I highly suggest to chat with natives to reach higher levels of sufficiency quicker. I can say the same about my English as well, I barely learned any at school despite being at a pretty good level I think.

Of course we have different intonations and different phonemes. But both languages have in common with having quite a lot of open syllables in a word and perhaps the usage of glottis or throat too. Even when Japanese people speak English, it sounds choppy(I feel the same way listening to Hungarian which is Finno-Ugric language).
