What a blessing, we are apparently getting a TS tune not before recorded. My memory is poor for numbers, but I think Pops Coffee has documented nearly 400 individual tunes for this band. And I think I recall hearing that King Oliver numbers are often tricky. Shaye cues her buddies more than usual, suggesting that this piece is challenging and new for the band. As always, thanks James!

Many thanks, James, for travelling there to capture this première performance for us. As one who likes to look under the bonnet, here's what I think I find: 00:03 INTRODUCTION - 4 bars establishing the key as A flat 00:09 THEME A - 16 bars in A flat 00:31 THEME B -16 bars in A flat, very much on a repeated V - I chord pattern, with Barnabus taking the mini-breaks on some of the even-numbered bars 00:53 THEME B - Craig improvising over the 16 bars 01:15 THEME A - we're back (on a head signal from Shaye) to the first melody 01:38 BRIDGE - again, on a signal from Shaye, we proceed to the 4-bar link passage 01:43 THEME C - led by Barnabus on trombone, a new theme still in A flat, starting with a curious 2-bar 'break', with another on bars 9 and 10 02:05 THEME C - Shaye's turn, also featuring the 2-bar break at the start and in bars 9 and 10 02:27 THEME C - ensemble, 16 bars, but this time with a break taken by Craig on Bars 7 and 8 02:50 THEME C - featuring Todd, but with Robin taking the breaks this time on Bars 1,2, 9 and 10 03:11 THEME C - featuring Jason and including those breaks 03:32 THEME C - ensemble, with Robin taking a break on bars 7 and 8 03:53 THEME C - ensemble, with clarinet, trombone and cornet sharing the break at bars 7 and 8 04:15 CODA - two bars Note that THEME C lends itself to 2-bar breaks on bars 1,2 9 and 10 (such as were played in the 1923 King Oliver recording); but it also lends itself to a more conventional 2-bar break on bars 7 and 8, as three times here (not done in the Oliver recording). Unusually, there are no key changes in this rag.

Shaye (when on piano) used to play it with Norbert Susemihl; but I think it's new to Tuba Skinny. The fact that Shaye considers it necessary to give so many signals suggests that it is still bedding in.

Thanks friend for sharing it, greetings from Spain. I love this kind of music, I have been following them for a long time. These styles of music are not appreciated here, there are very few people who value these styles. Since I was about 8 years old I have loved these styles, such as: jazz, dixie, ragtime, gipsi jazz, I have always been the weirdo of my friends, today at 43 years old, I am even weirder because I still like them. Every day I need to listen to this music, my daughters listen to them, especially the little 7-year-old who already knows jazz songs that few know how to distinguish.

Fernando, I'm such a weirdo too! I was 14 when this kind of music grabbed me ... but now I'm 72 and it's still no better ... so don't worry !! Especially since Tuba Skinny has delighted us all with so much inspiration, with so much soul for this music and with such outstanding and talented professionalism ... and we thanks to the technology and people like James, who thankfully make it available to us and we can practically participate "live" in it ... it got "much worse with the addiction" - practically hopeless ... ;-) ... ! @@alfred_artpix9896 You are very right. Excuse my translation, I know little English and the translator helped me a lot. When I was 16 years old I already listened to Cahrlie Parker, I studied saxophone and in these years I have been learning rare instruments. Everyone called me crazy to listen to styles like those of Tuba Skinny, but it helped me a lot to get out of what we listen to in Spain, which is usually a lot of Latin music and styles typical of our land. I listen to a lot of music of all styles, but what catches me is jazz, skinny tuba and styles that are not heard so much around here. I have learned to play many instruments on my own and it is thanks to groups of listeners or people who upload their recordings, I cannot resist trying new things and Tuba Skinny I have to listen to it at least once a day to make me happy. I love this music. Thanks as he says to James, I can hear a style that always caught me, I go back to my 16 years. Thank you for your advice and for your time, I greet you from Asturias / Spain. I love his joy and humor

Think yourself lucky this was not a classical concert. If one of the soloists broke a string, the performance would stop until the string was fixed, which could involve the player disappearing offstage to fix it; then it would restart from the nearest convenient place prior to where it stopped.

It's not Tuba Slinny's fault: for once, Armstrong-Oliver's song isn't exceptional (composition). In fact, I didn't even remember it. The Latins said: "Quanquan dormitat Homerus", that is, once in a while even Homer fell asleep.
@PopsCoffee
@PopsCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
'Quanquan'? Eh? I think you will find Horace's actual words were 'quandoque bonus dormitat Homerus'.
