I was born in 1947, At Christmas and at my birthday as I grew up I frequently was given white knit summer gloves or cotton gloves every year as well as new slips. My mother scrubbed my white gloves by hand because I would touch things with my fingers. My mother wore gloves to church, shopping and when we went to a larger city. She had brown, tan, black and white gloves, so,e leather some cotton. She always had a hat and often her shoes and purses were bought as a set. My mother looked so feminine and like a lady. I looked up to her and wanted to be like her. Love the fifty's clothing, style.

I love vintage-style dressy gloves (shorter, not the opera length), but I have very large hands and over several decades have only been able to find a couple pairs of stretchy vintage gloves that I could squeeze into. Unfortunately, they weren't the best condition or really useful colors, but I bought them anyway just because. As King Lear implored, "O, reason not the need." I eventually gave up looking and forgot about my old love until I saw this video. With the link you provided to the Dents Company's plain white cotton gloves that come in larger sizes, I started to think that with a bottle of Rit dye, a little bit of embroidery and some delicate beading, I just may, finally, have my heart's desire. Thank you.

Well done. Thank you. Since I was born in 1946, I wore gloves from toddler age until they were pretty much not available in regular stores anymore. Sure wish I still had all the gloves I wore, but I wore them out. My favorites were the kid gloves I wore in the 1960s. Your videos are wonderful. Gloria

I remember having to wear gloves every time I wore a dress my grandmother insisted I also wore my short white gloves. They also had a white pearl at the wrist of each glove. I was teased a little bit by the other girls for wearing them to church on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursdays, yes 3 times per week...

I have bought a pair of 32cm (11.inch) long gloves from eBay. The gloves are 60 years old and have been worn by a gentlewoman before, and are made of absolutely soft and extremely tender goat leather! Touching my gloves make you hear angels sing: I have never touched such a soft leather before, and now I own a pair of these super fine gloves made of 100% leather myself

Thank you, once again very informative! If I may say about Dents gloves- yes they are expensive but you're buying a piece of history as they are one of Britains oldest fashion manufacturers- they were established in 1777. They have a Royal warrant and have been suppliers to the British royal family...and they're beautifully soft and well made gloves. Each pair is hand made. No, I don't work for them, just have a pair and love them :) so yes expensive, but I got mine as a Christmas gift...yay :)

Thank you! I would still love to have some Dents gloves certainly, but with the additional cost of international shipping to the US I think I'll wait until I'm back in England again sometime to invest in a pair! Indeed I wish they were more popular so Dents and others would make more styles of dress gloves again!

I've always loved the more "vintage" look but for a variety of reasons felt I could not dress this way. I am (57) retired and I've decided to dress the way I want! I just won an online auction of well over 50 vintage handkerchiefs and at least 15 pairs of gloves!! Only 3 pair do not fit ( one pair leather opera gloves)so I will sell those online, but for $39 I think I hit the jackpot! Love, love, love your channel! You are very inspiring!!!

Just found you and really enjoy your style! What I say to the questions and comments from people regarding my style....."The QUEEN is my fashion icon"....ha. I often wear a queenly silk head scarf and gloves....get comments all the time. "Why so formal? Um, what's with the scarf (jewelry, gloves, straw bag, bright lipstick.....blah, blah, blah)". I don't care what they say. I love clothes (and jewelry, gloves, straw bags, bright lipstick......) !!! Not all comments are bad. In fact, most women respond very nicely to my style and I get alot of compliments. I also hear often, "I could never dress like that". I always say "Why not?! Do what makes you happy!" I look forward to more collection videos from you! Really having fun watching....thanks!!!

I am working my way through your videos and was excited to see your info on gloves. I have small hands for my frame and height, and gloves are some of the only vintage items that fit me consistently, so I've build a bit of a collection. I've gotten my gloves in the scarf section at thrift stores, and in estate auctions. Since they likely all belonged to one person, the whole lot is usually the same size, which can be good or bad depending. The last lot I picked up had that distinct "been in a box for 30 years" smell, and several of the white pairs were dingy. Someone suggested that I put them on to give them a good scrub, and it works really nicely to get stubborn spots out - just like washing your hands! White bar soap, while slightly harsher than modern detergent, is great vintage way to clean clothing items that are stained like gloves, or the dreaded ring around the collar.

