Heartwarming also to read your very personal thoughts. You seem to me as a quite deep and sincere mind….sharing music through love as well as your love through the music…. As this happens, your soul is kind of set free to connecting with all the other passionate and lovely souls around, actually forming one spiritual unity. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me, if even joe was among us 🫶🌈🌀

Coupled with Shorter's and Zawinul's compositions - so inspiring and uplifting. Every member a master of his instrument(s) - what a privilege to witness. What a piece of joy!! This is such a precious gift to all the listeners and music lovers in 2023!! Thank you for providing this content and quality! I believe, Montreux 1976 must have been some kind of historical…magical setting for live music….time, place, musicians, audience… Two of my definite favourites happened there. This awesome performance by Weather report as well as the second outstanding concert recorded on this festival in 1976: jimmy Cobham together with George Duke, John scofield and alphonso Johnson! Zawinul in the second half, vibing on the grand piano and finishing it on the synths….massive 😌

At around 59:00 they start off the "Birdland" main theme (with some slight differences). That song however didn't come out until almost a year later on "Heavy Weather". I wonder if the song was in the process of being written during this period. Anyway it's always fascinating to hear pieces played partly or entirely a bit "before their time" like that.
@colinthorn
@colinthorn Жыл бұрын
Yes, their music was always a "work in progress", I think ... That's what gives it its uniquely organic flavour. I noticed that Birdland riff too, not in its final form ... I think Zawinul always talked about how his compositions came out of improvisations - imagine just "improvising" that iconic riff!

I grew up listening to the (obviously edited) version of Rumba Mamá that's on the Heavy Weather album. Imagine my surprise when I realised that the original recording had come from this concert. Amazing to see it live - and as an added bonus, to see Jaco at the end of the piece on the side of the stage, really digging the whole performance... Priceless...

Thanks so much for this. Recalls so many great many great memories. Especially Jaco, RIP. I seem to remember seeing the Black Market tour in L.A. in 76/77. Grover Washington Jr. was part of the bill I think. Great Music!

Yes back in the 1980s I was in a few bands and I've always been a fan of jazz music and anyone who could play it my best rock band was a jazz rock fusion band and boy was that a true work of love and as a drummer for me the most memorable and meaningful time in my life playing all over the San Francisco bay area in bar's and forevermore one hell of a learning experience for me I play bass now and learning gtr 6&7string just cuz I was told to try learning guitar so I'm happy to say Wow why not I really like John Mc Laughlin and the the mahavishnu orchestras old LPs and weather report so I'm now taking lessons here in Phoenix AZ we do now finally have some good jazz night clubs down here so I'm happy about that thanks so much for the weather report video I so appreciate and enjoy watching good music on U tube.

good to see ol' fretless Jaco. I saw him at UIUC in 1982 I think it was. Always thought he was a real talent. Shame he lost his life. Great musician. Thanks for posting this.

My 4 year old daughter really digging the chorus in "Badia" makes me one very proud father. Also in regard to "Badia": can't help wondering, whether the utilization of the sound-processed Muezzin's Call is politically correct by todays standards. Musically it is just perfect, though. The way Wayne Shorter plays with it at 1:10:00 is magic.

Thanks for posting! Great to see Pastorius looking so young and fresh, and bless Shorter's heart for hanging in there amidst all the racket. Wish I could find a live performance of their work from Sweetnighter, which for me was the epitome of the WR sound.

Saw this band in 1978 with Erskine on drums. They were so good I went back the next night for the second show. Living in South Florida, I met Jaco several times. He died way to young.
