I have been a knife collector for many years, which may account for my never NOT wearing a sgian dubh when I wear a kilt. True, as knives go, it's more of a letter opener. I do normally have some other knife on me, either in a belt sheath or in a utilikilt pocket or in my sporran.

Cold Steel offers a knife called Secret Edge, weighs 3.2 oz. It's great for EDC in a hose top.

Ohhh... nice. I'm not sure how easy that would be to deploy if needed (the plastic/kydex sheath with the button release), but I like that it's a real knife. It's not expensive, so I think I'll give one a try 👍

EDC are a Spyderco Wave and a black Swiss Army Executive; only the Swiss Army is carried in a sporran. Have seen the Marine tartan worn with a miniature K-Bar which seems appropriate.

Now THAT K-bar would be cool! I have a smaller one I keep in a go-bag so I have a fixed-blade if needed, but it's still over 9".

I have an officer’s Sgian Dubh that has a functional edge bottle opener and corkscrew, and has a thistle badge on it. Looks good and is useful.

My edc is a Camillus Cutlery folder with a partially serrated blade. I've used to cut several different things from bailing twine to zip ties. As a volunteer firefighter, I carry a knife in case I need to use it, I also carry a small glass breaker tool with a seat belt cutter on the bottom side. I carry the same knife in my sporran while I'm at the Central NY Scottish Games in Liverpool, NY and at the Niagara Celtic Heritage Festival in Lockport, NY. I don't have a Sgian Dubh yet but I have been looking at different styles of them and I plan to get one soon to go with my kilt and sporran.

I have a folding knife clipped on the inside edge of my sporran for "regular use" (as a piper that's usually cutting hemp or gaffer tape). I do have a sgian brew to put in my hose. It's mostly for show, but comes in handy back at the band tent after competitions.

I always carry a Swiss Army knife in the sporran because they’re surprisingly handy. For dress use where a sgian dubh is appropriate I’ve got a Cold Steel Secret Edge that works really well.

I use a Buck sgian dubh discontinued now. When I do wear kilt hose, I find it quicker to access that than most folding knives. But I don’t often wear kilt hose daily. Working, I get way too hot. So a folding clip blade on a pocket of my Utilikilts is my daily and gets used every day mostly for utility work.

I have a couple of Cold Steel Sgian Dubh that I use, the Culloden and the Mini Culloden. They look like a traditional SD, but are made with modern materials. Very useable. They're long discontinued, but you can still pick them up on the secondary market. Additionally, I tend to carry a SAK Pioneer X in my sporran.

I mostly wear utility kilts with pockets, so a Victorinox One Hand Trekker works well, either in the pocket or on a carabiner in the belt loop. For kilt hose, I have a Puma Mule Deer Hunter fixed blade with flat scales in white bone, and it lays close to my calf.

Functional sgian dubh! Poured form blade from 'Track of The Wolf'. I mounted it on a stag horn. Has a nice pistol grip shaped handle. Kinda like a flintlock pistol. Also made a leather sheath that stays secure in my plains moccasin boots.

Question for the community, I am a Freemason and going kilted with PC for my installation. What would be an appropriate hat for the ceremony
@Wes_of_the_Woods6 ай бұрын
In my pocket, I keep a Mora Eldris. The blade is shorter and wider than a sgian dubh and has a wicked sharp scandi grind. I use it for everything from dressing a deer to opening boxes. I recently made up a San Mai sgian dubh blade which I'll furnish with bog oak and a moss agate pommel. If the edge is good, it'll be a daily as well.

I am a bit of a knife guy, so I have a nice-looking, fully-functional sgian dubh. One advantage of a purpose-made sgian dubh: it's designed to lay very flat against my leg. I typically wear kilt hose, even with somewhat casual outfits, because it allows me to carry the sgian dubh. If I'm wearing a *very casual* outfit, I'll skip the kilt hose, leave the sgian dubh at home, and clip my everyday pocket knife onto my kilt somewhere. (When I'm wearing nicer Saxon wear, I carry a much nicer pocket knife.) Basically, the sgian dubh replaces the pocket knife, so it gets used as often as I would use the pocket knife. Maybe a couple times per day.

EDC, I carry a Kershaw assisted opening folder (I have a half dozen of these, in slightly different blade lengths, that I rotate through). I usually clip it to my hip strap on the kilt, with the knife on the inside of the strap to help conceal it a little. A Kel-Tec P380 in a pocket holster in the sporran. I also have at least one spare magazine in with it. I'd rather carry my Taurus G3C in 9mm or my Makarov PM in 9x18mm, but I have yet to figure out a concealed carry method for the kilt. Down here in Florida, it's too hot to wear a jacket or even a waistcoat 90 percent of the time. My thighs are too thick for a thigh holster, and the "thunderwear" type would have way too much hardware right in front of my junk (pistol + sporran). If anyone out there has discovered a practical solution to carrying a decent sized compact pistol while kilted, please let me know! Other EDC stuff: just the usual, phone, keys, cash clip with ID, CWL, debit card. I also carry a 1928 Irish Free State silver coin that has a face value of 2 shillings and 6 pence in my sporran. I'm more Irish than Scottish, so the Irish coin speaks to me.

When kilted, I tuck my Benchmade Griptilian with tanto blade in the front apron. In my sporran, I carry a G42 and my shield which is about all that will fit. As for the sock knife, I carry my EIII Obi-Wan .45 scale lightsaber; just wish I could get that to work!

What kind of knife would be appropriate for ladieswear? The leatherman isn’t the most fashionable alternative I can imagine.

Look at the Devils Edge Bollock Dagger and tell me you don't want to wear that. I've never seen a bollock dagger look so classy. Subtle, too! Something to consider is if you don't just have Scottish heritage, but Scythian heritage as well. I'm of the seed of Alpin so I claim descent from Hercules! Whoo hoo! Hercules, Hercules, Hercules!!! Wait a minute, it turns out Hercules was a Danite Hebrew named Samson. A Jew. This means Odin, father of a fat redhead named Thor, founder of the Svear tribe, was a Jew as well. The Yngling Saga records his migration from greater Scythia to Scandinavia. What this exposition means is that the bollocks dagger is a type of akinaces, the same sword used by the Assyrians, early Persians, Hebrews, Spartans, etc. Oh yea, to get your head screwed on right, this means the Spartans were Jews. Alexander the Great was a Jew. When he fought Porus in India, he was fighting against royalty descended from Lord Krishna... who was also Hercules. Porus was in the same tribe as Alexander, I believe. Isn't heritage fascinating? Ba'ath Mac Magog is an unbelievably obvious lie, Scythia did not exist at the time of Babel, and to claim Gaelic heritage is also claiming Jewish heritage. Hercules was Samson. The Scottish are in the same tribe as the Danish, English of Anglish heritage, Swedish of Svear heritage, and the Irish are also in the tribe of Dan. Oh and the explanation as to why the Trojan War of legend wasn't written about until 400 years later is that IT DIDN'T HAPPEN until about 400 years later, Achilles is also a Jew in my tribe. The Trojan war couldn't have happened before Scythia existed. Examine the archaeological record for Hercules, go ahead. The real Scots are lost Hebrews. I expose this cluster fuck as the result of an extensive ages long cover up simply and solely because the rich and powerful didn't want to give up pork. This has to be why. Scottish, Irish, and Scythian pastoral cultures were traditionally swine free.