Great video. I love wearing gloves and have a large collection, even though I don't dress "vintage". I'm a reseller and was lucky enough to find a pair of vintage Yves Saint Laurent black suede gloves with gold metal embellishments in mint unworn condition. They were purchased by a director at Dents for the Fashion Museum, Bath. It was hard to let them go as they were gorgeous, but I'm so thrilled that they are now part of an incredible collection of vintage fashion.

I came across this video by accident and wow am I glad I did!! I have a passion for hats, gloves and jewelry, accessories. I have about 10/12 pairs of gloves, shorties, gauntlet and opera in that mix. I loved your glove drawers! That is a great idea. Also, thank you for referring to Etsy for gloves. For some reason that did not occur to me, duh...I have to wear gloves all of the time due to a medical condition. I am basically allergic to the sun and fluorescent lighting. So I figure I might as well wear the gloves I like! For in the house, I wear shorties with long sleeves and the finger tips are cut off, long length for shorter sleeves, with the tips cut off. Outside, I wear the length that will cover the most skin with tips intact. I have either black or white in each length and a purple pair to go with a purple coat and hat I have for Winter. A certain color of purple is my favorite, so whenever I see an accessory in that color, I buy it! So glad I found this video! I am very happy to find someone else who likes gloves too. I do get noticed and looked at, but the comments have always been positive. I'm sorry you have had to endure rude comments and disapproving looks. You'll never get that from me. I'll be the one who says, "You Go Girl!!"

I love wearing leather gloves and have an interest in vintage accessories. May I ask if you have ever done a video on the subject of "what women had in their wardrobe closets in the 1940's" ? I am looking into the uniqueness of women who owned fewer clothes with vintage style but used them in both a practical and expressive, creative way with accessories such as gloves and hats. Please do let me know if you have made such a video or if you plan on making one in the future. Thank you.

I'm afraid I have never done a breakdown of what an average woman's wardrobe would have looked like in the 1940's, I can only imagine it was far far smaller than say...mine eek! Some articles on the subject do exist, glamourdaze.com/2010/08/1940s-fashion-young-womans-wardrobe.html but alas I have no plans for such a video myself! To me it seems something that would be very specific to the weather in the place one lives, and dependent on one's job/daily activities.

Regarding glove blockers, there are quite a few options on etsy, most wooden, as they're still used within the knitting community as knits look much better if properly blocked after washing. The yellow gloves you showed are definitely knit. One way to tell the difference between knit and crochet is that knit tends to be rather stretchy whereas crochet isn't very stretchy and more stable. Thank you for such a wonderful and informative video! 💜

I looove the crocheted style of gloves the most. So elegant and dainty despite me being a walking calamity! I have a pair of short stretch velvet leopard gloves I got at a flea market and I wear them to death during the holidays. Leopard print is a neutral as far as I’m concerned. On a side note, I ended up buying some sheer polka dot black gloves for my bridesmaids last year and oddly enough they were from a Danish goth brand called ReStyle. They had some very cute options!

Great vid, lovely to see your collection. "I swear and trip over things', jolly good :) I spent most evenings in the first half of the 1980's wearing long black satin gloves, with rings worn outside, the while chain smoking sobranie gold without removing the gloves. Shocking, I know. Gloves and sobranies both now things of the past. I have a few pairs of leather gloves for winter but I feel a touch too costumed in summer or evening gloves these days. Those pretty lemon yellow gloves are knitted, not crochet.

So many lovely gloves! I rarely wear any of my vintage gloves but I always love seeing how other people style theirs. You have quite the impressive collection! PS: I don’t know if anyone has answered your query yet, but to this knitter’s eye, the yellow gloves appear to be knit. It’s a bit hard to tell from the footage but they may possibly be a feather and fan stitch pattern.

