It’s unbelievable that the city of New Orleans don’t recognize that they they have a world renowned band playing for free on one of their streets. If they had any sense they would close the street to traffic and rename it Tuba Skinny Boulevard!

Shaye's ''Wow what a feeling'' comment really captured the moment.That look of joy on her face says it all. Two years is a long time to be away from what you love to do. Tuba Skinny started out and have continued as street performers. It's what they enjoy and so nice to see them back in their element....Kudos to Mr.Sterling for capturing this moment. @@nedanother9382 What Brenda is referring to is that the city closed down Royal Street to performers over two years ago and this was the band's first time back on the street since then.

@@carlomezzatesta4659 It was because the city, which for the past 50 years has had an ordinance designating Royal Street as a pedestrian mall during most daylight hours, had allowed vehicular traffic instead. This initially happened before Covid when the Hard Rock Hotel nearby collapsed causing the street around it to be closed. After the hotel debris was cleared and the street around it reopened the city refused to return Royal St. to its former status. The bands organized a protest on this day by playing in the street. The publicity then caused the city to reinstate the pedestrian mall.

Thanks very much, James. It's amazing to think they have been playing this very enjoyable tune for about three and a half years, though they haven't yet found a place for it on an Album. When Clarence Williams recorded it with his band - 'The Clarence Williams Jazz Kings' - in New York on 28 May 1929, Williams himself was on piano. He had nobody playing a banjo or guitar. Tuba Skinny as usual show great respect for the original. For example, after the Introduction, Shaye and Craig (from 00:12 to 00:52) take a turn each at playing the melody while the other plays the catchy response phrases, just as Ed Allen and Arville Harris did in the 1929 recording. Also, like Clarence Williams, Tuba Skinny play the tune in the key of F, until the introduction of the new 16-bar theme (01:52) where they switch to B flat. There are some impressive improvisations on this B flat theme - notably Shaye's at 02:52. What a super Coda, too (04:30 - 04:48): you don't find that on the Clarence Williams original. What an exemplary performance all round.

Agreed. As they always do, they constantly refine a tune the longer they play it. That's why I never tire hearing this band. Each performance is fresh no matter how many times they have played a song.

this superior performance, is why they are going to Newport Jazz Festival. Trad Jazz played right and real professional. And New Orleans City politicians don't want them there on Royal Street. What an ignorant self serving paranoid policy, a temporary policy they refuse to rescind, and put therefore musicians out of business and turn the French Quarter into a shopping mall with crowded unnecessary cart traffic. In the city best known for it's music throughout the world. Sign the petition they have. Send the mayor e-mails. to the eyes and ears fo the world Tuba Skinny, and the other groups, are Knew Orleans. anyone can go to shopping mall or bar down the street.

After watching this 6 or 8 times I am still amazed at the audio quality. Even with the occasional traffic the sound is perfectly clear and strong. If you didn't know you would think they were playing in a studio......................

First off TS killed it. Their little kick they put on it makes you want to shake a leg for sure. Just a lot more snazzy than Clarence Williams version. Second. It still sucks that the city hasn't returned Royal St. back to limited pedestrian traffic only. Maybe those idiots will wake up one day.
