I'm not trying to start a quarrel here, but I think samurai armor just looks cooler and more intimidating than European armor in general. Although gothic armor is still pretty intimidating and white armor looks very ornate and elegant.
@butsmash6 жыл бұрын
I don't know man, it's pretty intimidating when someone can shrug off pretty much anything short of a cannon or lance thrust. An angry armored lobster with a nice large halberd or two handed sword that has a versatile guard is pretty scary. Imagine how cool it will look when you're in a grapple and receive the wrong end of what is essentially an elegant shiv, right into the nice soft fabric of your under arms. Europeans also had a lot of decorative helmets, some battle worthy, and others just best kept at home. But seeing as an entire continent could erupt into chaos at any moment, I don't think they wanted to get too fancy. I LOVE Japanese armors though, I want an angry Oni armor.

Firmly believe that western and near eastern armor didn't really start becoming a thing of sheer beauty until the 1400s. From Islamic Baydah to european gothic plate, to the luxurious appearance of brigandines. But in Japan (and China) armor has always been one part protection, one part art. Even going back to the oldest O-Yoroi, they were things that held a sense of awe to them. It shows the long standing emphasis in Asian military tradition on waging war on a psychological level, even while on the battlefield. You fear a knight because you know you cannot hurt him. You fear a samurai because you know how much he can hurt you. This thought process is written in their armor.

It is heartworming how something so organic as that cloth sash is combined with something so inhuman and metallic as armour. Also, thats one fine woman you got there. A woman helping a man put on his armour was something very special to watch. It felt right and proper somehow. Even if that was not the way it was done originally. Maybe, war on a village level, where each family sent out its man, is human war, war that we are made for. And a woman puttting on a mans armour ties in to that ancestral memory as it were. It just felt good to watch it.

I love history and I'm currently getting into armor, I have a question since I'm pretty much a noob at this topic, did the samurai menpo was worn at all times during day combat?
@AnthonySforza8 жыл бұрын
You probably got an answer to this by now, but on the off chance you hadn't... yes and no. Yes they wore it, but no, not so much as many people think they did. A lot of Mempo actually had detachable noses. So when you pull that of it takes the moustache and top of the lip with it. So it then comes down along the sides of the face and under the chin. The advantage to this is that for some, it's easier to see. Also, not sure if you've ever worn one, but it's much easier to breathe that way, as well. It's one thing to think "Oh yes, I'm just wearing a mask" but it's hard metal, right up in your face. Where your breath gets stale and condensates, not to mention the sweat. I read in a book about ten years ago that some of the old ones actually had a small hole in the bottom of the chin to let the sweat pour out of.

Andres Dominguez No worries. Even as recent as a couple to three years ago, I too was once wondering this. There's actually been a LOT of information to come out in the last two, two and a half years. This new wave has not only shed light on things not covered, but also kind of disproved a lot of things we too for granted and have been told over and over again. I mean, when you have the worlds leading researcher on such a subject, printing a retraction on a lot of his own research... that definitely says a lot.

***** SOrry, i see my answer was quite lackluster. If you are in the dark or in low lighted areas your eyes are mostly reacting to movements and to known shapes. The skin on the face reflects light pretty good, even in low lighted areas and because of the shape of a face you would recognise someone in the dark much faster, that is also the reason why soldiers are painting the dark parts of their face brighter,the bright parts darker and blur the lines

These days, when I look at a samurai armor, the only thing that goes through my head is how it is inferior in every possible way to the European armor. I used to have a ton of admiration for samurai, and I even believed it when they bragged that they had superior technique and that katanas were the ultimate sword. But let's break it down: When European's started trade with Japan, guns were around, so Europeans stopped using armor, because the guns made armor useless. But during the same period, Japanese still used armor and swords. If the Europeans would have dusted off their knights armors, they could have invaded Japan. - A Katana is a slashing weapon. Any knight armor of the 15th century + is immune to slashing. - The samurai armor has a large portion of the face open, namely the eyes and mouth. The European armor had little gaps to see. there is no way a samurai could fit his spear or sword in those gaps, but the european knight is used to trying to pierce small openings in armors. - The hands of a samurai are not protected with armor and a katana has no guard. The samurai would loose all their fingers in no time. - there is an argument that samurai archers were amazing... Well British peasant were forced by law to train archery weekly. This meant that the average Brit had years of archery experience behind his belt. And I suspect that an arrow from a Brit long bow would pierce strait through that Japanese armor (dont quote me on that, I dont think anyone ever did any experiments to test that) I believe that Japan's biggest military advantage was to be an island situated in a part of the world where storms are a frequent thing. Isolation allow Japan to survive.