I know some people hate or distrust shopping on Aliexpress, but if you didn't know yet: Aliexpress also has very legit, decent shops/boutiques on its platform. I even found out that all the gloves that US modern vintage brand "Unique Vintage" sells are from there. And as you might have guessed yourself: they are at least 3x as expensive there. I found gorgeous elbow length real leather gloves with buttons, a simple long set, and two other leather short ones in green and red, 2 lace ones - one will always get me compliments and now I can't find them anymore - and woollen gloves that look appropriate, especially with a vintage coat (though I also have leather and suede ones to go with them). I've also bought gloves that are obviously polyester/4 way stretch that probably weren't available in the 40s/50s, but they would fit my aesthetics and look. Just search Vintage gloves or the type glove you're looking for in Aliexpress and you can seek the better looking ones. The only thing that sometimes annoyed me were the smartphone screen index finger thingy in the glove. Which isn't exactly pretty. But they don't all have that. I mostly avoid these to be honest. You can get gloves as cheap as 4-5 euro and obviously closer to €20 or more if you're looking for elbow length leather gloves. But that might still be cheaper than the actual Vintage ones (for me at least, but that's because I still haven't found Dutch sellers and that means that besides the Etsy price I also pay Royal Mail shipping from the UK or worse, shipping from the US! So for me the difference is huge and therefore my love for vintage can be more easily surpassed by my love for paying rent 😏😂).

Thank you Ayana! I have found as long as the gloves are sized that they have never been off to the point that they don't fit me when shopping online, but of course not all sellers list the sizes. When I find a pair online I'd really love to add to my collection but I'm afraid about the size, I always just message the seller to confirm the measurement across the palm for my own peace of mind in clicking "buy now"! Perhaps the antique shops around your area are just more fruitful than mine, as I only rarely come across gloves at all let alone in my size!

For some reason I didn’t know that method of measuring your hand to find your size. (You’d think it would be self explanatory) But when I was starting out with vintage I was at a vintage clothing store looking around and saw some cute leather-y grown short gloves, so I tried them on. And they got perfectly! To be fair I’m very small so my size is 6-1/2 or 7. But I was so shocked because modern gloves are always too big (unless they’re kids) But yeah I definitely got them because they were cute, they fit, and they were half off so they were only $6! 😊👌🏻💙

Like you, I’m a size 7 3/4 glove. I’ve recently been wearing gloves to protect my hands from sun damage. It’s not easy to find cotton gloves to fit. Hats are another issue. Everyone in my family has giant heads so adorable hats never fit, and modern hats rarely come in various sizes. I end up with a man’s extra large for sun protection. I may have to take a page from your book and make my own hats! I don’t think I could make gloves, with their fiddly bits. ☺️

TheClosetHistorian Ah true! That’s probably, what attracted me to the idea. I love fiddly, detailed work. I always get terribly intimidated by projects, that require large amounts of fabric, on the other hand. I feel more in control with tiny pieces, I can all line up in front of me.

I'm sorry to say I do not! The only super long gloves I have are the very stretchy modern costume kind, and I don't get to wear them often enough to have developed any tricks. The one thing I could think of would to be to use some of that double sided dress sticky tape they have for necklines these days and use some at the top of the glove to give it a bit more hold perhaps? No idea if that would work!

Thank you Lele! It is certainly very vintage appropriate to make your own gloves, and there are definitely vintage sewing patterns for them from the 40's and 50's, as well as many crochet and knitting patterns too. I have never tried making any myself as I fear it would be a frustrating project for me!

I wonder if it's considered a faux pas to dye vintage gloves, in principle or value, because I have been super tempted to just do it. I'm a 7 1/2 to 8 but have had little luck with finding pretty, colorful gloves in my size past the basics. I am CRAVING a pair in forest green or deep red but so far have found none :'( Oh, curse you fiendish, small-handed people of the past!!!
@TheClosetHistorian
@TheClosetHistorian 5 жыл бұрын
Personally I think it is totally fine to buy white/ivory gloves in your size and dye them. There are many dozens of pairs of white gloves for every pair of colored ones out there it seems, and giving old gloves new life in your wardrobe where they will get years of use and love seems very reasonable to me!

