing the first one every time.
@offshorekayak2 жыл бұрын
@@laurin9407 I mostly agree, but in the moment it’s not always that simple. You can actually see me begin to brace, but I’m also not wanting to push my hull further against the rocks than it already is. This is a glass boat not plastic. I’m trying to save it and my paddle. Yes… I’m choosing to save my gear and taking that risk in this case. Once I lost some forward speed I’m out of the brace position and beginning to fall over. I suppose bracing at that point would have been possible, but difficult. The whole thing unfolds in seconds and I’m only so fast. There isn’t much preplanning you can do either. No scouting/walking the hazards from the shore. If you did it may not matter, the sea creates an endless variety of wave sizes and shapes; current direction changes at least twice a day. You’re exploring, not running a river with named obstacles.