How did I end up here? I'm not into vintage (or clothes in general), but I am into leather gloves - scary google strikes again... Anyway, nice video. But you didn't cover the two things I am most interested in: how to care for vintage leather gloves, and long gloves with buttons. Vintage leather is a pain, and I've (temporarily?) given up on all my inherited gloves. They seem to shrink and dry out when not worn regularly. And cleaning them is impossible. Old household manuals talk about washing them in gasoline or mineral spirits, but I haven't seen good results from that. Are you - and everyone commenting - from warm climates? Here in Scandinavia there's loads of modern gloves for sale, and oodles of them are very neutrally styled and would definitely work with almost anything from the 20th century. I mostly only look at leather, but I see fabric too in many, many colours. But gloves are not cheap! Especially not well fitting high quality leather gloves. Anything under ~40ish bucks is a bargain. So I'm always glove-hunting. Those yellow gloves are knit, not crochet. Knitting gloves is a fiddly business. I admire my grandmother's patience in knitting herself patterned camelhair gloves every other year or so (and she wasn't even much for knitting in general). About cotton and washing: when washing cotton I find stretching/growing to be much more of a problem than shrinking.

Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have any experience with washing leather gloves, or with long gloves with buttons myself. Here in the US it is very rare to see anything but winter gloves for sale, I have never once seen cloth or vintage style gloves for sale in any modern store here. It does seem glove shops are more common in Europe and the UK compared to the US!

The yellow gloves at 06:45 are knit, not crochet. There are certainly people in the knitting community today who could re-create such a glove. I love gloves and have a huge collection. The ones that belonged to my granny have hand-embroidered flowers or beading. Those that came from my Parisian friend's mother are thin and supple leathers dyed in unusual colors like peach or powder blue. Vintage jewelry doesn't usually fit under these slender numbers. What's a girl to do?

How about for a wedding, do you put the ring on top of the gloves or take them off? I am planning to wear them for my wedding
@TheClosetHistorian
@TheClosetHistorian 4 жыл бұрын
I am sure there is probably further official etiquette on the exact 'when they get taken off' moment, but rings never go over gloves, and indeed the ring would have to be too large in order to fit over them, so it's just not a good idea in general. In such a situation, if long gloves are desired, I would think gloves that button at the wrist are the best solution, as one could tuck the hand part of the glove away (up into the rest of the glove) for the ring portion of the ceremony and then let it back down afterwards. This was done for smoking and eating with this style of glove anyway. If short gloves, I would think they are just removed, perhaps handed to a maid of honor when the bouquet is handed over, or just before the ring exchange and then taken back afterwards. I would try searching "bridal glove etiquette" specifically for the details, as alas I have never been married myself ;) Long gloves with buttons like these www.etsy.com/listing/807149270/size-7-vintage-nylon-mid-bicep-opera-22?ref=shop_home_active_79 would probably be my solution.

Very interesting video! I’m curious how you manage day to day activities while wearing gloves: do they make the car steering wheel harder to grip? do grocery items slip out of your hand? is it difficult to handle bills and coins with gloved hands?
@TheClosetHistorian
@TheClosetHistorian 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Nancy! The very unglamourous answer is that I do not wear my gloves on the daily. Mostly when I leave the house it is to go to my day job where I wear a uniform and work in production with my hands all day, so gloves would be out of the question. When I do wear my gloves out and about, I do so only when I don't have to be touching lots of things, mostly because I don't not want to get my gloves dirty and have to be washing them all the time. So I'll wear them while walking around an antiques fair for example, but take them off and store them away when I want to actually rummage through things since my hands are more easily washed than my gloves. Pretty much opposite to the reason ladies wore them "back in the day" (to keep their hands covered/clean) I wear mine only for the look and do my very best to not get them dirty!
